Ben Folds is a musical savant. His critiques helped Pentatonix a lot as they were beginning. They were so fortunate to get input from someone with such astounding musical skill.

I watched all but 1 episode of that SingOff season. It was at this point that 1) I became a Pentaholic and 2) All the other groups started competing for #2. You can see it in the reaction of the other groups at 7:34.

I don’t even like this song but this arrangement & their performance was FIRE.
One of the things I love about watching these is the whole group getting excited for Mitch as the series goes on. Didn’t know at the time how much anxiety he was dealing with and how hard this was for him. Love these kids so much.

All three of the judges are professional musicians; their music critiques were spot-on. They knew what they were talking about.

Ben Folds is legendary. Crazy talented from a very young age and with a wicked sense of humor.
Never performed the same way twice, "Rock This Bitch" is a song Ben Folds improvises at concerts at the urging of fans who yell out those magic words. It all started on March 2, 2002, when he played a solo show at the Vic Theatre in Chicago that was recorded for his Ben Folds Live album. Between songs, a guy in the front row yelled out, "Rock This Bitch!" Ben, taking him literally, made up a song about rocking this bitch off the top of his head to please the fan. The song made the album and started a tradition where fans would yell the phrase and Folds would improvise an original song. He's even done it when backed by an orchestra - in 2019 he spent 15 minutes working out an original song on stage with the North Carolina Symphony at a show in Cary, North Carolina.

Ben Folds, despite being a fantastic musician also is a college professor. That is why his critiques are more technical and he he gives constructive criticism.

I love watching videos of Ben doing what he's famous for. Creating music from scratch on-stage with orchestras. Here's an example of that. The man is brilliant. ruclips.net/video/xMs3XoRM1LM/видео.html

I like art, prog, neo-prog, but when I heard *Diana* *Ankudinova* , I could not resist the voice and talent of this unique singer. She made me listen to pop music in her performance, which was previously out of my interests! I recommend that you draw your attention to *Diana* - she is able to surprise anyone!

At this point, none of them had ever really rapped before and they didn't think they could do it. As it turned out, Urban Method was the only group in the competition that really successfully pulled off rapping. Pentatonix would later discover that they had a talent for rap, especially Mitch, Scott & Kirstie (Kevin would join in later in their video for Sing...Avi never really did). Beginning with the previous performance in Video Killed The Radio Star, PTX got to the point where every performance just got better and better...and the other acts got more and more worried! And at this point, they STILL hadn't really unleashed the Mitch beast yet, but it would happen later. BTW, it was Shawn (not Ben) who gave Avi & Kevin the Meat & Potatoes name, and he did it several times, finally "officially" naming them that on the third or fourth time. Shawn literally was the first Pentaholic!

So happy to see another PTX Sing-Off reaction. Sitting home and feeling punk from my COVID vaccine, and this put a big smile on my face. Thanks for the lift! And I hope all is well with you after the interruption... whatever happened left you shirtless, which I figure is either a great or not-so-great sign! ;-)

The show's producers had a lot to do with how we perceive PTX and their roles as far as the show goes. They pushed for a more clear lead when they would have rather still just shared the leads. You can see it with a lot of the other groups. They all seem to fall back on a specific handful of lead singers when that isn't always how they'd usually do things.

#7 - Rock week spotlights Meat and Potatoes even more than here; #10 - Soul Week belongs to Scott; #12 - Judge's Pick goes to Mitch. The background solo you were hearing in this was Mitch's minor key violin.

I remember being blown away by this one when I was watching live, especially Avi's bass. I think the meat and potatoes comment is coming up on #7 which is tied with #12 for my favorite of the series. I can't wait to see your reaction.

Haha "Can you hear Avi"...um yes and we can also FEEL Avi" lol his bass curls my toes...lol I acknowledge that Scott is brilliant however Kirsty is often left out of the praise...and Ben hearing the descending cords etc but none of the judges ever heard or acknowledged Avi's Overtones which he did in more than half of the performances.....they often congratulated Kevin on the special sound effects lol. Loving your reactions.

That's the thing with Avi's voice, tho (and the thing that hooked me up from the first time I heard PTX). I *feel* it in my chest even when I'm listening with headphones. Hasn't happened with any other singer for me.

@@angie44551 Me too. And I still do, with Avi's solo work. He doesn't always sing in his bass range, but he doesn't have to. I still *feel* his voice.

Ben Folds does know a lot about music and spent his childhood pretty much obsessed with it. He was one of those kids who developed an interest and showed an amazing talent for music as a toddler, tapping out tunes on toy instruments and that sort of thing. Luckily had parents who, though far from wealthy, did all they could to get him instruments and teachers. His family sided with him learning music though. He is an AMAZING piano player. He had a group, Ben Folds Five, in the 1990s, here'a a clip from the Jools Holland show in the UK from 1995. ruclips.net/video/X3kI4MYfCLI/видео.html.
Nowadays he performs with symphonies, comping a piece during the concert based on a key and a mood and an interesting sentence suggested by audience members. ruclips.net/video/BytUY_AwTUs/видео.html

They were young and hadn't yet stretched their rap skills. Plus, they wanted to do something different. Not doing a rap stood out more than doing one and posssibly bungling it.

The Kanye version is just stupid. No way I'd ever listen to that more than the once I did for comparison. The PTX version, though is pretty tough. Scott learned he could do a real good growl doing this song. Avi can do a pretty good mean face for a guy who's so sweet and peaceful.

Dude! What was that interruption? you lost your shirt! LOL Yeah this was a kick ass version by PTX.. AMAZING!
Yes Ben Folds has a group; "Ben Folds Five" which is a trio, have had at least one song " Brick" which I believe may been their biggest hit. Ben has a real good ear for musical arrangements. He is a solid guy for that kind of thing,
Even him and Sara Barreilles have done a song together that shows just how great of a singer Sara is:

Great reaction, enjoyed it! Love Lockdown is one of my favorites from their Sing-Off journey.
By the way, PTX recorded a studio version of this song: ruclips.net/video/iV9NM_xD3O0/видео.html It of course lacks the raw energy of the live performance, but the sound is clearer.
