Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 7-4 win over the Pirates on Tuesday night at PNC Park as the Cardinals got a huge contribution from Nolan Gorman at long last.
Does his key grand slam parlay into a more consistent approach for the slugger? Gorman leads the team in homers but just has not been a consistent producer for the lineup lately. Maybe this one gets him going?
Kyle Gibson was a strikeout fiend but ran into trouble in the fifth inning. Still, a nicely pitched game by the Cardinals staff, particularly the bullpen that shut the door to ensure a win in the series opener.
Suddenly, the Cardinals are a season-high four games above .500!
Down on the farm, it was a big night for Thomas Saggese. But we might be on alert for an injury to Cooper Hjerpe...

I am really enjoying watching the young guys grow and come through each night. All the two strike hits are really impressing me as are these young players. It's just nice to see winning baseball in St. Louis again. Seeing Helsley setting a new record in the long line of great closers I have watched over the years is really impressive. I know today's game is different on the save rule, but Larry Jackson had 10 saves to lead the team my first year following StL. Great podcast. I really enjoy listening to your Cardinals report each night. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Down on the Farm segment is great.
Nice and quick, hitting a few of the most important names, what they did, and when you think they could make an appearance. Love being able to get that info without having to go dig it up.

So happy for Gorman. Indeed, nice to see the love in the clubhouse. Just as happy for Donnie. Guy is steady. His RBI bringing in the 7th run was crucial. Gibson was nails steady through 4, although it has to be said the umpire gave him a few pitches off the plate. The 5th. Yikes. Fernandez coming through. Huge signing. Go Cardinals. Happy July 4th to all. All time Cardinals record for Ryan. Good day indeed. Notice the wheels fell off after the 3rd base coach sent Burly on Wilson’s rocket to the corner. Horrifically bad baseball. Thankfully Donnie came through to cut into their momentum. Goldy’s 2 doubles. 😃 Congrats on the pickleball win. 😃😃☝️ Yep. Consistency in the offense would be nice.

Hey Brendan, wish you a happy belated birthday! Great show as always. I really appreciate all the hard work you put in!
There’s an excellent article by Bernie where he addresses the leadoff hitting woes with great data and insights. It seems Lars would be the most ideal candidate once he gets his timing back to ML pitching. Donovan in 5th spot and perhaps Winn in 8th or 9th.
I so wish Arenado would just go on an IL stint and let that back and elbow heal a bit. If we can get his offensive production back at the cleanup spot that would be a shot in the arm this team needs

With the Cooper hjerpe news, he was in the dugout at least from the 7th inning on and he was tossing a water bottle with his left hand so it was probably just precaution taking him out

Really need to beat up on the Pirates and Nats this whole month going 15-8 day before the deadline would be ideal… need to see bounce back performance from Mikolas… then love to see Mo pull the trigger on Scherzer during the Rangers series and keep Mad Max in STL when Rangers leave town.. only owed 13 mil.. thanks to NYM.. and bring the home state killer back home for his last potential go around.. paired with Gray 1A/B and make this final push.. Noot Edman coming back maybe Walker finds his groove move few guys to strength the pen.. and see ya in October!

Gorman hit .143 and .141 in June in 23 and 24, respectively. He hit .263 with 7 homers in July of 23. lets hope that trend continues this July. Regarding the Brewers, they are 19th in strength of schedule (they always seem to be playing crappy teams). However, they do play the Dodgers 7 times and the Braves 6 times, and oh yes, they play the cards 6 more times. it might come down to those games. The cards SOS is 9th with the Yankees, Braves, dodgers and Brewers on the schedule

Brewers still haven't played Dodgers or Phillies yet, they've had the most interleague play of any NL team, seems easier to have magic against AL teams which aren't as adept to playing against the Brew crew like NL teams are
Would love to see/hear some collab shows with LockedOnCardinals and the Redbird Rants podcasts.

Michael Siani had an OPS of .735 over the last 4 weeks. Baseball Savant has him as the most valuable defender in all of baseball across all positions this year. Unless he massively crashes before Edman returns I say he keeps the job.

Ill be honest, i had just moaned about why we persevere with Gorman after his 1st AB. When he stepped up with bases loaded and 0 outs i admit i was confident that he would get out but at least be a sac fly RBI. When that ball floated over the wall (at the deepest part of the park no less) I was ecstatic. Ive benched him in my fanstsy for the past few weeks so im still apprehensive about putting him back in this weekend.
Hope you had an awesome birthday B and keep up the good work, we appreciate you. ❤

I'm more confident in Gorman than I am in Goldschmidt at this point, and that's factoring in Gorm's slide over the last few weeks. Goldy has the worst OPS out of everyone in the starting lineup aside from Siani, and we all know Siani is only there for defense and baserunning. he's been flat-out awful for a guy making 26 mil/year, and there's very little reason to believe a 36 year old 1st baseman (who realistically should be DHing more at this point, if OAA is to be believed) will bounce back, even with his track record. there's a serious argument to be made for him being benched or relegated to a short side platoon role, now that we're firmly in playoff contention and in need of every win possible.

@@bschaeffer12 baseball doesn't work that way, pitching 4 perfect innings and then giving up 5 in the 5th still gives you a 9 era. All the runs count , no bonuses for looking good. It provides hope that he could possibly have a better outcome next time - he's got a 3.88 era and that's probably what we should expect. Pallante is showing some promise, but he doesn't look like he has the stuff to be more than a 4 or a 5 though.
