What a lovely little city! The owners of the historical houses in the city center can apply for a subsidy to help maintain them. I'm glad they did such a good job!

Oh, we didn't know that. But it's fair, because the houses are national heritage and they do really influence how the city will look like

@@expatfamilylive9041I agree. Living in a monument means that you can't change the front of the house and you have to ask for permission if you want to make changes to the interior. Also maintenance is more expensive. So it's only fair that the government helps a little with the cost and advise. I really like the old city centers and I'm glad that they are taken care of. Lots of beautiful buildings were demolished to make room for modern traffic or because they were in a bad state of repair. That is unlikely to happen to 'rijksmonument' buildings anymore. And if a certain area is designated a 'beschermd dorps- en stadsgezicht' everything has a level of protection against changes that could ruin it.

Harderwijk was a seatown till the Afsluitdijk was completed. It was also a Hanze-city with connections throughout the Baltic and Russia. This was one of the reasons Linneaus came from Sweden to the (former) university of Harderwijk and give the plants their Latin names.😎

You forgot to mention the Dolfinarium at Harderwijk. The children will love it! You can spent all day there.

It's really a shame that, according to RUclipsr Varlamov, Russia doesn't value their heritage very much.

We are big followers of Varlamov and we do agree with it. Also during Soviet times the government did everything to break our national heritage and to separate generation.

@@expatfamilylive9041 Since those days it hasn't improved much unfortunately, except maybe for cities like Moscow. Seems to be more about prestige than anything else. I remember an episode in which he showed a stunningly beautiful iron cast gate that was destroyed. For me that is hard to understand

It is like that anywhere except continental Europe, countries are very eager to wipe out buildings from their poor past and replace it with poch high metal and steel skyscrapers to show off their new found "wealth". It happens now even in some African countries. I am so glad we never joined that skyscraper hype.

Harderwijk is not really a gem, it is really like most Dutch towns.
Almere and Lelystad are the outliers, being the most ugly cities of the Netherlands.

@@expatfamilylive9041 It is not just my opinion, every year it is either Lelystad or Amere that "wins" the election of the ugliest town of the Netherlands.
Even ugly cities like Zoetermeer or Rotterdam don't come close.
