Common misconception, The world used to be 64,000,000 by 64,000,000. At 32,000,000 blocks out, you used to fall through the world. The Minecraft world actually shrunk.
If you're curious you can spam ender pearls to get through bedrock. To get back down you can spam them into the ground in the corner between another block placed on top, From what I remember you actually can place blocks on top of the bedrock (just realized he said "in this version") so yeah in newer versions you can for sure build up there.
I did something similar in a UHC match once, but it was in a version you could grow a dark oak tree and remove the bedrock. Got a few thousand blocks from spawn and grinded in peace until we were teleported to a death match. I also used it in a smp server for a pigman farm in a version you could build up there
Meanwhile Kurt (Far Lands or Bust) has been walking to the far lands for 13 years (started in 2011) and has recently reached about 9.8 million blocks, so he will probably take another 4 to 5 years or so to get there.
Just saw his f3 update! Regardless of the glitchless Farlands runs, or glitched runs like this one, him reaching the Farlands will be a historic achievement.

You don't need to use a furnace for that, you can do it with just the inventory. I used to do it accidentally all the time and it drove me crazy.
