Ignition timing by ear🤗 Done that on a couple of cars in the past, Austin Princess 2200 straight 6, and my current Morris Minor after changing to electronic ignition with a new dizzy. Timed them both by ear, no pinking and both have had no issues and ran well. My Moggy runs beautifully after setting the ignition timing this way ages ago. Great stuff!
Because I have never done it before and trial and error is how I learn. There are plenty of 'experts' who will tell you the one true way to do things according to them. Oddly those ways seem to vary greatly from expert to expert! Sometimes learning from your own mistakes is the best way and I happily share them here so others might learn too. Even if just learning what not to do.

I really don't have much experience myself, I'm someone one with tens or hundreds of cars I have worked on (6 in total), so it can be a bit painful for me learning. Have a look at my motorcycle films. I REALLY don't know what I am doing there!

@@D3Sshooter I don't actually know! The 7 is in limbo at the moment since getting in on the road here is tricky and my time/effort/money is better spent on getting my Riley on the road first. That is the more valuable car and is actually easier to get on the road (easier but still not easy). I don't think any Austin 7s car really be thought of as 'quick' except maybe the factory twin cams but those are a pretty far stretch from a normal 7! Have a look on the Austin 7 Friends forum for all things 7 related. Some very knowledgeable people there. The ones who have grown up with them, built/owned hundreds of them, probably conceived in one :)
sorry, not a success. you should set timing to whatever state of tune your engine is, and have control over the throttle and then crank over. if correct, it should fire immediately. my race engines had a modified Citroën oil pump, a kiddy crank, my own pistons, and produced 42 bhp at 6500 rpm, with 60 psi oil pressure. I did have a 1932 box saloon, slow, but you were always first in the queue.
