What's your favorite single location in the Resident Evil franchise?
The RPD for me, if not Racoon City as a whole.
The underground lab in RE2 is pretty atmospheric, but I think the Spencer mansion will always take the cake for me.
The most nostalgic for me is the whole R.P.D. I explored it for countless hours when i was a kid.

*I always thought* if Resident Evil was to made into a television show or movie - they should just adapt the Spencer mansion and Trevor Family story. George Trevor, convinces his family to move to a new location, he’s weirdly asked to include a bunch of puzzles and riddles to the architecture plans, he’s imprisoned in his own creation while his wife and daughter are experimented on, his wife dies and daughter becomes a monster. The final shot of the film / series is of George Trevor lighting his match and seeing his own grave in the bowels of the house - as he realises that Spencer has won.
That would be a really intense, dark show, but I think it could work really well.
I would maybe play up George Trevor as being a renowned eccentric architect who incorporates strange puzzles and riddles in his designs and this is what makes him a target to Spencer: Spencer is obsessed with outstanding people and eugenics, which is why he started Project W and is trying to attain godhood. On Trevor's part he welcomes the challenge of designing the mansion as a way to satisfy his own ego. Despite all the red flags in Spencer's requests, he never stops to question the ethics of things like a room designed to drop the ceiling if the shotgun mounted over the fireplace is removed, and his obsession with creating the outstanding leads to his family's demise.
I'd make him kind of an absent father and husband type of character and lean into Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining for the family dynamic between George, Jessica and Lisa. I'd also maybe give Lisa the final sequence instead of George. While it's effective for him to realize that he's lost, it's Lisa that has to live through hell for the next three decades.
That's what the fans have been calling for, or at the very least, base it on RE1. But Hollywood never wants to do that...

The spencer mansion is one of my favorite areas in video games…not only from a design perspective, but from an atmosphere and lore perspective too.

It such a shame that the movies and Netflix series kept screwing up Resident Evil. If another Resident Evil live action adaptation happens, Matt Draper needs to be a consultant for the thing.

When I was younger I always thought George Trevor was such a tragic figure. But the older I get the more I realize that he was a bit of an idiot. Getting trapped and lost inside a house that he designed and constructed himself, including the traps and puzzles, on there weren't even zombies and monsters when he got trapped. When it only took Chris and the others 7 hours of gameplay to rescue Rebecca, Figure out who the traitor was, call for help, kill the tyrant, escape via helicopter and blow up the mansion.
My day just got a whole lot better.

What's interesting about the whole aspect of zombies in the RE universe is that even if they aren't familiar with the concept of zombies they all easily acclimate to the fact that there are zombies.
One observation, in the original RE2 and RE3 they do mention a lot the word "zombie" from Robert Kendo to Nikolai
I appreciate your appreciation of RE Matt, im going back to the series after some time and confronting my relationship with time in the process. I first got into RE shortly after the release of RE3 remake, and have played and completed a lot of the games since. Im getting heavily back into it now with my ability to now actually play 3make (i lacked the means to do so back then) as well as the remakes of 1 (which ive already beaten a bunch) 2 and 4 (and the originals of 1 2 and 3), and it has me thinking back at how quickly time can pass and how long it's actually been. I've come to a sweet conclusion with it, that I can actually say that this series has been a part of my life. I guess it all sounds kinda silly when 3make came out in 2020, and it's only the end of 2023. Time can feel so long yet so short like that
The heart of Resident Evil has always been how the dark aspirations of corporate entities impact the lives of everyday people. Lisa Trevor is the perfect example. More recently, the Baker family is a wonderful example as well. Innocent folks twisted by the greed and overreach of corporations.

The RE series has never been for me, I just know things through cultural osmosis and having friends that love it, your videos are probably my definitive touchstone. But hearing about the anachronistic gothic mansion on top of a high tech biolab, my first thought is Cabin in the Woods and it surprises me if that angle isnt more leveraged in the movie adaptions

Great video! For Lisa Trevor, I have a theory (which may or may not have been intended by the developers), that Lisa Trevor is "patient zero" for the G virus. She's effectively immortal because of her regeneration, and growths come out of her head not dissimilar to William Birkin's growths as he transformers in Resident Evil 2. I'm sure Lisa was experimented on with the Progenitor and T-virus. While it killed her mother, the virus did NOT turn Lisa into a zombie, but rather mutated her into something different. Playing Resident Evil Zero, we know William Birkin and Albert Wesker were both keeping an eye on the Spencer estate and how the Progenitor virus experiments were coming along. Lisa's case could have piqued Birkin's interest enough to take samples of her mutation and cultivate the G virus himself.
Not sure if that's canon lore, or me making connections where there are none, of if that's the unspoken origin of the G virus, but that's my personal theory.
Not to shit on you, but it acyually is a known fact Lisa's mutation was the basis for the G-Virus, and in fact part of her mutation also made her highly compatible with the Nemisis parasite.

Was killing the architect of the mansion apart of Spencer’s plan? Whoever was to build the place had to have had every detail of the place mapped out and of course George was ultimately hired for the job
But did George know about the lab underneath or what they were working on tho? All he knew was the puzzles he designed and all the special doors and all that

The biggest issue with the story of RE is if you look even a little closer it’s just ridiculous. I have always loved the camp feeling of it all with its bad acting and dialogue and ridiculous plot twists. No matter what they do to remake the old, it will seemingly always fall short of the original. I haven’t played 4 yet, but it seems to be better than 2 and 3. I will always have those games either way.

I personally highly dislike the remake continuity with Lisa Trevor.
Lisa was an unnecessary addition to the franchise.
As far as I am concerned the OG games are canon, and the remakes are an alternate universe.
I feel like RE5 and RE0 (and a little bit the RE1 remake) kinda convoluted and ruined a rather good and simple story. In the original RE1, it's just an evil and reckless pharmaceutical company that screwed up in a major way. RE remake kinda adds to the characters that created the mansion, ok. But RE5 and RE0 just added too much bullshit.
