- What is Codeine?
- Codeine is a Narcotic analgesic and also an antitussive agent. It stimulates opiate receptors in the CNS, it binds to opiate receptors and blocks ascending pain pathways; reduces patient’s perception of pain without altering cause of the pain.
Also causes respiratory depression, peripheral vasodilation, inhibition of intestinal peristalsis, stimulation of the chemoreceptors that cause vomiting, increased bladder tone and suppression of cough reflex.
- It is available as 15 mg, 30 mg, 60 mg tablets. and also available as tablets and effervescent combined with paracetamol.
- Codeine is used to relief of mild to moderate pain, alone or in combination with a non-opioid analgesic, and also used for cough suppression.

In answer to this question for others: The paracetamol is fine. The codeine 8mg is unlikely to cause harm. The caffeine is the worst offender here but should still be low enough to be fine.

@@Armwrestlingphilosopher I've researched it since, it does mess up your digestion system. You feel really bloated and constipated for 1-3 days after. You can try drinking lots of water, taking fibre or laxatives
Some people(very small %) codeine or dhc whatever doesn’t agree with your gall bladder and end up on horrific pain because of it. My ex couldn’t even take co codamol because of it.

@Gaussianform it is an opioid that metabolises into morphine from the liver and when it enters the brain. It is essentially very diluted or mild form of morphine.
