It took him a decade to hit the million dollar mark, dude paid his dues for sure and was far from an overnight success, inspiring as hell, slow success builds character, fast success builds ego
@swampThaang Very well could be! Shame, I often wonder why they didn't make a part 2 because the demon didn't die at the end. I see now because it flopped at the box-office. Definitely got cheated out of a good movie series.
Well, @kelvinwilkes1050, it was viewed as more of an artsy, introspective sports drama than a typical crowd-pleaser. Plus, it had tough competition and limited appeal beyond hardcore basketball fans. It gathered following and became a classic overtime.
One thing to realize with videos like these; They are made entirely with an AI prompt and zero actual research. The "creator" isn't going to fact check any of the information before posting.
Remember also, Denzel was a producer on many of those movies and he most likely got a backend residual - when they were on DVDs and sold to TV networks.
He directed Antwone Fisher and, according to this, got a $10.7M paycheck out of a $12.5M budget. No way he agreed to that huge a percentage of the budget up front and left behind only $2.5M for the rest of the film - he wouldn't sabotage his own movie like that. The bulk of his $10.7M paycheck had to've been on the backend. Bottom line, OP saying that both his frontend pay and backend pay is accounted for here checks out
Flops while Cry Freedom, Glory and Malcolm where very good movies with exceptional performances. He was already a star before getting the commercial hits
A lot of actors take whatever comes along because they got to pay the bills it's not sad in the beginning of their career like what you're talking about with Denzel it's sadder when they've reaching the end of their awesome career and they keep doing it like Nicolas Cage. 😁👌🏽
That's not how artist or intelligent business people operate. Less up front and points in the backend may be more beneficial and allow exploring passion projects.
It’s amazing to see how much of the budget these Large scale actors really get. I work in the film industry and every 2 weeks or see we get a production report which shows all of the upcoming movies/shows that are coming within the next couple of months so the union members can start shopping themselves to work on said shows. I always look at the budget to the film and look up who’s acting in it because that literally decides how many hours we’re likely to work in a week. A show/movies can have a 50m budget but if A Denzel or Samuel L or Deniro or DiCaprio is starting you know they’re going to get nearly 40% of the budget and couple that with the other actors the crew would be left with maybe 25m to disperse over the duration of the show that may be filming anywhere from 1 month or even up to 10 months. I ALWAYS try to work on the mid budget with lesser known actor shows because you will work longer and make more money.
Great insight, @NunYaa504! You must have a pretty entertaining job-thank you for sharing. I’d also add that big names, like the ones you mentioned, usually have backend deals in place, so they aren’t solely paid from the budget.
Didn't realize i hadn't seen so many Denzel movies until Glory, not surprisingly, just around time he started breaking out. And Spike shoulda just gave him that mil 😉
Awesome Videos. What about Leonardo DiCaprio. Also what about possibly putting the rating next to the movie title and year. And a total box office tally? (and Possibly a ROI for the salary).
Great video though, will definitely be giving this a like.. I observed two things: Denzel does well when he has another star actor to compliment him.. or when he has a role that makes him 'wild'.. I wud say he does appeal when he has a 'calm' role. 1.
The actor's/ actress's paycheck's are included in the budget. So is everything and everyone else who worked behind the scenes and are credited in the films. The amount he was paid, vs budget, shows how much they believed he poops golden nuggets.
Eddie Murphy next! Hes made so much from movies. Also u should do music as well. Jay z ,Michael Jackson etc id love to see a calculation of what they may have made from music sales
First Denzel movie i ever saw was The Bone Collector in 1999 & that's around the time he started becoming actually a superstar & i saw every movie hes made since then basically!!!!!! Is he my favorite actor ???? No but hes a amazing actor & probably my third or forth favorite blk actor of all time cuz i got a few others i like better but hes definitely in the top 5
Wow, @lloydg8324! Thank you! It really means a lot to have your support. I'll surely research Mel's paychecks for you, although it will take a while, so stay tuned!
when you become a studio actor that is where the 15meals plus come into play... You start off as an independent actor then, agent/manager, then studio actor then you write your own tickets and movies... I would have to work 10 lives to make that kind of money and I work with radiation in the hospital keeping people alive longer than should... Now I have to learn to continue my career and become a movie star...
@ Thanks for the love. What I enjoy most about your channel is seeing how actors progress through their careers. Getting their 1st million, declines, comebacks, roles they took for less. Great channel!
It took him a decade to hit the million dollar mark, dude paid his dues for sure and was far from an overnight success, inspiring as hell, slow success builds character, fast success builds ego
So well said
Bro that money was alot back then, look at the budget of the movies back in the day.
It also check the box office commission
Yup... 500k pay during 1989 was wild money. He is living a good life for a long time now😂
Pocket watching goofballs!
These are the kind of videos I like. Straight to the point and no over done commentary and BS clickbait. Keep em coming!
I'm glad you enjoy my work, @NoreagaMan! Your support truly keeps me going. 😀
Pocket watching a$$
For real!
He got game is a classic!
FACTS!
I was shocked to see it as a flop. I love that movie
@ That was a heartfelt movie!
Certified hood classic
That’s what I said how was that a flop
He's worth every penny. One of the greats.
People are looking for food in a dumpster and you claim an acting job worth 20-30 million.? you deluded.
@shayq12 welcome to the United States of America 🇺🇲 where you can be whoever you want to be, choice is yours.
Fallen was one of the most slept on movies of all-time!!! Not just a Denzel movie. Didn't know it did that bad at the movies!!!
How good was fallen?
Came here to write that, flawless movie. I would go so far as to say it might be his best.

