Excellent and very informative! One advice: Please change your camera focus to manual when recording your videos, the auto focus pulling sometimes gets a bit distracting. THX, love your videos too!
I hear ya, but the camera person is constantly following, framing, and zooming. I think if I told her to start manual focusing as well I might end up without a camera person!
Is there any chance you would authorize a carbon framed F1?? Basically replacing the traditional wood with carbon components... Perhaps, with 3D printing there could also be a future market for a "plastic" frames that could be printed and assembled... This is an AMAZING VIDEO SERIES!! LOVE IT, AND THANK YOU FOR SHARING ALL THIS KNOWLEDGE AND EFFORTS!! Chris Young
Hi Chris, I missed this comment. I have a newer, much much better video about the F1 coming out in a few weeks so keep your eyes open for that. As far as carbon goes, this issue is that if I could work in glass, I would do some major reshaping of the kayak because glass can give me shapes I can't get with skin. I have no idea how to do that though. I don't love the idea of carbon in general though. If I side surf an F1 into a rock, it bounces off. If I do the same with a carbon boat, it has a hole in it. What I really really really want is an F1 kayak, reshaped, then made in the Prijon blow molded plastic. It seems like the easy thing to do would be to buy the coaster mold from mariner and start making Carbon Coasters. That would look cool in black.
Another excellent video Brian. QQ where in the plans are the mods you referenced? You also mentioned 6 different cut sheets. Maybe there is a newer version of the plans since I purchased, or more probable I am doing something wrong. Thanks again love these videos.
Just wondering a couple things about making it lighter: 1. Is it possible to make the gunwales narrower? 2. Would it work to make the forward stem narrower? Thanks.
You can shave a bit here and there but it never amounts to more than a pound if you want to keep the same frame longevity. The gunwales can definitely be less tall by about 1/2 inch but that doesn't leave me room for mounting the foot braces or the secondary stringer. All thicknesses can be reduced by 1/16th on the longitudinal wood, but that doesn't take off much either. Big place to get rid of weight is ribs and skin. Do all those things and you can get it down to 26 lbs instead of 30 which is where these boats started 12 years ago, but the current generation frames last 10 years, the old ones only lasted 5. Seems like a good trade to me. The best way to make a skin boat lighter is to make the frame thinner and more complex, like my new canoe designs or a bidarka, but I can't get F1 shaping details out of that type of construction. I miss the old 26 lb F1's to be honest, but I think these are a better return on investment.
man, that half scale model is awesome!
How did you half scale it

As a video producer, amateur but pro trained, I noticed that too.

cheers for the details of the mods. would you omit the first bow rib for the F1 surf...?
Nah, it stays

@@capefalconkayak, Thanks so much, Brian!
Can I get plans for the scale model?
Buy the plans and halve them
Seems like a rediculous idea.Cant wait to release my revolutionary design for my ocean yak ...Patent pending? Going to try!
What is this, a boat for ants!?
:)
