I totally agree with you, Joel. Alcoholism is an illness and you don’t cure an illness by hiking up prices. You cure an illness by fixing its cause. We need to target the issues of social care, poverty and unemployment levels. As you say, targeting pricing alone will just least people to find another way to get their alcohol.

I agree for people who are addicted to alcohol. Where this might work is for 16 year old kids who would buy cheap ciders and drink to excess. The higher price might put that kind of "purchaser" off, but not people who have an addiction to alcohol. We shall see.......

People tend to think this is intended to be a quick fix. Yes, it may not help people who are already alcoholics, but it makes it more difficult for young people to purchase cheap alcohol and develop a problem. It's a long-term policy.

I like that one. I used to talk about it in criticism of mental health services. Getting drunk when you've got personal stuff to unravel and identify and deal with is like dressing a festering wound with a magic numbing plaster that hides the gunk - less pain as a result, but the risk is people just see the drunk.

I was staying in a hotel some years ago and got chatting to a couple of Norwegian businessmen in the bar. They told me that their government had made alcohol so expensive that just about everyone had a still at home to make their own. The same thing will happen here if alcohol prices keep going up. Stills are openly on sale in the UK as they are legal to sell, buy or own, you're just not supposed to use them to make alcohol. A similar thing has already happened with tobacco products. The taxes are so high now, most of my friends who smoke buy illegally smuggled tobacco instead, which is freely available. It makles me laugh when the government boasts about how few people smoke now when they can't possibly know how many that is when they have no way of recording consumption.

completely agree with raising the unit price for Booze - but it needs to be combined with education - A million years ago in the UK drink driving was an issue but due to serious action by governments - bigger fines & a campaign of education (partly via TV ads) boozed up behind the wheel is significantly reduced these days & socially unacceptable thing to do - this needs to be repeated re excessive alcohol intake

Hi Joel im a recovering alcoholic of 5 yrs now and its most definately an illness not something we choose . It can happen to anyone mine started aged 20 yrs i suffered with severe social anxiety and would drink to cope it then became something i needed everyday , its absolute hell and extremely differcult to come off , its a physical addiction as well as mental . My brain had to rewire essentially . Im now free of addiction and feel great . Why do people always say why are you not drinking ? i think it should be why are you drinking . 😊

    • @davidmoore4615
      @davidmoore4615 4 месяца назад +1

I think you should call yourself recovered if you've beaten the addiction :)
A lot of what you say resonates. People don't get the physical aspect. I still have the letter from Nov 2022 confirming on paper what was said by voice, which was basically "if you don't go to hospital today, you will die, and it is important you continue drinking alcohol as normal until you get there, else it is likely you will die".
People who query you in certain situations are, in my perhaps lucky (?) experience, a rarity but they're probably asking themselves questions. Quite possibly asking "why are any of us drinking, really?"
Recovered or recovering people get unwarranted stigma so even if you straight up say "I'm an alcoholic" then that's an immediate shut down I have found 😊

I don't live in Scotland but I already make my own wine because it's a lot cheaper to make that, than buying cider (which is the cheapest booze possible in off-licenses).
The wine I make is 15% ABV so it's also twice as strong as these ciders!
I have got it down to about £1 for a 750ml bottle of wine. That's 5 times cheaper than what wine costs to buy. I suggest this is what people in Scotland do, just make it yourself from a 30 bottle kit. I always use the "SG Gold Chardonnay Style" and ferment it in 5L Spring Water bottles. Been doing it for well over a year now and every batch has turned out fine. Ferment for 2 weeks with about 1100g sugar per 5L bottle and in 2 weeks you have wine at 15% ABV. It costs hardly anything, 25L of wine for about £35. In terms of 1 pint of beer at 5%, 200ml of this wine at 15% ABV (which is about the same alcohol as 568ml of beer at 5% ABV) comes out at 30 pence! Not bad when pubs charge over £4 a pint these days! I don't even have to go to the off-license, it's all here at home. If I have 5 little 200ml glasses of this wine I don't need any more than that and it's only cost £1.50.
You can make it from pure orange juice too but it isn't cheaper than the wine kit (it costs about the same) and the wine from orange tastes like garbage compared to these kits. The kit is about £28 delivered and the sugar is about £6.

Hi, retired GP here, with special interest in alcoholism and addictions. Minimum unit price will (as you say) probably not help the already addicted - and may even harm a few, and their families too. *But the greatest amount of alcohol related harm happens not to alcoholics but to people who drink a lot but who aren't addicted*. WHAT??? Because there are many many more of the harmful non addicted drinkers than there are alcoholics. National alcohol and tobacco consumption closely follows taxation levels. with consumption going down with higher taxes and rising with lower ones. And total alcohol and tobacco related harm closely follows consumption. Minimum unit pricing is a whole country policy. Individual heavy drinkers, smokers and drug addicts need a whole load of other more complex and much more personalised approaches.

