  • Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor discusses their book, "Race For Profit", at Politics and Prose.
Starting with reforms instituted in the 1970s, Taylor’s groundbreaking study of Black home ownership argues that what looked like inclusion was just another, less explicit, but equally damaging form of systemic racism. Assistant professor of African American studies at Princeton and the author of From BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation, Taylor draws on extensive archival evidence to show that the programs encouraging African Americans to invest in real estate were targeted at those most likely to default on payments and slip into foreclosure. Tracing the devastating effects of this predatory financing, Taylor demonstrates why the private sector alone isn’t the solution to housing inequalities.
