- Great RPGs are rare but this one truly managed to grab my imagination. With it's combination of good action and a cool island, it's certainly fun, but is it worth buying? Find out in my review of Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dada!

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is an action role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom, published by Nihon Falcom in Japan and NIS America worldwide. A part of the Ys series, it first released in Japan for the PlayStation Vita in July 2016, with worldwide releases for PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, and Nintendo Switch following later. Passing the archipelagos of the Gaete Sea located south of mainland Greek, Adol is on a passenger ship called the Lombardia that is headed from Xandria to the continent of Eresia. However, the ship is attacked and sunk by a giant creature, and when Adol wakes up, he realizes he landed on the shore of a cursed island known as the Isle of Seiren. On his search for other survivors, he teams up with the noblewoman Laxia von Roswell and fisherman Sahad Nautilus to help his fellow castaways to survive and find a way to get off the island. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is an action role-playing game played from a third-person perspective. Players control multiple main characters, each with their own play styles. The island is open world, allowing for exploration anywhere. While playing, an abundance of materials will be collected from defeating local fauna, flora and opening by chests. These materials can be crafted into items that the player can use on their journey, such as healing items and stronger weapons.
This game is such a perfect example of how gameplay is king. Just having fun is all that matters and it nails the action! Thanks for watching and liking this video. :D
DreamcastGuy what port PC, PS4 or switch should I buy?
BigMac5 I read that the switch and pc port dont peform as well as the ps4 port, so ps4.
the dana side (powers ups and dungeon explorations is to give old players of YS a nostalgia feel, like oath in felgana or origin but for some reason dana side is not that fun like the others games) [sorry my bad english]
If you value portability get it on Switch or Vita. The best running version is on PS4 but the PC will get there eventually as it's constantly being patched
BigMac5 PS4is the way to go, the Pc version is broken, the switch version performs like the vita version which is pretty pathetic
I love that Falcom games are starting to get some more exposure. They certainly deserve it. :)
OmegaMetroid93 they certainly do!!!
Damn Right. I'm still waiting with bated breath for the western release of Trails of Cold Steel III (Come on XSEED, the 4th game is coming out in Japan and us non-japanese are still waiting for 3)
Yeah. At least it's basically confirmed that it will come to the west. Mr Kondo, Falcom's president, said that moving to the PS4 for CS3 was partially done to have broader appeal in the west.
It will happen, even if we have to wait a while.
OmegaMetroid93 I sure hope so. There are still plenty of questions left unanswered from the previous games (Rean's powers, Ouroboros, the witches that sent Emma, if I can get Rean and Laura to end up together)
Totally agree. I still remember back in the day people asking for fan translations of Falcom games since companies didn't want to localize them.
If you love Zelda botw type of a game and Mario Odyssey, you’ll love this game! This was my favorite game on Vita. Chopping onions kinda experience towards the end-I didn’t want it to be over.
so when you are towards the end of chopping an onion you come to the realization you don't want it to be over???
Oh god, don’t even hint sadness for this game please. I’ve been waiting for this game to come out on the switch for ages. Wanted to see how people liked the port, heard there’s issues with the port.
So glad more people are starting to cover this game
anthony brisson this *series
anthony brisson It on a system whit a fanbase who has no problem giving something different a chance.
Falcom is one of the best JRPG developers and anyone who is a fan of the genre owes it to themselves to play their games. Ys, Legend of Heroes, Tokyo Xanadu all great games. They don't have massive budgets so don't expect them to look beautiful, but they make their games with passion and care. The Trails of Cold Steel games are some of my favourite games in years and I really hope they will get ported to Switch (with all the added content from the PC release) since they were originally Vita games and Falcom needs a new powerful handheld for their games.
Ys Seven and VIII look ok though, i now have great expectations for IX
Hey, I bought the chinese version by accident. Does the update or patch also translate the chinese version to English? thanks
Tokyo Xan was soo amazing & slept on! I'm a gove this a try
How did a goty material game go so unnoticed for the mayority of youtubers, ( except HappyConsoleGamer) when it released on Ps4 last year.
Because it's not a "cinematographic experience" with "top notch" narrative that plays like a movie :P
The translation controversy kind of over-shadowed it's merits at launch. A lot of people that were initially interested ended up avoiding the game because of that.
I feel like the vast majority of people who ended up buying it didn't hear about the translation or were already Ys/Falcom fans.
As much as I love this game and both the company who made it, I gotta say that this isn't GOTY-worthy.
Tarks Gauntlet
The translation was kind of the reason why I didn't want to get it, honestly. If Sen no Kiseki 3 and 4 ever make it outside of Japan, I really hope NIS doesn't get their hands on it.
Pedro Aguilar Mora The only rpg games they care about on sony systems are the ones made by square enix.
