      Acti-Blizz sees it as undercharged because they see that they were too generous on skins vs the competition. Apex and Fortnite were charging $20 skins on a regular basis while you have a good chance of earning a legendary through lootboxes and credits earned through progression.

    Don't forget that Overwatch 2 (watchpoint pack) was sold for 40$ if you wanted access to the future PvE mode (which, as they stated, would not be free). Now that they canceled most of the PvE, they are refusing refunds, because the Watchpoint pack also included some skins and access to the first battle pass, which you've "consumed", so they're not refunding anything. I just went through a couple of hours exchanging emails with support asking for my money back, which ended with me canceling my 109 euro preorder of D4 Ultimate Edition for PS5. They can keep their 40$, which they literally scammed people out of, and I'll just get my 110$ back and never buy anything from them again. Great job.

    Let's not forget that the main reason they clearly did not put any resources into PVE is because there is literally no way they can profit off of it, and they would also need to think of worthwhile rewards for PvE which guess what, if good enough could curb the urge to buy from their ridiculously priced store / battle pass

    • @arlisongbird9386
      @arlisongbird9386 Год назад +24

      There's some speculation that the reason they wanted OW2 PvP 2.0 is because the box's were too generous and profit from that store wasn't giving what they wanted, so they made the PvP 2.0 to push the new monetization.

    • @GodsThirdEye

      @@arlisongbird9386 I guarantee that was the reason. In OW1 you actually feel progress leveling up and getting boxes to get gold skins for your fav characters. Now that the boxes are gone what's the point in leveling up and playing the game at all where there is no reward system. When OW2 came out I got the first battle pass to play the new characters but leveling up felt pointless the battle pass rewards aren't worth it. I haven't played this game since and was waiting and excited for a story mode. Now it's over. They ruined PvP and destroyed the story mode. I'm never playing another blizztarded game again. Activision should have never been allowed to buy blizzard. They are to blame for this nightmare. Goodbye OW I had fun memories from the first game. All good things must come to an end. • @Lenariet
      @Lenariet Год назад +10

      I'm aware I might be a minority with that mindset, but why does everything nowadays have to "reward" you something? What happened with just enjoying gameplay and in case of PvE also the cooperation with others and/or the story elements? Has this truly become such a foreign, wild concept?
      To see everything judged so strongly for some arbitrary, artificial headpats is kinda breaking my old-ish gamer heart. Everything nowadays needs lots of random shiny bling bling and progression bars and skins and sh*t to satisfy the narcisstic unicorns in people. All of online gaming has become one huge fashion wanking circle show.
      It's sort of tragic and repulsive in a certain kind of way. Because if this is actually the reasoning they had to cancel PvE then it clearly very strongly affects overall game design, negatively so. Fun doesn't matter, creativity doesn't matter - only that you gain more and more XP, that your progression bars everly move from left to right no matter what and that there is some legendary skin you can hunt to wear while swinging your digital p*nis around everyones' faces.
      I guess I'm making the right choice to throttle back on online games and head for genuine singleplayer again. I'm too old for this nonsense.

      This is the key difference, and this is the issue: it would be one thing if those systems never existed in the first place, it's completely another thing when they did AND THEN were taken away, with "taken away" being the key factor here - because that's exactly what it is from psychological perspective. First you had something, now you don't have it anymore because devs decided to take it away. Guess what, people usually have a negative reaction when you take away things from them.

