According to the few survivors of Treblinka; Ivan the Terrible was killed in the prisoner uprising. One person years later claimed to have seen Ivan the Terrible at the brothel in 1945 but this was never confirmed. More than likely he died in the uprising.

I'm Polish. I wanted to remind you, because it is often not mentioned - the Germans not only killed Jews in concentration camps, but also millions of other Poles (Christians), Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, Homosexuals, and political opponents and others.
Many Ukrainians collaborated with the Germans and showed great cruelty. Today, most of our society helps and sympathizes with Ukrainians, but a large part of the nation still has a strong memory of their atrocities and great distrust, often reluctance. I know and understand that today's Ukrainian or German is not responsible for the evil of his ancestors, but many people think differently and still look at them as a threat. After 80 years....

While the Nazis did murder Jehovah's Witnesses, Homosexuals and political opponents, they were not marked for extermination like the Jews, Gypsies, and Soviet Commissars. One could repent from being a Jehovah's Witness or turn from homosexuality-they were even used as servants in the house of Auschwitz Commandant Rudolf Hoess. Only Jews and Gypsies were sent to the death camps like Treblinka, Sobibor, Chelmno and Belzec.
I have not even read or heard from any reports or testimony of Einsatzgruppen looking for homosexuals or Jehovah's Witnesses in the Soviet Union to murder them. They only dealt with the murder of Jews and Gypsies.

I just saw a video of a young woman who appeared to be in her 20's. The interviewer asked her who Hitler was. She said, "I don't know. Is he a hip-hop artist? Hitler would be a great hip-hop name." I was stunned. I once believed there was no way we would ever see a repeat of the atrocities of WWII. But seeing the political climate of today, the ignorance, and the attitudes of many, I fear this horror could easily return.

@@16rumpole How can you be so sure? The Holocaust was a terrible thing but that doesn't give Zionists (as opposed to regular Jews) a right to inflict suffering on so many even in reprisal. The situation in Gaza today is only going to radicalise more Palestinians to sympathise with Hamas. As the side with the upper hand, it's up to Israel to explore other methods to delegitimise Hamas in the eyes of the Palestinian population. For decades, the Palestinian issue has been a rallying point for the Arab world's stance towards Israel. Solve that problem by allowing Palestinians back on ancestral land with EQUAL rights to Israelis. We all know both sides have some claim to the land going back centuries. But we all know they won't because they don't want to share any land with the Palestinians. I think Israel defining itself as an exclusive Jewish state has painted them into a corner they can't back out of. Also there's the issue of seeing themselves as "chosen" people, a concept that can very easily be stretched to mean they're somehow "better" than others and which is incompatible with modern thought.

My Daddy was in a group who liberated one of the smaller camps. He was affected terribly the rest of his life. He didn’t talk much about it, but the few times he did, he mentioned how he’d never forget the skeletal condition of the survivors, the smell of the prisoners, and living with the idea that something that awful could be allowed to happen. Don't get me wrong, it was a horrific war and yes, they were brave. I hardly know what to say about such an uninformed, ignorant and callous statement. Whatever the domestic problems were in this country (yes they existed) - Just for kicks, let me ask you-what do you think we’d be doing right now if we hadn’t won WWII? (Hint- we wouldn’t be discussing world politics and calling our Fuhrer a madman).
They are the greatest generation because they knew the sacrifices they were going to have to make, and they joined up anyway. They knew it would be hell on Earth, but they did it anyway. Our freedom meant more than their comfort. That’s why. They knew the massive scale of injuries, PTSD, death…but they did it anyway. People stepped up, did what had to be done so people like you, Michelle, can go about your business and speak about anything Lou like, without having to say “Sig Heil” every five minutes and risk the horrors of Nazism. Everyone made a commitment to do all they could to help.
Never before and hopefully never again, will the entire world be in such danger. But think about this - of all the news stories, the crazy way people have been acting and the level of disrespect that people seem to have for each other. How well would we do in the event of another war?

From very early on we learned about what happened during WW 2. When I was younger it felt so far away. Also, I could not really understand the gravity of it as I wasn't really ready for it. We went through it multiple times in school and at some point it became annoying to hear it again and again. But today this hits totally different for me. As I grew older I began to see the value of each individuals life, the possibilities, the stories, experiences ... each life is its own universe. And they were killed in the millions. It takes my breath away. Last week I was at a memorial site in Vienna where over 60000 names of killed people were carved into stone. When I looked down the rows of names it felt surreal. All this for nothing. Insane.

Using orders from your commanders to commit any atrocities you like. And even one more that I cannot name, but existed-how normal people changed drastically so fast and followed Calley’s lead, burning, raping, killing, even the babies. These were guys that 5 months prior would never had considered brutality like that, but they saw it. And started doing the same things themselves even they knew right from wrong.
Was it a simple case of following orders? Or something more sinister that possibly we all have? Will something like this happen to any of us in that circumstance? The bigger travesty came when Calley spent no time in prison, lived a nice long life in Georgia with a wife and kids. I cannot help but wonder if his conscience ever bother him? Nightmares? PTSD? Depression? He never really talked about it, but when he did, he had that smirk of his that made me want to smack him.

Although Belzec was less deadly than Treblinka it was still the third deadliest camp. Between 500.000 and as many as 600.000 people were killed in Belzec during its operation with the only other deadliest camps being Auschwitz and Treblinka as over 900.000 people were killed in Treblinka and over 1.1 million people were killed in Auschwitz. Also there were far fewer survivors of Belzec then at Treblinka as while between 60 and 67 people survived Treblinka only between 2 and 7 people survived Belzec meaning that the Nazis killed almost all of the witnesses of their crimes in Belzec. This is probably one of the reasons why Belzec is not as well known as Auschwitz and Sobibor and Treblinka as very few people survived to tell the tale of what happened in Belzec.