It's weird this game is only getting the attention it deserves after it comes out on the Switch. I was all over the limited edition PS4 version the instant I heart it was announced over a year ago.
G P Yeah. Now if only NIS would stop messing the game up.
OtakuDaiKun sony don't care about these type of games.
OtakuDaiKun it's the first time I actually bought a Ys game even though I knew about the series long before. I kinda regret not trying it before more deeply.
INFERNO95 Sony America sucks.
nowonmetube I recommend Ys Oath in Felghana, Ark of Napishtim, and Memories of Celceta.
I'm puzzled as to how you thought the Dana story wasn't done well, but nevertheless I agree wholeheartedly with everything else you've said. It really is a great game.
@Jack Mahne agreed. Seems weird to not get into that stuff because it's what makes the game special and intriguing.
From what I recall, the non-playable dream sequences are only a handful of minutes long each, especially at the beginning of the game, where they were probably only one or two minutes, max.
A 9.5!? Wow!!! It's good to hear you enjoyed it! I can't wait to get this one.
I see fishing.....I am sold
Agreed with your high score as it’s one of my top favorites.. But still boggles the mind when you claim it’s too easy.. Or that the Dana story wasn’t the highlight of the game.. I thought the challenge level was just about right..
maybe he just played on easy or normal.
Late to the party but I played on hard and honestly it felt well balanced apart from that dragon statue boss, I actually had to grind for that one ... so I can imagine normal and easy are not challenging.
Never heard of this series until recently. So added this to my PS4 wish list on Amazon and hopefully sales go down either after Thanksgiving or Christmas as the price was far higher then I thought. Will be fun to get into another quality RPG down the line.
On sale ps store for 30 buckaroos
Played to this on PS4 last year. Great game.
Probably my second favorite in the 'Ys' series, behind Memories of Celceta.
Hi does the chinese version also have the english patch?
The Ys series has always been good. This one seems pretty different but also in a good way. I may pick it up! I really miss these type of low budget games that focus more on robust elements like good game design and exploration rather than crazy tech and bells n whistles!
It's really cool that you can get pretty much all of the games in this series on the vita with the exception of the 5th installment I believe
I tried YS origin highly recommended for those who like YS series. YS origin, Oath in Felghana, Ark of Naphistim, YS Seven and Memories of Celceta are def worth a try. If you got a PC that runs modern cards not that powerful all of them are able to run on your PC's.
I know this comment is late but, this game made me fall in love with my Switch. It was already a great console, but this game wqs so solid on it. The YS games had a very "handheld" feel to the older games, and it feels perfectly at home in handheld mode for the switch. The combat is just as solid, and there is hardly any visual sacrifices between the console versions. Definitely agree, this was one of the best games in 2018
I can’t believe that you think the game is easy, you must be played on “easy”, try inferno, everything can 2-3 shot you if you can’t maintain 70% flash move / flash guard. Also Dana dream is not annoying, you get to play Dana in her era after chapter 3, she is pretty powerful, and if you follow the story you will be shocked when seen Dana sleeping in a tree in front of you, whose times is millions of years before you, and yet still live! She also joins you as playable party member after she awake. Dana is a really successful char in the game.
In retrospect, the serial killer arc actually serves to showcase that human conflict is silly in the face of nature, since....
SPOILERS
Nemo was claiming that his actions were to give the castaways an evil to team up against in order to bring them together, but in actuality the threat of the island had already brought them together well enough (and continued to do so long after he was gone) and his actions were actually driving them apart with suspicion and fear because he was just a sadist with delusions of grandeur, right up until he found out that dinosaurs don't care about something as petty as moral philosophizing.
Just got the true ending. This game is truly a hidden GEM! ♥
You should still play YS: Celceta because that's the "prequel" for Lacrimosa of Dana, since there are some cameos and dialogues that involves Adol's adventures when he was in Celceta
I wasn't going to get this. Now: day 1 purchase on the Switch.
Looking forward to this one. I'm definitely considering doing a retrospective on the franchise, as I've been playing earlier entries a lot lately.
This is how I wanted Fantasy Star to play more tight control and speed. Y's is my favorite RPG series other than KOTOR but, Disney Star Wars has let me down , I don't think a KOTOR 3 or reboot will happen.
Now you should also play Memories of Celceta and Ys Seven since you have a Vita :D
Now that it's part of PS plus extra I think your review has helped me take a chance on it 🙂
It seems like people are finally figuring out this game exists, but it feels like I played this game a year ago on my vita.
Twon Games because you did lol the switch is getting another 60 dollar years old port:/ games great but come on, 60 bucks?
I don't think Falcom games get massive marketing budgets like AAA published games. The Switch is pretty starved for rpgs at this point, so that might (hopefully) work out in Ys VIII favour.
Fat Tiger Switch is not starving for rpgs we been getting rpgs every month? And it getting few really big one back to back in July and August.