    The craziest thing about Overwatch is that when the game first launched back in 2016 or whenever it was, they actually had something special there. You could argue there were balancing issues as some heroes just wiped the floor with others, but that also created an environment which encouraged teamwork and coordination. Hero counters were a huge part of competitive strategy, identifying shifts in the opposing teams strategy and shifting your own as a team of six in response. Despite a lot of trash talk, early OW1 competitive was exciting and intense. Over time Blizzard made balancing changes that stripped away the things that made many heroes both lethal and fun to play, resulting in slower moving shielded teams with less hero swapping and matches hinging on the specifics of map design or, more likely, which team had members which would throw first. I played hundreds of hours and thousands of matches of OW1 during the first 2~ years of its life and watched as Blizzard targeted every single fun and exciting element of the game and destroyed it with uncanny precision.
    When OW2 launched, I got back into it during Season 1 for a while. Most of the changes made between the time I stopped playing and OW2's launch were bad ones, what a surprise, but being the first time in years I'd played OW, I discovered that despite being a shell of what it once was, there was still fun to be had - it was just incredibly sporadic and tightly rationed amongst large stretches of frustration and dismay. Then Season 2 launched. I think I lasted all of 2 - 3 days. It's as if Blizzard sought out the worst things about OW2's balancing in Season 1 and dialled them up to 11. For instance, in Season 1, they made the ridiculous decision to turn Doomfist, previously a DPS, into a tank, but his abilities weren't retooled to compensate aside from some minor adjustments. Mostly they just nerfed his damage and buffed his health. This made him an absolutely abysmal tank and a crap DPS. Not to mention OW2 dropping the number of tanks in a team from 2 to 1 meaning that if your PUG group got a Doomfist, you were almost guaranteed to lose as none of your DPS or supports would have any kind of protection - Doomfist's abilities always best positioned him as a flanker, and a "tank" who is off on his own flanking the enemy team isn't tanking in any way, shape or form. Doomfist was always a problematic hero, but turning him into a tank was the second worst decision they made with him.
    What was the first, you ask? In season 2, at least in the beginning (I quit within days, so I can't rightly speak for how this changed in the weeks following the season's launch,) they buffed his damage into the stratosphere. Now not only did he have a tank health pool, but he could effortlessly zoom across distances and one hit more fragile heroes. Because his abilities encouraged flanking, he was always circling around the enemy team alone, something that spelled sure defeat in Season 1 as it left his team vulnerable, but if Doomfist could slip behind the enemy team and one hit 2 - 4 members including the healers in the span of a few seconds, there was nobody left to hurt his team.
    I played a lot of support in OW, and the few days I tolerated of Season 2 were the worst experience I'd had with the game period. Every team had a doomfist. Every match consisted of being one hit before my team even noticed the enemy doomfist was behind us (and, naturally, our own doomfist was off fisting enemy DPS and offering us no protection) and then running back to the team only for the same exact thing to happen again. Then some shitter with zero situational awareness would complain about a lack of healing in chat, oblivious to their own inability to provide their support with any protection. Bad players, DPS mains in particular, blaming supports for their own failings was a constant in OW since day zero, but by Season 2 of OW2, it was every single match. You'd have healers focusing on healing their team, constantly being picked off and yet still posting healing numbers in excess of 10 or 15k with more eliminations than both DPS being blamed for the DPS dying and failing to get kills. Meanwhile your teams Doomfist, because to reiterate, the tank role was doomfist 85%+ of the time at this point, was off fisting anyone he could find with a ravacious glee.
    Season 1 had a lot of problems, but I still managed to enjoy myself despite a lot of frustration and misery. But the ridiculous decisions Blizzard made for Season 2 were honestly the best statement of intent and claim of capability I could ask for: the idiots making decisions in OW2 had absolutely no idea what they were doing, hadn't taken the time to actually think any of their decisions through or properly test them (if they had paid attention and/or given two shits, they would have seen shit was broken as fuck and not launched those changes), and would continue to run the game in such a way, which is to say straight into the ground. Yes, I quit when things were especially fucked. I'm sure patches in the coming weeks addressed those issues. But honestly, I'd seen enough. It was less about the state of the game and more about the competence of the developers and my faith in them. I found myself 110% certain that the overall trend in enjoyment and quality was on a steep decline despite moment to moment rises and falls. I wanted off the wild ride. And I got off. And I haven't looked back.
    And all that is without even mentioning the MTX in OW2. It was so abhorrent that people were literally begging to have loot boxes back. Imagine that! You remove loot boxes and replace it with something so much worse that people want loot boxes back! "No baby, don't hurt me with the knife today, use your fists instead, please!" And now that the last bastion of hope that OW could be anything but a morbid disappointment, the PvE mode, has been shitcanned? Well... Overwatch is finished. And Blizzard. They're finished too.

      I have no experience of OW2 and only a little of OW1 but I enjoyed reading that, thanks.
      I will also agree that balance is in itself a balance; a good game has _drama_ - highs and lows, the unexpected and the mundane. Polishing away all the quirks and wackiness may make for a more competitively viable game (for the 1% engaging in that) but it rubs out its casual appeal (for the remaining 99%). World of Warcraft followed a similar arc: early expansions had weird and situationally absurdly powerful items and over time it was diluted to just being your class' three primary stats in a perfect 3:2:1 ratio. Balanced, perhaps, but also incredibly _boring_ .

