  • Today we talk about pond rebuilds, liner vs. concrete ponds and my favorite koi from our experiences in the field for the last two decades. Hear or thoughts on how long a pond should last before you rebuild, our point of view on concrete and liner ponds, and find out what my favorite koi fish is. You keep asking Pond Questions, and I'll keep answering them, maybe even on the show.

I don't think I could choose my favourite. Every time you see another great fish that becomes your favourite. I do like the Hariwake, I think they are under appreciated. Also Asagi are pretty special.

I have heard a suggestion to put concrete bags behind the liner, poke holes in the bags and spray them with water before putting down the liner. I was wondering if you have heard of this suggestion before or what you think of it. The liner would still be what you see at the bottom of the pond under the gravel and rocks. The company suggesting it was trying to mitigate pond leaks in the liner.

Not sure gow you get those extreme figues for a concrete pond. Must be fairly karge ones. Most have a small to medium size. They can be done for far less doing your own concrete pond.

I'm building a 50 ft x 50 ft x 5ft deep pond. I'm considering putting concrete on the bottom 2 ft and then covering it with about 6 in of dirt. This is to prevent crawfish and whatever else likes to dig from putting enough holes in the bottom to cause a water leak problem and then use the dirt over top the concrete to protect fish protect the fish from rubbing against the concrete. The remainder of the pond would be bentonite. Thoughts?

Are concrete ponds really more expensive cause I was doing some rough calculations to build a humongous pond and it'd be tons cheaper to do concrete than EPDM liner

I need to understand the layers of concert pond. As I red articles they mention that first block then cement then fiberglass .. Is that sequence correct?! Is there anything between them?! And what's the good way to overcome the new pond syndrome that's mostly high ph comes from blocks. Is there a good way to do so?!

Just bought a house that had a 15x10 koi pond. The liner is trashed and I will need to be rebuild. Currently there is 20 koi of various size that we can see (the water is murky). The owner said he put 60 in years ago but we can see about 20.
To rebuild I will need to relocate them. What do you suggest as a good holding tank.

wow my favorite Koi? I seem to have a new favorite every time you and Shaun do a new show. I only have 5 Koi right now, a Ki Utsuri, Kin Matsuba, Chagoi and a Ki Kokuru. Two of these I bought from Breeders and two are imported but my favorite in my pond is an "Assorted Koi" i got at pet smart. I didn't buy him because of his beautiful coloring but because he seemed to have an attitude. He was grey with a single translucent yellow spot on his head. However he has grown into the most beautiful silver metallic and his yellow spot has grown to almost cover his entire head, his name is Jumper and he loves to be petted and hand fed. He is not my biggest Koi but he seems to be the Boss man in the pond. If I send a picture of him could you tell me what kind of Koi he is?

    Hello from the U.K.
I am digging a pond I will be concreting it but I'm not sure how to go about concreting the 'walls' can you advice please?
I assume for the 'floor' I will need to place rubble on the earth then cement, where does the chicken wire come into it, as the cement is drying or place it on top of the cement then another layer of cement?
    Thanks