Twon Games Good creative rpg games get overlooked on sony system. All they care about is final fantasy and kingdom hearts.
Best and most useful review from a gamer's POV, just what i needed and i am getting this! Thanks dude!
Thanks for the review! this gives me a slight Kingdoms of Amalur vibe to the combat and world?
Damn, i remember that game!
You made Laxia wear glasses? I see you're a man of culture as well.
Totally looking for a new RPG now I might check this out. I was maybe going with battle chasers before octopath. Seem like it is better. Or is it? what do you guys think?
This game surprised me. Being a huge YS fan I love the old ones, like Felghana, Origins, Naphistim etc, I like the side scrolling or isometric top down view. But when I saw Cel ceta and YS 8's graphics and team based combat, I thought I wouldn't like it. Now in Chapter 4 of this game I think it's probably the best in the series, although I still think Oath in Felghana has the best boss fights.
Gotta love the Ys series.
Let me help you put words on something you've been trying to describe during all of the video: in its structure it's actually a Metroidvania type exploration.
Find item beat boss open new path rinse repeat ...LOVE IT !
I wish we had more Ys style games like this.
Thank you for the great review!
Great review! Told everything needed to know, and made the game look and sound exciting!
In terms of action gameplay, what does Ys VIII most closely resemble?
Upon first glance it resembles a faster paced Monster Hunter, but anyone who's played it, what is it most like?
To be honest Ys series > Zelda
Hmmm some Ys games are better, some Zelda games are better
Thanks for the great review. I was considering this game. I knew that you would have a great review that would help make my decision.
Getting a little bit of a dark cloud vibe from this. Will have to try this out when price drops a bit.
I beat ys the oath in felghana last year and my only complain was how mush you have to grind to beat certain boss, overall I think it's underrated series,,this one seems interesting modern jrpg ,I heard it's the best in the series, definitely going to buy it
I absolutely loved this game! fun gameplay, deep and compelling story!
Yours and RGT’s review really makes me want this game
Yay! Glad to see a title that isn't "Does it Suck?"
It's sad that Ys is unknown in 2018 :( especially since it's as old as finally fantasy, with ff1 and ys1 both launching in 1987
Thanks for the great review, im pretty interested in this, it reminds me a bit of skies of arcadia ( maybe because of that guys pirate suit). Is there a day night cycle?
paul slade No there isn't. You can do specific missions at night but that's it.
paul slade I like just for the fact of mentioning Skies of Arcadia, the most captivating JRPG of all time :P
Was looking up skies the other day! I mis that game they should port it to the switch it was incredible!
excelent story, excelet characters, excelent gameplay, excelent past, enemies....very common (except for some bosses) and awesome OST, this game wont dissapoint you (hope the switch gets the extra content that the ps4 have)
The collectors version of Y's 8 on the Playstation 4 is very expensive. On E-bay its going for $165.
Any chance you could review Ys Origin? its available on the PS4 and I think you would enjoy it!
You have the option to play in hard mode.
I would love if Nintendo released Y's Origin for the switch. as well as the chronicles. i still tote around my Vita when i go on vacation to play the Y's games. Vita has all the PSP, and most of the PC games on demand.
Lacrimosa of Dada!? LMAO I just noticed that, and it made me laugh really hard for some reason.
Hey don't forget to check out Y's Origin on PS4. Its cheap and very fun
MOFOS GAMES this or origin
I haven't played this yet but i really want to because Origin was a lot of fun.
Max, did you play Ys IX?
Waiting on your Ys 9 review
LOL, most of RUclipsrs ignored this game when it came to PS4 & even on PC just months ago (especially the terrible port condition on launch day). Now that it comes to Switch, everybody treat it like second coming or something ...
For people that don’t know this game was made by the company who pioneered action rpg, so they know what they are doing with this game.
Love your videos but is it just me or do you say "it makes it where" a lot. It makes it where you say "it makes it where" 5 times during a video.
nofriendsclub ? HA! best comment
your comment made it where i read your comment about him saying "it makes it where" right where he said it... and now i'm more aware of it.
How many more times can Adol suffer amnesia before his brain turns into goo...?
I'm still mad that they screwed up the PC port and they was fixing it for 7 months. Gladly they fixed some issues but there are some minor issues they need to fix. I don't know if anyone has the game working pretty well as of on PC.
I was about to get the switch version but hearing that it runs 30fps I'm like nope I'll get the other version.
Oh this looks great but ive just blown a shed on Batman RV Startrek BC and a couple of Retro games this will now have to wait till next month i think.
Great breakdown. I'm gonna give it a shot.
I really love this game! (and all of the series) I played it on ps4, and I think I'll get it for the Switch too
You've taken me from no interest to very interested. Good job.
Trying to figure out if I should play this or Ni No Kuni 2. Nice problem to have.
