Elvis put this song to bed. One of the Righteous Bros' biggest hits. They had terrific high-pitched voices. However, once Elvis sung this live FORGET IT. The RB's just cannot come close to Elvis' passion and delivery. I LIKE the studio version from the RBs. But LIVE? NO ONE can match Elvis live. Elvis was an arranger, band director, singer and stage performer of legendary status and it shows in this song for sure. I've never seen a live version of anything the RBs did that gives me the same EMOTIONS that Elvis produces. EP was just on a DIFFERENT LEVEL. So, his security team came up with various plans, etc., to keep him safe and thankfully the show went off without a hitch. After the show was over, Elvis told his guys that when he started this song facing backwards like he always did, he thought to himself “Well, this is it, this is where he’s gonna get me bc I got a spotlight target on my back.” Then a second later as he’s facing Ronnie, the drummer, he thought to himself, “If this bastard shoots & misses me, this poor SOB is gonna get it!” He never lost his sense of humor even facing a death threat!