@@absalom0412 it's VERY good. It's a must watch.
He earned every bit of it. He didn't start at the top, but you see the increase as time progressed.
among the largest paydays I've ever seen. Bravo, Denzel!
Look up how much Johnny Depp and Robert Downey has made, those numbers are crazy lol
Can’t imagine how easy and happy life would be with just 1-2 million. Crazy how much people have.
How in the hell was "He Got Game" a flop???

They are only going off the money profit and loss
Movies can be good movies and flop just like bad movies can make insane profits.
Malcom X was his best performance period.
I would agree with u but him in training day was jus too good
The Hurricane was great too
John Q as well
Macbeth??
Pfft. Nothing beats Alonzo training day, literally nothing. You wanna go to jail or you wanna go home... poot butt ahhs
Denzel is the most handsome and dignified brother in media of all time 💯
I'm not too bad myself. 👋
Fallen and He Got Game are all time classics
Remember also, Denzel was a producer on many of those movies and he most likely got a backend residual - when they were on DVDs and sold to TV networks.
You're absolutely right, @Chicago48! And the figures shown here take that into account too.

Denzel is still my number one actor hands down.
Without a doubt the A plus plus lister. Deserves every dime. Brilliant actor.
$40M for one movie??!?!? He's truly an American Gangster!!! That's some gangsta shyt right there!
We actually went to the midnight show and it sold out. Everybody screamed when they showed Greensboro,NC on the screen!😂😂😂
It's only because it's a Ridley Scott film he got that much for once film
Nc in the building lol
That's why he played that character so well because 40 Mill man.
A lot of his money was made on the back end with DVD sales, etc. i believe $25MM was his base for it.
Wow this was cool.... Cant wait to see more
Glad to hear you enjoy my work, @MrTry2alwaysBpositive! Your comment just made my day! Thanks!
It's amazing that almost all his movies in the 80's were flops and he still became a star
Flops while Cry Freedom, Glory and Malcolm where very good movies with exceptional performances. He was already a star before getting the commercial hits
Harder for black actors to break through
A lot of actors take whatever comes along because they got to pay the bills it's not sad in the beginning of their career like what you're talking about with Denzel it's sadder when they've reaching the end of their awesome career and they keep doing it like Nicolas Cage. 😁👌🏽
@tomvickers2231 who determines if it's a flop?
@@JackN13_ most likely how it performs in theaters, financially, in comparison to the budget.
So since 1980-2024 he avg $16 mill year…really started going crazy after training day. 40 year goat! Crazy. Been a millionaire since late 80s.
Well done Denzel. You deserve your success. Such a great actor.
American gangster is one of my top 5 movies 🥰 literally watch it 1x / quarter lol
Training Days and Equalizer was hes best movie.
and man on fire
All the money aside let’s just take a moment to appreciate the catalog it’s untouchable 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
He's a legend
Really enjoy watching these.
Glad to hear that, @Martin.C.777! Thank you!
Fallen was a bomb, I liked it.
Just because u liked it dosnt mean other people did clown 🤡
Yeah, I thought Fallen was pretty good too. It also said “Glory” was average, I thought it was outstanding.
These are just cold numbers! Earnings don’t always reflect a movie’s quality. Masterpieces can flop, but that doesn’t make them bad films.
I never realized how rich he was 😱
He got taxed half of that money lol but still rich yeah
Shout out to Spike Lee for paying Denzel a good salary fir his movies.
If I’m Denzel I’m not accepting anything under $50 Million for any role ever again!🐐🎯💯
Well it’s a good thing you’re not.
That would be the end of his career.😂
That's not how artist or intelligent business people operate. Less up front and points in the backend may be more beneficial and allow exploring passion projects.
His last movie is coming out soon and he's retiring
From the 2000s, this man had hit after hit
I became a fan when Dezel shed that one tear in Glory.