That's such a bad review, the story of Dana is skippable? That's the main story! That's why I kept playing, to know about the island.. To each his own I guess
Good review Dude.
I haven't played this game yet....is this good on Vita?
I've played a lot of Ys games and got tired of them, is there something that separates this from the other ones?...
Did we just find DreamcastGuy's GOTY? :P
This is the Vita game of the year for 2017.
I need to find time to play it. There's so many games coming out. Either way I'm buying it first and worry about making time later. XD
"this game is easy, i never died once"
meanwhile me halfway through an inferno mode playthrough... lets just say ignorance is bliss... : ^ ]
Dada 😂
Check the description
i played alot of FF games and the last one i enjoyed playing was FF xii so i tried FFxv for two hours, but couldnt get into it. YS viii, i played the whole day yesterday nnd now i want to go back to play it. this game has better gameplay than FF xv.
Now I'm buying it
I just started to get into the y's series...
The PC port had a garbage translation, so I was worried for this game. Not anymore though, thanks for the review
Have never even heard of the Ys series until this game, ended up picking it up and have had a blast with it so far!
Now the Legend of heroes needs to get released into the switch
Yep, I so want the pc version (with all the added voiced lines) of Trails of Cold Steel to get ported to the Switch and ps4. I already have the Vita version, but I will buy both the switch and ps4 version because I love those games and to support Falcom/Xseed
Fat Tiger
Cold steel would be great but for many people it would probably be the first trails game and as someone whom played all trails games I would say trails in the sky1&2 is the best entry point for the series. They are the best example of how this franchise works.
Kain Highwind However, Cold Steel is apparently the most successful of the legends of heroes series. I just an article that said that the trails series has sold 3.5 million and 1.5 million was just from Cold Steel. Though I would love to see the sky trilogy finally come to consoles in full (plus the crossbell games that were never brought here) I think cold steel would be the prime choice because it is the most popular. It is a pretty big accomplishment considering the previous trails games were on the psp which sold ~65 million more units than the vita (apparently the vita versions sold much better than ps3)
Playing sky right now, and while it's MC is definitely better, can't say it's the best entry point aside from playing it first so it doesn't get spoiled by the events of cold steel.
Game is great, don't get me wrong, but it's combat is very slow and they don't build on the mechancis at all over the course of the game. What you have once you unlock your orbments is what you have from start to finish of the first game.
That sort of thing can push people away from a series. Definitely recommending others start at Cold Steel 1 and 2, then go back if they feel so inclined. I feel if they can get in to cold steel then they'll want to go back and put up with sky's short comings, but if they can't get into sky as I've met many who could not, then they may be too scared to gamble on Steel which fixes many of peoples biggest complaints while still keeping the world building falcom is known for.
This game is up there with Arc the lad series
strange that some people say they love the story and some say it sucks
Ys is actually not just an unknown rpg tbh
I agree a really fun game! Great video too.
Fuck it. Im buying this shit. Looks fucking amazing.
Glad you like it. It's a really good game =)
my introduction to the ys games was one and two on PSP and I loved everything about it it was so amazing except the combat I just can't wrap my head around bumping into people it just doesn't feel right I mean I grew up on term base jrpg with final fantasy it it just feels awkward to me I know I know a lot of people love it and they think it's amazing I mean I love the music the characters in the story but the combat is just so cringe for me it's like watching one of my friends get into a fight but they're only method attack is bumping it just doesn't feel right I know a lot of you may hate me for this for even thinking of saying I hate anything about Ease east yeast Ys but I just can't get past the combat I am sorry
Hey DreamcastGuy Unknown RPG not if you know TurboGrafix 16 keep dreaming this should have been shown at E3 how sad 20 Plus minutes of Smash Love the Smash fans!
Why you call the monsters people lol just joking Dreamcast Guy. Have been a huge fan of yours for years lol just funny hearing the monsters called people.
I have noticed a lot of games kind of..BECOMING ys recently.
The score seems to be way too high when going through other reviews of the game..
how many people got the vita version,.. :(
i dunno, i actually thought the story was very good.
Landis 97 it very well done sometimes everyone have there own preference, I really love the story I think it one of my favorite stories tied with p5 and ff7
Omg 9,5 you really enjoy game :D
Went as far as to play through it a second time just so I could Platinum Trophy it. Honestly it’s amazing & the plot of the game? Awesome!! Look for survivors? Help your lil camp. Protect it. It’s a game that Nintendo switch fans should be happy to have. Love it! Highly recommend it!
Jorge Rdgz should I get this game or octopath
Everyday Geek deff this one you won’t be disappointed
game looks great
Ys 8 is good but ys memories of celceta was much better IMO.
Game has little problem on pc but i dont mind that much :D its very fun game :D
Why is everyone Reviewing this game at the same time ? I find it weird since it doesn't even release till next week lol
review embargo lifted today
