One thing I love about these old dating videos is that they encourage you to get to the point. The talking stage exists today because some ignore that rule
you know, the parents in the 50's said the same things about telephones. "our dating approaches were different than the 6pm call, "you available tonight?"". People always romanticize their own childhood and think things are worse now. it's not.
Jessica Mann “people always think better of their own childhoods because they romanticize it” is a cop-out for the fact that things CAN worsen over generations. The elders may see dating as worse now, but it very well may be.
in 50 years time people will say the same thing about today. probably it will go something like "wow this was very different from talking to holograms with our brain chips".

At least the majority look like teenagers. Some of these educational films show people way past their teenage years. One word for this situation: Awkward. Well presented as it's always awkward and not just way back in 1953 either
Watching this during quarantine...born in 1985. I'm about to start binge watching leave it to beaver. I'm tired of housewives, cardi b, and overt oversexualization of women.
Jeez, George looks like he's about 9-years-old, while Mildred appears to be about 17. She better not wear any high heels, otherwise poor ol' George'll only be up to her navel!
Don’t worry, it’s been nothing but the shallow end for decades, so no matter when you did it you would be liable to hurt yourself. Wade in slowly using the stairs and hanging on to the grab bar. Make sure there is a lifeguard on duty. Don’t even consider Tinder and such… There are still sharks and barracudas depending upon the pool. Easier to see if it is a clean pool. Good luck finding one of those…
One thing that was obvious to me was how both the guys & the girls made the effort to look their best for each other. All the guys looked sharp, and the girls looked radiant in their dresses, beautiful!
They look like middle school kids. I think the narrator mentioned the 8th grade dance? Some kids that age still haven't hit puberty. He's probably just a late bloomer.
Reminds me of an episode of "Happy Days", where Richie made a date with a very tall, but pretty girl. He didn't realize how tall she was and the irony is, she dressed up like the ,Statue of Liberty, at the Halloween party. Lol
Future predictions: Operation Yewtree arrest Mildred in 2015 over an historical incident with a 12 year old at the Winter Frolics in 1953. Bill escapes the draft by hiding in his parents' attic for 5 years. Helen discovers LSD and cops off with Janis Joplin at Woodstock Joan marries Tom straight out of high school, gets a prescription for Valium and doesn't re-surface until 1986.
@@davidmoriah4176 thank you. I went through a stage of bingeing these fantastic videos. I completely forgot this reply. I would have been rubbish at being a 1950s American teenager. Scotty- "Hey Marsha. What say we get a root beer float and get to first base behind the bleachers?" Marsha- " That train left the station long ago mate. I've been at it with half the football team and half the cheerleading squad since I was a sophomore. I'll take the root beer float though'"
@@akrenwinkle Indeed, but whilst I was drinking my root beer float I'd be making plans to redress that oversight and I'd be pretty optimistic. Scotty would be sat aghast, his sister Peggy Sue is a cheerleader and she's seemed pretty chipper of late. He thought it was because she'd aced her calculus test but now he's not so sure. One thing is sure, he's not taking this shameless hussy to the sock hop,. He's been plying her with root beer floats after school, every day this semester and he's not got as much as the cloth tit! As you can tell, I'm not American, I've just thrown in words I've heard in movies. The cloth tit? I'm not sure how to translate that into American but I'm sure you get the idea
Totally but I've had a different situation. When I studied in middle school a lot of teachers were very negative about kids dating. I remember even girls who were studying very well and happened to be dating were called airheaded and promiscuous by teachers. Once I wore shoes with little platforms to school and one teacher said "Today wearing heels and what's next? Tomorrow gonna come pregnant?". It scarred me for life.
This dating stuff in this form seems very American to me and certainly didn't exist in Europe at the time. Most European schools for 10 to 18 year olds were single-sex well into the 1970s, so the young people wouldn't meet in school. In Communist countries, coeducation became the norm, but even there, parents wouldn't have allowed their 14-year-old daughter to go out with a boy! Young people in the 1950s would rather go out as a group with friends, not as a pair. In Communist countries, there were lots of communal activities (building) for youth, where young people could meet. A place where young Western middle-class people in Europe could freely meet members of the other sex were dancing schools. (My paternal grandparents met at a dancing school in the 1940s, my maternal grandparents at a dance - my grandpa's brother was my grandma's dancing partner and introduced them to each other). Chaperoning meant that the mother, grandmother or another older female family member came along, but that fell fast into disuse after World War II.
"Awkward maybe, but the date is made." Best line ever
🤣 Story of my life
YESSS!
George is a true player going out with a gal taller than him.
I was going to say George looks like he's about twelve years old
Confidence is key
Taller than him? Its like he's going out with the Statue of Liberty.
Bet ✊🏿

This was good for people with anxiety. For me the first step of anything is the most difficult, but once done, it becomes more easy x
I like that they use swimming as a metaphor for dating. I quitted learning how to swim.
I would drown
George's first date was with a 30 year old bobby-soxer.
NO, IT WAS 40 YEAR OLD 40-CATS LADY
And her name is Mildred!
Mildred did 5-10 in prison after her date with George
"Old phone. Who dis?"
Yes? Yes? Yes?
I'm either away from my desk or not at home. Your message is important to me. Please leave a message and I'll get back to you."

I watch a couple episodes of Leave it to Beaver every night before bed. It's so relaxing. 😌

Seems like Mildred likes "to rock the cradle." Seems they weren't so innocent after all!😉
how tall and old are they at the time ?
I think George IS Mildred’s new puppy…
Good video..George was a natural his first time.
George's first date with the Statue of Liberty. And Bill Jenkins at 4:30 betrays his Boston origins inviting her to a 'potty'.
Bloody hell I laughed so hard, I burst a rib😂😂😂
What happens in the porta potty stays in the porta potty…
Nobody showed us how to date. Plus if you don't know much asked the girl in person.
George would put most of today's "dating coaches" to shame.
Dating and Diving. There's a connection there, I know it.
I didn't make the plunge when I was in high school. Now I have to dread the bigger dive.

Definitely habit forming.

Me too. I admit I'm powerless over them. Is there a 12 step group for us?
These parties need a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll
And a little LSD in the punch bowl!😜
I was 16 in 1953. None of this rings any bells. Perhaps because I left home that same year.
I left home at 16 too! Hope you have a good life!

Mildred went on to have a successful career with the WNBA.
Dating was so far different back in the 50s than 2022. First date kiss second date sex and ECT.
It’s good that she got here doctorate. This film is a big deal. I guess my PhD is in the wrong field lol
Why is George friends with and dating people at least three years older than him?
Hes a cool guy, that's why

It’s middle school lol. My 12 yr old kid is 5’6” and his friend who is 13 is a full 7” shorter. Puberty strikes at different times!
They just didnt have the actors i guess

The age old dilemma of a boy to shy and scared to ask a girl to a dance.
