    "The Legend of Raigousugi"
During the time of Abbot Ryougyou in the mid-15th century, there was a young monk named Soun who was exceptionally diligent in his studies and beloved by the villagers while undergoing training at Koukyouji Temple. One year on the anniversary of the temple's founding, exhausted from the all-night ceremony, Soun intended to take a short rest but accidentally fell into a deep slumber.
Passing by Soun's sleeping quarters, Abbot Ryougyou was astonished to find a tail attached to Soun's backside. It turned out that Soun was actually a tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog) in disguise.
Admiring Soun's desire to become a monk despite being a creature of the wild, Abbot Ryougyou gently concealed the tail with his robe and quietly left the room. When Soun awoke, he was ashamed to realize he had accidentally revealed his tail while sleeping. Determined to leave the temple, he bid farewell to everyone and climbed the great cedar tree in the temple grounds.
"I pray for acceptance from this cedar tree's branches and wish to go to the Pure Land. But even if Amida Buddha appears, please do not recite the nenbutsu. Please, do not say 'Namu Amida Butsu'..." Soun said.
Suddenly, auspicious clouds billowed around the top of the great cedar, and the welcoming of Amida Buddha occurred.
Overwhelmed by the sanctity of the moment, people forgot Soun's words and joined their hands in prayer, chanting "Namu Amida Butsu." At that moment, light turned into lightning, striking Soun, who was then propelled far into the eastern sky.
Several days later, the carcass of a tanuki washed ashore in a village by the river. This was the body of Soun, struck and carried away by the lightning.
The shore where Soun washed ashore became known as "Mujina-fuchi" thereafter.
The great cedar in the temple grounds was named "Raigousugi," and a small shrine erected beside it housed a mask believed to be carved by Soun himself, as the temple legend tells.
"Ryouchou Shounin and the Turtle of Iinuma"
When Reverend Ryouchou, the founding abbot of Gugyo-ji Temple, chose this land as the temple precincts, it is said that three monkeys appeared and recommended it.
To the east flowed the Kinugawa River, to the west lay Iinuma, and to the north, valleys surrounded the area like the shell of a turtle, hence it was called "Kamejima-yama" (Turtle Island Mountain).
At that time, the owner of Iinuma, a large turtle, appeared and said, "This land is mine. I want you to leave immediately."
Ryouchou Shounin requested to borrow the land for ten years, and the turtle agreed and left.
Ten years later, the turtle appeared again, demanding the return of the land. Ryouchou Shounin added "ノ" on top of the kanji character "十" meaning "ten" in the phrase "for ten years" written in the loan document, transforming it into the kanji character "千" representing "one thousand," thus changing it to "for one thousand years." As a result, the turtle left without saying anything.
Afterwards, Ryouchou Shounin changed the mountain's name to "Jukisan" (Mountain of Longevity) and it is said that he praised the virtue of the turtle.
The founding of Gugyo-ji Temple was in the 21st year of Ouei (1414), and the year 2414 AD, when the great turtle will appear again, is eagerly awaited.
    "The Tomb of Princess Senhime"
Senhime was born in 1597 as the daughter of Tokugawa Hidetada, the grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu and the second shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada. At the age of just seven, she was married to Toyotomi Hideyori, the son of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Following the downfall of the Toyotomi clan, she was rescued from Osaka Castle and sent to Edo.
At the age of 30, she remarried Honda Tadakatsu, bearing a son and a daughter, but she was widowed after only ten years of marriage. In her despair, at the age of 30, Senhime returned to Edo Castle, renouncing her worldly status and adopting the name Tenjyuin.
The 10th generation abbot of Gugyo-ji Temple., Reverend Ryougaku Shougyou, served as her spiritual advisor. Upon learning of the temple's decline, Senhime made substantial donations.
Subsequently, she spent her final years in Edo Castle's Northern Maru near Takebashi, and at the age of 70, she passed away, having lived a life filled with tumultuous events.
Koukyouji Temple preserves the precious legacy of Princess Senhime.
