  • Here is my review of the AFV Club Sturmtiger to go along with the Tamiya one. This kit looks much more impressive out of the box although it too needs some love to make it accurate. It's quite a bit more expensive but for good reason. IT does lack any interior detail, but there is an upgrade available from AFV Club themselves.

    Thanks for this direct comparison review. I went through this debate about a year ago and chose the AFV Club offer, as it offers a more detailed kit. It wont be going together as easy as Tamiya would probably do, but thats why we're considered modelers. I'll skip the interior and go for some extra details as bent PE fenders and shrouds.
    Again very good video! Keep up the good work!

    That's great! I was actually looking at the Tamiya and this AFV Club kit today and trying to decide which was a better value for money. You have helped me decide that issue now! Thanks for doing this review!.

      +Sgt Bones You're very welcome. I was in that exact position myself a few months ago and pulled the trigger on the AFV Club, only to run in to that Tamiya kit at a show for very cheap. That's why i have them both.

    Just built this, nice kit. Left the springs off on the front, and the PE for the barrel fell apart after I heated it !

    Hi Adam, nice review of a great subject....when you do the rifiling on the AFV kit, wrap the PE around a similar sized drill bit and insert it into the barrel sleeve, this will help align everything.
    Looks like either kit would be nice to build, thanks for posting!

    i think the tamiya kit has the edge with regard to the price/value ratio, but it lacks some detail and afv-club brings most of those details on their kit. really hard to decide which one is better. however, none are bad so i think it is a good thing :)

      +Hamilkar Barkas I agree. I'm looking forward to the Tamiya as any details I put in it can be my own doing. Zimmerit set is in New York going through customs. So soon.

    Hi Adam. Great fan of yours. Really find your reviews etc superb. Just wanted to mention the following: You reported that the holes around the barrel should have been more in the middle than closer to the centre of the barrel as depicted in this model. I just came across this video: "Inside The Tanks: The Sturmtiger - World of Tanks" and found that they seem to have made use of both types as the example that they have in the German museum is exactly like the model from AFV.

      @AdamMann3D  6 лет назад

      Yeah, apparently every barrel for Sturmtiger was different. I know that video as well. So the number I'm not sure on, but they are supposed to be more centered in relation to the edges. As far as I know anyway.

    I gave my Tamiya one to Andrew, I might pick this one up. I am a fan of the AFVclub, Suspensions are funky but I just do them up non working

    I built the jagdpanther 2 tank destroyer kit from amusing hobbies and the detail compare to this is amazing! To the jack the jack block you need to slide in the frame its normally moulded around the wood the casting on the mantlet the tow hooks are sharp looks like there actually hooked round them hoops and the inside of the hatches are all detailed the periscopes are really smart and alot of PE for axe holder grilles fan cover and storage box clasps! Even if you didn't like the what if TD it's well worth the investment for the parts for a panther G or something! I found a zimmerit jit for.a panther G quite a good bit fitted the TD just cut some.to fit the superstructure because like the Elephant on the panther hull the MG housing was in zim resin and the rear storage boxes and hatches got it looking good iv cut and dinged up the shurzin they came as PE and the optional mesh ones for the side exhaust exits! Only used 2 panels looks better and bent up the mesh skirt but highly recommend kit! Detail is outstanding!

    Hi Adam, great review! I went through the Tam or AFV club debate about a month ago and chose the later. What attracted me was the flexibility offered by the engine deck - I'm scratching/rebuilding engine parts from an old Academy Tiger. I did get the AFV ST interior set and so far am alittle disappointed by the fidelity of the fit (particularly the resin transmission). But fear not! Oh yes, if you are thinking of doing this, the AFV ST upgrade does not include the late firewall.

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 лет назад +1

      +gjpyoung Thanks. Interesting about the updates set. I'm not a huge fan of resin interiors, so I think I would try and adapt a Rye Field interior to the kit if I was going to do it now. I'm also going to kit bash some old Academy fans and radiators in to my Tamiya build. That old Academy kit is rough, but if you have one the parts do come in handy.

    • @gjpyoung
      @gjpyoung 8 лет назад

      +Adam Mann It's my first major resin purchase - I've always been turned off by the dust factor. The Academy fans, radiators and fuel tanks are all useable and easily adaptable. The firewall alittle more trouble but faster than scratching one. The engine is the wrong type, so it's adapting the old and simple Tamiya engine maintenance shell!

