A respiratory therapist friend says the reason to keep moisture in the air come fall and winter is because it makes breathing easier so I would think during a fire it would weigh down the particles in the air so one isn't breathing them. Our AC units have HEPA filters. Living in a wild fire areas we also have extra filters for our car. Its surprising how filthy they get like now where we have had fog smoke for TWO weeks. Also stay hydrated during wild fires because that helps keep the lungs healthier too!

Love your vids. We picked up a 20 x 20 furnace filter at Bi-Mart. and taped it to our box fan, on low setting. After 4 days it is turning black. We taped another smaller filter to the back of our portable (on rollers) air conditioner and now that it has cooled off, it is on fan-only setting. We are closed in except for outdoor duties. My wife has a bona fide air filter in the bedroom, and that is a good investment for any time. My only concern is the higher amount of CO2 inside a closed-up house, but in my judgment it is better than the high levels of particulates in Salem's atmosphere. I will be replacing the air filter on our Buick.

We had a wildfire come up to the property line last July. 60 mph winds. The flames moved FAST. Hot and fast. Burned up the entire field behind our house, melted the vinyl siding off our shed, and caused an incredible amount of smoke damage inside. The fire alarms were going insane for awhile. Our Nest cameras picked it up. When the smoke damage is that extreme, you need to have the home professionally cleaned and sanitized. We spent 17 days in a hotel while insurance cleaned the house and replaced damaged stuff. Also had all textiles removed and cleaned. We have heat damage to our windows and roof that were exposed to the intense heat. Still working with insurance to cover them, which they will. It’s scary stuff. Kudos to the fire fighters. They were at the right place at the right time to save our home.

I highly recomend people to put bowls of water around your house, and with a fan it will catch contaminants.

Yeah, I bought HEPA filters up here in BC Canada for the furnace we had for a few years, and my parents had a HEPA filter yet, it did not stop my mother from having 4 brain tumors and lung cancer, or from my dad receiving bowel cancer years later, they had chosen to healthy solutions as much as they could that was told to them at the time. A pot of cinnamon power in a pot of water helps but best to use wet towels at your doors, and wash HEPA filters every day when the smoke is really bad outside with a hose so the pollution doesn't clog up your sink. Good luck guys!

I worked with all kinds of filters at my job before retirement. As filters are being used they become better filters. As the filter accumulates debris (dust, ash or other similar things) the size of the filter material lessens and less air gets through. This will continue until the filter is totally blocked and NOT allowing any air to get through. Keep replacement filters on hand or clean the filters as a last resort. Also if weather permits (warm temps) seal your fireplace opening.

One thing I and any HVAC technician will advise is that residential HVAC systems are not powerful enough to operate with MERV 13 or higher rated filters. Doing so may cause added strain on the blower motor for the HVAC fan. MERV 12 is highest recommended filter you can go on a residential central air system. You are free to do as you wish, just know the risk to your equipment. Best to get a stand alone air purifier/HEPA filter like Cody has to scrub the air.

Sears is gone now, but look into Austin Air. They make really good filters. They are expensive, but they are worth it since the filters last five years.
A lot of newer vacuums with HEPA filters really don't do anything. The HEPA filters push away from the frame when you turn them on and the air goes around them. Some brands are especially bad for their motors running a little hot and deforming the plastic around the motors, which then allows the exhaust to bypass the filter altogether. You can tell this, because the outside of the vacuum gets filthy where it is leaking. The best defense is a vacuum that uses a HEPA bag.

Take an old vacuum cleaner where you can also connect the hose at the back. Connect the hose at the back hang this hose with a large arc +/- 10 "A 15" at the top in a container with water and cover this container with a towel against splashes and start the vacuum cleaner. This now blows air into the container with water, the water now absorbs the dust and stench from the air. The smaller the air bubbles the better it works, cork or plug in the graft of the hose and 100 or 200 small holes under water in the hose works best
    Best regards

With super bad smoke in the Okanogan in recent years I built a HEPA Air scrubber out of a high torque greenhouse fan inside a box with the filter on 1 side. And a 8” hose on the intake stretched out to the other side of the house so I know the air circulates. And on days when the smoke is only medium bad, it can easily handle direct fresh air from outside for a few hours at a time to freshen up.

Charcoal air filter. Also, humidify, circulate, and filter. A/C strips moisture, and collects particulates in the process.

Forced air systems I recommend a merv 13, it grabs particles as small as .3 microns where your regular merv 8 grabs 3 microns and larger. They do plug fast so change frequently... merv 8 is a safer bet during ac season if you don’t have smoke to fight with because they won’t plug and freeze up your evaporator coil as easily.

Be wary of carbon dioxide concentrations when you're sealed inside your house. It's not life threatening, but it can cause some cognitive symptoms. Having plants inside is helpful.

It is so smokey here! I'm definitely looking for your clear the air recipe! We did evacuate but came back after a couple of days and it's horrible outside air quality wise! Our house is pretty well sealed, however we can still smell slight amounts.

Thank you for all you have done to help our families friends and lived ones in Oregon. Thank you for the educational information. Thank you for calling on men to participate in preparation as men like us need to stop believing the lies or being attacked for being men. GOD bless you and your family 🙏 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Pretty bad right now up here in North Idaho. It's hot so you need AC but we have mobile units which create vacuum and pull a bit of smoke so we run a honeywell hepa smoke filter meant for cigar rooms and it does okay. Need a few more I think. We are better off than most though I guess. My grandparents lost there homes in Gates and Mill city this week so smoke doesn't seem so bad. Thanks for the info and prayers for all.

I’m in Arizona.. eastern side of the state and the smoke from California is so bad almost 1,000 miles away we can’t even see the blue sky the last few days! More than when we had a fire 80 miles away a couple months ago.

Good advice, also the jerry rigged box fans+hvac filters help a lot. One question: do woodland firefighters wear respirators? It seems like they never even have masks on in photos/news and I hate to think of them breathing the smoke 24/7.

Thanks for the tips. Every now and then, I do indulge in breathing some peppermint/eucalyptus oils to help the sinuses. Doterra makes some good ones.
Do you recommend people get an air quality monitor? Might help people detect the efficacy of their mitigation techniques.

A swamp cooler pulls in outside air, but through wet filters. This humidifies the air and captures dust.

Change your forced air furnace filters if you have central air. We buy cheap filters and change them every 1-2 weeks. It is hot where I live

A+ We have put duct tape over every window seam and one of our two doors. We run our air purifier and a/c units constantly. The filters are dirty and we have no more so hopefully I can find something at the hardware store in the morning and make them fit. Smoke is still getting it and I don't know from where. Our house is a hundred years old so there are likely places we don't see where the smoke enters. Your videos are good viewing. Thank you. I sit here and smell and taste smoke. I want this to end but the fires are so close.

No one enjoys unhealthy air quality on behalf of the Oregon wildfires which are occurring before Fall starts if my memory serves me correctly. My parents and I have air purifiers in our house that was built in the ‘40s back when 2 World Wars occurred in the past before TV was invented. I’m not even revealing my residential address to both of you online, because it’s a violation of privacy.

BTW, baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, which can be bought in bulk to lower the PH in swimming pools, and can be spread out in pans to absorb odors.

Burning beeswax candles let off a (negative?) charged ion that attracts particulates and can help scrub out the air.