Antwone Fisher was my movie😢🎬
My favorite movie of his was his highest paycheck! Ma man!
Mississippi Masala was a great movie. Loved it.
As far as box office results, most of his biggest hits were when he had a strong co-star.
Still, he's one of the best actors alive

He was making more in the 90’s than what most actors are paid today.

The bone collector was awesome

Thanks for tuning in, @chrismyers2170! Actually, Denzel had backend deals in most cases, which meant he received a share of the profits.
Can’t wait to see him in the Gladiator. Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz & Eddie Murphy.
I’m surprised with the Fallen rating, good film that was!
Denzel has done well sheesh blessings
Denzel was killingh them almost half of every movies budget he got 35/40 percent
Good observation, @big-l5771, but keep in mind that he had some backend deals as well-the figures reflect that.
My favourite actor
Eddie Murphy next! Hes made so much from movies. Also u should do music as well. Jay z ,Michael Jackson etc id love to see a calculation of what they may have made from music sales
Murphy is on the list, waiting for his turn, @dpowell468 😉 I don't plan to cover the music world for now, but I'll consider.
training day and out of time was pretty goddamn good movies 👍😁
It crazy how he is 25 to 95 percent of the budget in some of these movies.
Great observation, @itsjustme11! But keep in mind those paychecks are inflated by backend earnings from the profits.
He about to play in Black Panther
Imagine making 650 Million Dollars as an actor in like 25 years thats just Crazy to me.. dude Must be a billionaire for sure if he made it right

Fences was my favorite
Training Day was a Mega Hit
Shoe program ni***a 23 hour lockdown.
Training Day will never get old ,The same as Remember the Titans.
An actors actor that was grossly underpaid and never complained just kept owning his craft. A lot of his countersparts could learn a thing or two.
HE GOT GAME WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME 💅
Dang! In "Remember the Titans" he was the film and the budget. 😂

Denzel got more hits than a boxer😮
Need that gladiator 2 update when it comes out lol
After 1991 he can’t miss the all great movies

$3 Million dollars WELL SPENT on Malcolm X...
Tom Cruise paychecks gotta be big considering he took a percentage not just a paycheck

Mel Gibson next please. I love your RUclips channel. It’s really fantastic very informative and entertaining.
Wow, @lloydg8324! Thank you! It really means a lot to have your support. I'll surely research Mel's paychecks for you, although it will take a while, so stay tuned!
Lets just say, he has made alot of money
A few 100k over that much time until he made millions is pretty good. Especially considering that amount of money went way farther back then.
With these numbers I feel like he was still played 😊
Makes me wonder what are the movies that made the "ALL TIME TITAN" list. I can only think of one for sure, Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Thank you for bringing this up, @azrielnguyen9586! In my definition, an "All Time Titan" is among the Top 50 highest grossing movies of the decade.
He got game - great great movie!!
Yes, it was a great movie. But they probably considered it a flop cause spike lee was too pro-black for white people to mess wit him
You need to watch it again,.
It's not that good at all~
One really good scene when he smacks the guy,.Thats IT~