      Not only did they get rid of the original OW, they stopped making any meaningful content for it long before OW2 was "released". They let the game go stale, get legitimately boring. You can only play the same handful of maps for so long before you get bored and move on to other games. Without community made maps like TF2 has things get stale real fast. And when OW TOO came out, it was just insulting. The only other game that has pissed me off that badly was World of Warcraft and how insulting that game became in BFA. I had to walk away from both for my own mental health, games shouldn't make you that angry... they're for fun, they're an escape from the real world. There are so many other games out there that are more deserving and respectful of your time.
      With all the plates they're trying to spin with the upcoming Diablo 4 I have no faith that it'll be done in a fun and respectful way. Charging for a full priced game (with deluxe and mega-deluxe versions available as is industry standard) and then having a battle pass and microtransactions on top of that is a pretty clear warning sign, as least in my opinion. Spend your money however you want, just maybe think twice before you pay blizz for anything these days. Spending so much time developing monetization platforms and framing them as a normal and great part of a game instead of just making a great game is not exactly consumer friendly.

    Gaming as an industry went from a niche activity to something of a significant subculture to a widely accepted and consumed product. And as such the corporate, smelling big profits grew on it.
    If I were to guess a lot of the actual devs who wanted to make videogames and 10-15 years ago dreamed at working at Blizzard now do that as any other 8-5 job
    And even from my recent personal experience I can tell, the higher you go on the corporate ladder the better the people at explaining their bullshit in a way that can trick you believing in it.
    I don't know how to punish that.

    It’s simple. Stop buying games that aren’t finished. Stop pre-ordering. Look at reviews. If the game isn’t free, then it better be finished. If it’s free, well decide if your time is worth the risk. Don’t buy skins or anything until the game is at a point you consider it worth it. Roadmaps and promises from money making machines mean nothing.

    The most criminal part is that they were not making a game from scratch, they already had the foundation of the game working well. Also the other parts of the company are heavily focused on pve (WoW or Diablo) so they'd have access to documentation why pve things were designed in the way they were and could even ask for these reasons ppl working in these sectors. As you design pve content you can easily reuse pve assets to create pvp stuff (like buildings, materials or objects for creating pvp maps). With all these things you add on top of that they've had few years working on this.
    This truly is an admission of incompetence of the Overwatch team.

    I bet what really happened is daddy Bobby, CEO Activision Blizzard, came into the office, screamed that they weren't making money currently because they were working on the single player and forced them to go live with Overwatch 1.5.
    [Edit:] I didn't spend a dime on skins/lootboxes in Overwatch 1 and I found the free lootboxes they gave and currency you would get for dupes to buy skins you wanted was more generous than any game I have seen that have implemented systems like it. I had a ton of skins in Overwatch 1 including skins of the highest rarety tier. They would give you a free loot box for just simply playing the different gamemodes and it would reset (I forget the reset timer, but it was very generous, if I recall, it was a daily reset but I am not certain).

    • @yhormthemidget
      @yhormthemidget Год назад +10

      One of the biggest problems of OW2 is that it has basically zero progression. Neither general long term, nor moment-to-moment. In OW1 you always had a free lootbox just around the corner, or an icon border to earn. You got the skins, from th3 boxes and everyone was a happy camper.
      OW2? Yeah, you have a paid battlepass with nothing in it but an ugly as sin ultimate skin at the end (all 3 were abysmal. Weebbait or coomerbait). Icon borders? Gone. They are toxic, just as toxis as end of game cards, the on fire effect or a working scoreboard.

      The press release makes it sound like the devs are incompetent. That may have something to do with it, as they were given a deadline and didn't meet it, *but* was that deadline realistic to begin with? What anyone with a passing familiarity in the current-day games industry and late-stage capitalism in general should realize instantly is that "We couldn't get it done to Blizzard quality fast enough without making PvP suffer" is spin for "the executives made us cancel PvE because it was taking resources away from pushing loot boxes in the pursuit of infinite exponential profit growth."

    I think the "over promise, under deliver" problem is prevalent in the gaming space. A good example of it done right is is the 2019 Battletech video game and kickstarter, where the devs consistently said to questions about adding x or y feature "We know what we can realistically get done in the amount of time and the amount of money we have, so that wont be in for lanuch if things are successful then maybe it can be DLC" even though they got much much more in funding than they expected.
    Time and again studios tell us about their grand plans that are unrealistic and they cant deliver on it, we need to be treating projects with much more sscepticism.

    The reality behind it was ActiBlizzard executives and other higher ups said "How can we charge for things we said would always be included in the retail price people have already paid? I know, let's promise a bunch of content to justify adding a 2 on the end."
    Now, for me personally, I only really started playing after OW2 came out. I bought it ages ago in OW1 era, but never got into it, but I specifically remember I paid £25 and it was meant to be 'all content inclusive'. It's what put it above all of the competitors which went with a more freemium method. This is not something they can monetize, so it had to go. That's how I see it 100% and always have. It's once more Blizzard completely screwing their fanbase, but at least at this point we all expect it.
