I think it's important for people to realize that people of African descent are among those most affected by racism. Just because the practice of slavery was ended, didn't mean that the injustice towards them stopped. They still struggle to gain back their land, and I think that is very sad.
Some people don't understand that wars and slavery predate the last mentioned facts. Black people enslaved white people long before this mentioned event. Land has always been won and lost countless times, in Africa, Asia, Europe and all over the world. For these people, I suggest better studying the history of the world in which they live.

I think here in the US we focus on slavery that occurred in the United States only. Yet slavery was a universal crime that affected many future generations. As we see here people who are descendants are barely able to get their ancestor's land back.

It is interesting how most of the slaves were shipped to Brazil during this time period and about 4 million Africans were kidnapped and sold into slavery. Overall, I enjoyed watching this video and learning more about Brazil, it's past history, and how it has affected today's society.
They were not kidnapped they were sold by African merchants to Europeans. Normally African Muslims lived off the trade, buying captured Africans made slaves by other tribes during their own internal wars.
It’s a shame to see that the Afro-Brazilian culture and people are still having to deal with the discrimination and disrespect from those also living in Brazil. It’s revealing to know that after many years of suffering and having to accept that they are not as accepted as others in their country, they are able to keep their own lands and continue on with their way of living.

After watching the video, something that I found to be interesting was the fact that Brazil was the last country to abolish slavery as I would have never guessed that this was the case. With that being said, it is evident that there is still some unfair treatment in the descendants of Africans living in Brazil to this day and it is very unfortunate to see.

There is no country in the world that did not have slavery at one time or another. Even in the Americans the so called native Americans had slaves long before the Europeans arrived. In fact slavery still exist mostly in Asia and Africa. Human nature is human nature.
But this slavery was different. In ancient times someone who was enslaved was a prisoner of war or a criminal but when people from the Americas come to enslave Africans either the African kings made trades with the people from americas or some were just taken along the way.

We cannot forget that the idea of slavery predates this event. In the 7th century, the Moors from North Africa invaded the Iberian peninsula, enslaving millions of Europeans. Therefore, we cannot blame the Europeans for "inventing" slavery, nor should we consider any narrative of "historical reparation" as some groups try to do in some countries (as Brazil) generating privileges for these people, just for be black.

When I think of slavery I usually think as an unfortunate set of events that happened years ago. Learning that Brazil was one of the last nations to abolish slavery was very surprising. Several laws were attempted or even were enacted in years that were a lot more recent than others. Different presidents attempted to help abolish discrimination in 2003 and 2015 but it was not completely abolished. I am not sure if it was the government or system they had in place but it really makes me wonder why its taken so long for slaver and discrimination to slowly be abolished.

Knowing that they have made a home where all of them have run to because they have to run from something that humanity at one point said it was okay to do says a lot about how we have and haven't changed. I also can't imagine having to fight for a place I've called home for generations.
There is no country in the world that did not have slavery at one time or another. Even in the Americans the so called native Americans had slaves long before the Europeans arrived. In fact slavery still exist mostly in Asia and Africa. Human nature is human nature.
But this slavery was different. In ancient times someone who was enslaved was a prisoner of war or a criminal but when people from the Americas come to enslave Africans either the African kings made trades with the people from americas or some were just taken along the way.

I'm brazilian, and I realize that half of what is being exposed here is narrative and is politically engaged, created by political parties to manipulate people who are favored with privileges based on the invention of new laws.

It goes without question that the culture of African descendant Brazilian is still close, as brazil had the most recent end to slavery. But it is interesting to see how these people have to continue to fight for what they have lived with their whole life. It is significant to see that these individuals stand up to the right of their home.

I feel like slavery is such a big topic that has been treated as an awkward conversation. US slavery is also not the only one around at the time. I find it very unfair how they have to fight for a home that was already theirs from early time.

I think people often forget that people from Africa suffer the most when it comes to racism. Along with other issues as well but specifically we assume because they ended slaverly the racism was gone but wrong the injustice between them was still there even after they "ended". We do not know so much about what goes on outside of U.S because we are witnessing what occurs here but not somewhere else.

If I am to understand this video correctly, which I'm not sure I am, the Brazilian population has a lot of people of african descent? What percentage are we talking here? and how did they get to Brazil? Were they all brought as slaves by the Portuguese?
I spoke of this in previous lectures and in this week's written lecture. Portugal was the number one world buyer and exporter of African slaves. Millions of Africans crossed the Atlantic Ocean on Portuguese ships to end up working on Brazilian plantations as slaves.
Yes, we have a lot of African descendants, but they're mostly mixed race, having also European blood.

We cannot forget that the idea of slavery predates this event. In the 7th century, the Moors from North Africa invaded the Iberian peninsula, enslaving millions of Europeans. Therefore, we cannot blame the Europeans for "inventing" slavery, nor should we consider any narrative of "historical reparation" as some groups try to do in some countries (as Brazil) generating privileges for these people, just for be black.
The most interesting thing was learning about the different affects that slavery had on the economy of Brazil. Their are programs that help with slaves a. Slavery is a topic that everyone learns about but the fact that the struggle for these people is still not over is interesting. Its interesting to know that Brazil was last to abolish slavery in 1888. In addition its crazy to hear that they had a law that gave land back to them but even years later with the new law nothing happened until president lula created a new law. After watching this video it can be seen that Brazil was the last to aboilish slavery and slavery inequality.

When I think of slavery I usually think as an unfortunate set of events that happened years ago. Learning that Brazil was one of the last nations to abolish slavery was very surprising. Several laws were attempted or even were enacted in years that were a lot more recent than others. Different presidents attempted to help abolish discrimination in 2003 and 2015 but it was not completely abolished. I am not sure if it was the government or system they had in place but it really makes me wonder why its taken so long for slaver and discrimination to slowly be abolished.
Discrimination is already a crime in Brazil.

Brazilian tribes enslaved each other before the Europeans even arrived. Brazil gained independence from Portugal in 1822. However, it took 66 years before Brazil abolished slavery in 1888. You can't blame that on the Portuguese.