    I was asuming that the 1:48 was a up or down scaled vertion but I can now see that they are totally different, if you see it cheap you shuld pick it up, its a really nice kit, and even in 1:48 is quite big. I read Michaels comment wich confused me about the price I thought the Tamiya cost more, Anyway 2 kits that can be made into very nice models. Thank you for sharing

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 лет назад

      +WarWarNeverChanges I hadn't seen how the 1:48 was made. This and the Tamiya both seem to be good, but this seems to have the edge in a few areas.

    Yeh you'll need your exhaust shrouds from your tiger q sprue in this kit for the sturmtiger the difference in RFM sturmtiger and ARV is crazy different!

    Strange how the gas vent holes are so close to the inside of the barrel. I guess the PE rifling *might* correct for some of that. But unless it's thicker than I imagine it is, not enough. Hardy souls perhaps could fill the existing ones and re-drill. That might be next to impossible, but that wrong detail would bug me.

  • @EMTBAFV
    @EMTBAFV 4 года назад

    I just checked my RFM structure for them welded on hooks they put on afterwards mine done have any indentation holes for the hooks just a slight outline it looks heck of alot better the PE would just sit in the slight lines that they put on have alook at the difference online mate but 65 bucks you would expect it to be bitty better haha!

    I've just finished building this kit, and while it's a good quality kit, there are a few things that were quite frustrating. Firstly step 19 has a part not labelled, the front 'window directly to the right of the barrel doesn't have a piece to fit it so it just ends up being an open box, no slit visor, no nothing. Some of the parts were just far too brittle so that by the time I got them out of the box they were snapped; like the crane top piece, the frame for the engine deck plus a few others.
    Putting the Zimmerit on was np picnic either. The area's covered are so small it's hard to work out whether to put the pieces on first or last...
    Additionally, there are quite a few parts that look like they belong on a regular Panzer VI. A whole sprue and a bit.
    I also purchased the 38cm ammo from Royal which turned out to be a disaster as they had lumps of plastic weirdly stuck to the rockets...
    Overall this was the second hardest, most frustrating build for me and I'm onto my 15th major piece, being modelling for 15 years. The hardest was a Bronco 1/35 Panzerwerfer SWS Zehnling with the full interior: that nearly had me slit my wrists.

      Interesting to hear, i still haven't built this or any AFV club kit. The brittle plastic doesn't surprise me, it feels like it would be. Did you use kit tracks? Did it turn out ok? I'd love to see a video of the thing.

      Hi, that "open box" that you refer to is actually correct. The Tamiya kit looks the same and photos of the original as well. The problem is that the hull comes with an outline over that "open box" that makes it look as if a part should be placed over it, but it is correct in that way.

      @@AdamMann3D Just a quick Heads up. I am busy building the AFV Stuka zu Fuss kit at the moment. My first AFV kit. The instructions are unclear at times and do not show how the finished step should look. Fortunately there are many photos online and one can figure it out that way. All I can recommend is for you to use the Revell glue that Hamilkar gave you as you may find yourself having to remove a part again. The order of the also building does not always make sense. For example they wanted the bottom and top half glued together and thereafter they want the benches placed into the interior. It was much easier putting the benches in before glueing the halves together. However, on the plus side, the detail is amazing.

    this AFV club kit looks nice. tons of detail...wow ! the PE rifeling to bend around and fit into the barrel has me scared though. i'm not really a pro with PE parts yet,so i try not to tackle anything too fiddely. i'll probably just go with the tamiya kit. thanks for the interesting and informative videos on both of these kits ! greatly appreciated ! :)

    I have the RFM sturmtiger I bought the other day to do after bergepanther I would double check the sprue in the Arv club kit bud I have a couple of churchill's sitting there with missing sprues! There my first from them too and detail is brilliant but can't start them as first call it is fenders and rivets what's missing! My hobby shop gave is the ARV brass rivits to get it started till they replace the sprues bit the lockdown it's not important so was a waste of 120 quid really! So just double check anything from arv club mate! Amd the deep wadding kit is missing out the Dappie raid churchill arc club kit of mine the only reason I bought that bloody version! Not happy with ARV just now so just a heads up to anyone in modeling who has ARV in stashed check your sprues!