Hello Joel, speaking as one who is both native to Scotland and also residing here, I can certainly confirm that our nation's relationship to alcohol is very deep-seated and cultural and like you, I have very mixed feelings about the benefits of minimum unit pricing... Although there is an emotional part of me that might say that if it suceeds in bringing anyone back from the brink or better still helps prevent them from going in that direction in first place, then by all means bring it on; I feel I have to say, this is hurting far more people than just the ones that it's targetted at and therefore, it can only be a tax...! Because an addict will do pretty much anything they need to, in order to get their fix. They'll not eat because, thanks to the ridiculous benefits system that our government brought into being and still perpetuates, we now have an entire network of food banks that they'll rely upon instead until the day comes when they need to sell it in a pub for a tenner... And then, their families won't eat either. The communities in which they're obliged to live, will be filled with others with the very same problems. Some of them may have other addictions too - gambling, sex, or crime - which results in them spending time in prison - where they can relax with many others like them - free from any of life's pressures or responsibilities - because our extremely overcrowded prison system makes very little attempt to rehabillitate anybody and yet, still offers them free accommodation, food and all the home comforts they desire - as well as their fixes... But wait - there are wealthier families too, whose lives are ruined by the relentless intake of vodka, gin, wine and fancy cocktails. Shots, fortified wines - and what hope is there for the children of these adults who insist they're not alcoholics, yet devour several bottles a week...? You only need to go into any supermarket or convenience store and observe how much shelf space is given over to alcoholic drinks, to see the extent of the problem; or watch the contents of their trollies as they leave the store for their cars: it is absolutely endemic right across every social definition that ever was!! There are however a few families who frown upon such behaviours and only with considerable reluctance, accept an alcoholic drink on formal occasions and almost never, otherwise. Indeed, I am one of those fortunate few, because both of my parents grew up in abject poverty that was considerably worsened by parents who put their social lives before food and clothing, for their children. It was only when they got together that either of them realised how much better life could be - and they vowed there and then to ensure their children never went without. Yet, we do seem to still be in the minority that is less than a fifth of all the other people we know.

i wouldn’t even say that nowadays it’s the alcohol prices that are putting younger people off going out and drinking, it’s the fact that we barely have money for food a week on top of sky high rent, bills, etc, on top of being students therefore even if they wanted the cheapest alcohol they couldn’t afford it, plus a lot of people are sick of clubs and especially for women, the chance of being spiked while out is so high now so most people just don’t bother

I believe I can agree with you, Joel...
I'm not a drinker as such, just a couple of glasses of wine, or one Guinness on my birthday, and / or at Christmas, and / or on New Year's Eve. But not all usually one or the other...and rarely as a regular habit.
I think those who have developed a dependency upon alcohol, they'll be less likely to just stop drinking, as whatever started them drinking heavily in the first place, the stresses caused by poor wages or no wages, poor housing, rising costs of living generally etc. As you suggested, the addicts may move on from alcohol to other substances...and the additional crimes which occur in order to afford the other types of addiction. I really can't speak on behalf of drinkers as I don't imbibe to such a degree that I can understand their woes and worries. I feel for them, and their communities but I think there has to be a better way. Like you, I feel it 'smacks of Prohibition', and that just caused the problem drinking to go underground...to 'Private drinking clubs' and "speak-easy's" which only added to the problem.
Yes, the alcoholics need help, but not being driven into ways and means to procure alcohol and / or additional substances, which builds into an even greater threat to society as a whole, and to the services they're trying to protect, specifically, with these 'Draconian measures' ...in my opinion. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😥
Good Luck Scotland...and Good Luck to those who want to try to help people

If you live down anywhere near the border you can just nip across and still take advantage of normal pricing and cart it home for friends and family. Elsewhere, you're just poorer and more irritated by the greater expense (thereby having more reason to drink). The cost is likely detering some young people from really getting into it, but for those with ingrained habits its just another burden inflicted by wealthy (and heavily subsidised) politicians in Holyrood at a time when people are at their poorest and unhappiest.

The thing with Alcoholism is these minimum prices wont stop alcoholics from getting alcohol, it just means they'll go without necessities in order to favor alcohol or perhaps even steal or pawn to feed their habit. If they're putting this money into alcohol recovery programs then fair play but I just don't see it.
What I think a lot of politicians don't realise is fundamentally addiction is rooted in pain/trauma...Just as tobacco got more expensive, many switched on to vaping. Make alcohol too expensive and people could quite easily switch to man-made dangerous drugs for that "buzz" i.e street valium And as for people saving money, no alcoholic I know SAVES MONEY! Because they spend it all or majority on alcohol. I don't even think this is aimed at alcoholics as Alcoholism is just as much a mental issue as it is a physical issue. It's far more deep rooted than just raising the price of alcohol.

This will simply raise crime levels. Alcoholics are addicts and will do whatever it takes to get their drinks. Only someone who doesn't understand that is going to believe that this will work. There are alcoholics in every country where you can purchase alcohol. I suspect there will always be alcoholics. I believe there are people who have a natural tendency towards addiction. Better alcohol than heroin in my opinion.

Now it’s, How much can we get from them”? “What can we spend it on”?

If we all had more of OUR OWN money left in our pockets at the end of each month a few pence hear and there wouldn’t effect where we spend it.
I’m saying the governments are trying deliberately to keep us poor to control our behaviour.

But deaths from alcohol have gone up since the law came in to the highest in 15 years. Also its not true that the poorest people have the worst drinking problems, in fact in Scotland it's the opposite. Dangerous levels of drinking were highest among the wealthiest 20% in a 2022 survey. The most likely to not drink at all were the most deprived 20%. The Scottish Government are just engaging in gestures, not genuine solutions.
