I was looking for sunscreen but somehow I happened to click here. This made my day, honestly! Social media had made me compared myself to too many influencers and had left me feeling insecurities, low self-esteem, and depression. I don't who I am anymore until this video. I like me, I love myself, and I know I don't need to change myself to please others. I am beautiful, kind and humble. Young and free! I should do what I feel is truly ME! I dont need no Kylie lip injections, bella hadid extended cat eye, kim kardashian fake butt and curves, etc, etc. I should eat healthy, workout and stay healthy. Appreciate myself and love myself more than I ever did. I wish you all happiness and love within yourself. Never compare yourself to those who don't even love themselves. Always remember you're BEAUTIFUL ❤

I’m so glad you found this video. And you’ve spoken much wisdom. Be yourself as there’s nobody like you and there’s only one you. And don’t care what others think of you. It’s our souls that are the most important thing.

“Enjoy your body, use it every way you can, don’t be afraid of it or what other people think of it, is the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.”
Sounds like an advice to follow to a fault and might as well milk yourself to the end of your career. Shortening it by repetitive lose of essence.

This song came out when I was 12. My dad told me to listen to it. At the time, as kid's do, I didn't get it and thought it was dumb. Well, I'm 35 now, 40 is around the corner. My parents passed away, my knees are shot out, I'm watching my idols grow old, or pass away as well. I hear this song and really wish I listened to it and let it sink in. Now I get it. And unfortunately it's a little bit late. If you're a kid and listening, please be good to your folk's. Mine passed away before they could ever see me create my own life. Or meet my wife. Or their grandkids. Just, listen to this song verbatim. Word for word. Don't just hear it. Listen to it. Because one day, you're 13 and think it's silly, and when you wake up the next day, your folks are gone, your body is hurting, and when you look around your friends are gone, and your world is something you never thought or planned it to be. My life isn't bad, far from it. It's just surreal to watch your heros pass on, or get old, watching your own kid's grow old and have kid's. Then, it clicks and you'll hear this and just start to cry. Mom and Dad, I miss you both with every fiber of my being. Save me a comfy cloud up there. See you when I get there.

T if you take into account what they said about jealousy before, i think what they really mean is that despite one’s instinct to compare one’s life and indulge in envy, in the end, that jealousy means nothing. no one is really keeping score on life, and it takes until death for some people to realize, hence, you don’t realize until the end that the race is only with yourself. essentially: vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

In 1999 when I heard this song for the first time, I was 16 years old, I have now hit 40. I listened very carefully to each and every word he said in the lyrics, and I believed back then that I understood every word he said, I even told myself, I will always wear sunscreen, enjoy my youth and see the world, and I did, oh boy I truly did. Sitting here listening to this song again, it just hits me different, because this message is exactly what I would tell the youth today, now I have grey hairs, fat belly, hurting knees, bald patch on my crown I understand what he was trying to explain to me when I was 16. He was trying to make me aware of how presseus my youth was, he was trying to make me understand how fast it slips away and how soon things will change, but for someone who has the whole world ahead of him, it is not possible to see, hear or understand what waits ahead. This moment for me is really extraordinary, because I clearly remember the song, and clearly remember that I tried my best to do as he said. Growing older is such a strange experience, but all in all, what I understand now is that I have to be present in every moment of my life, because tomorrow the youth of today is gone..

@@SawyerFools but still a great line because it’s so true. I grew up with a variation to this line (and the ‘support yourself don’t expect others to support you’). And when my life suddenly without a warning turned upside down in a few seconds aged 39 due to a stroke, this ‘song’ proved to be spot on. My siblings sticked by me. The precieus few friends remained close. The social security benefits for my not so cool job as a teacher kept my little family afloat. Half choice (job and paying for insurance) half chance (siblings, friends). My face is wrinkle free at 42 because I used the damn sunscreen every day since the age of 19 (when this song was a hit). My knees are still okay although my left side of my body has a life of its own now. Your body truly is the greatest instrument you’ll ever own. I just found out early in life. The half chance. Don’t be scared, just enjoy it while you can.

When my Dad passed away, I'd listen to this song on my headphones at night with the lights off. I'd just stare at the red standby light on my TV and get lost in the thought it was my Dad giving me advice. Many nights I'd lay there crying thinking I'd never come to terms with the fact I'd never see him again. It's amazing how music can heal the pain of losing a loved one. 7 years have passed, I can now listen to this song with a smile and think about how much of an inspiration he was to me 🦸‍♂️

I still don't understand the power and beauty of my youth... my youth was scarred, darkened and lost before it began. I'm 40 and finally fully diagnosed, and more importantly, recognised as chronically ill now after 20 years of struggle alone... one half genetics, one half the result of the power of abuse and manipulation that people had over me for so long, and that I withstood even while seeing myself slowly crumble because I believed in family or friendship or the greater good so, so much. I still don't know what to do with my life, not much tbh... it's about done in terms of expectation and opportunity... I've spent my life rattling around like a snail in a watering can, with PTSD and accumulating ills, wondering wtf? and why?... But y'know, I'm good... better than dead, less than lauded, loved or desired, and with enough of my wits left to see the truth in the 'difference is like dark and daylight' regarding our perceptions between then and now, and enough of my sense of humour left to laugh as much as I cry. It's been the hardest road but a very interesting and engaging one... and I'd do it again, even knowing how it all works out.

Baz Luhrman's "Romeo + Juliet" meant (and still means) alot to me when it came out back in the mid 90s. Because of the way he tells stories and puts them into pictures, the music he picked etc. I remember how I went to the cinema and it did something great inside of me, and so does this very video now. +CrownUpGuy Yes! Just turned 30 and listening to this song for the 1st time in years. So true. Even started to tear up a bit, which didn't happen back then. Knowing something intellectually and logically is one thing. But it's like I actually "get" and can relate/understand to many of the lyrics now. Still won't really "get" some of it, I think, until I experience it for myself (like the "be kind to your knees" bit).

Hey, 40 here as well, and still pondering about many things. I think that... as long as you have good days where you can smile, it does not matter much if you don't know what to do in life, or what you want to become. What matters is that you live life good, that you treasure your family, friends and even strangers that surrounds you. If you spread positive vibes to your surroundings, people will notice, and everything is great. That is what matters:)
I think this tune is... a masterpiece, that will never ever go out on date. Words of wisdom, we all can use to be reminded of now and then. And, I think I will listen to this tune till my final days.

I’m 20 now. It is crazy to me how fast this year has past by. But I’m in a really good state of my life in which I enjoy every day and try to smile as much as possible.
In the past year I learned a lot abt gratitude. I’m so happy that everyone in my close circle is healthy including myself everyday I have food on my plate and I can sleep in a warm save house. Another thing I’ve learned is that worrying abt the future is so useless. I have to live in this moment, day by day and enjoy the amazing life I have because I have so much that a lot of people don’t have.
In the upcoming years I hope everyone I love the most will be fine ofcourse. But I’ll also hope to find the love of my life. Someone that I can laugh with but also cry. Someone who is loving me unconditionally.
If I read this in the future and there is something horrible happening please know everything is going to fine. At the end of the day everything will fall on its place and I’m gonna be happy again. Don’t stress to much abt things you can’t control.

@James Allen I suggest recording it. Video or just voice. Ask your mom and dad how their childhood was. What their dreams were and what they imagined becoming as an adult. What they did for fun at different ages (kid, teen, early adult etc). What jobs they did. Fave and worst job. What they majored in if applicable. What their biggest regrets are. The best vacation, their top 3 fave memories. Things you did as a kid they still fondly remember. The worst experience they had. What advice they can offer today. And so on. Get to KNOW them as people, not just as parents :)
I asked my dad all that and a few years later he passed away (2016).
I kick my self to this day for not recording it in some way.
I knew he'd worked at a factory for a few decades before I was born and until I was a pre teen. As a kid it meant no more than "dads gone at work. He'll be home soon." well, talking with him about his life, I at the time was busting ass at my factory job and man. I looked at my dad and said, "I know first hand how hard it is working a factory job and how much it takes out of a person. Thank you so much, daddy, for working so hard to make sure we had all we needed, never went without and had vacation get aways. You did real good."
The look in his eyes was BEAUTIFUL. Like he felt he was appreciated from an empathic pov and not from a 'oh its a job' pov like kids have.
I'll NEVER forget that look. Ever. It TOUCHED him. Made him feel his hard work was appreciated and noticed. Adult me SAW what my dad did even tho child me couldn't.
Go ask your parents all that you can. Record it. Please. Once they're gone, you can't do that ever again. Do it asap. Grandparents also if they're still with you. They also have a TON to teach us.

I’m the same age as you and I do the same thing! I remember hearing this song on the radio as a kid and of course rolling my eyes and thinking it’s boring, but now I realize it’s so true 😩
“The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindsides you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday”, this is the part that always makes me cry. Especially now with COVID, who of us ever expected to be where we are now? It’s sad but also makes me realize how important it is to appreciate every moment, we still don’t know what’s coming next and I hope to listen to this song again at 40 and have taken some of the advice finally.
Happy new year, wishing you all the happiness ❤️

this hits so hard, and it’s so true. Basically, go and chase your dreams, anything is possible, you can be anything you want to be. You have to make your dreams happen, nothing is given to you or will come to you.

You're going to miss those when they're gone"...THAT one is a sure thing, it seems and has been affecting me for the last 12 years! ALL of this speech has rang true with me.. Yea.. it hits hard. 🥺 Everyone NEEDS to hear this at 18-25 years old! I wish I'd taken it more seriously in '99 when I was 23.. Now I'm double that 23 .... and wish like hell I could go back and tell that dumbass 23 yr old "HEY YOU MORORN! YOU NEED TO DO MORE THAN LISTEN TO IT! LEARN IT,PRINT IT OUT AND PUT IT ON YOUR WALLS! DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO TAKE WHAT IT SAYS AND AVOID WHAT IS POSSIBLE TO AVOID,... YOU BOZO!!" Ugh .. my knees SUCK NOW! 😭😭😭 I should have listened!! 🥲

I feel the same way with my dad. Motorcycle accident when I was 14 (I'm 30 now). I ended up being into a lot of the same things when I grew into an adult that he was. There isn't much I wouldn't give to be able to call him up and see if he wanted to go to the auto parts store with me and then "supervise" the replacement of whatever I bought. The only thing I can do to share the quality of father he was is to strive to reflect it upon my own two children now. It's the only way I know to keep his memory and contributions to this world alive without him.
