Ferreting in the Yorkshire Dales

  • Each year, around the time of the clock change, I find myself, like a moth to the flame, making a pilgrimage, subliminally drawn to the warrens on those Yorkshire hills - and this year was no exception. Several hundred miles later we concluded our journey by driving through the villages that collectively make up the Dales. If this area were twinned with an animal instead of a town, it would undoubtedly be twinned with the rabbit.
Indeed, this was the reason for our visit: walking out with good friends - Sooty, Torchie and Richard - their dogs and a boxful of ferrets in search of our very own rabbits while keeping the onus on quality and quantity.

Now I'm really nostalgic. Most of my rabbiting was in hedge row bottoms. Great video.

most people I know want to visit England for the touristy stuff, London, shopping, or visiting historical sights (which i really wouldn't mind. i love history almost as much as i love breathing) but this is really what I would want to do if I ever found myself in the UK...Ever since I made friends with some sportsman from England I've always been slightly jealous. this looks so much more fun and productive. Our rabbits aren't the same as yours(in fact i think they are actually a small variety of hare.) There are too many trees and undergrowth for lurchers to see properly and ferrets are considered cute loveable pets and are very expensive (which brings us back to the fact that our rabbits do not burrow.) The closest I got was when someone gave me a ferret. At the time we had mice trying to move in to escape winter. She would occasionally crawl out from beneath furniture carrying a mouse until there weren't anymore. better at catching them than any house cat.

Emily Pollifax It is always nice to hear the views of those that unfortunately cannot access those spots we have the privilege of hunting at and generally appreciating their splendour.

Great video, viewing from Orlando, Florida, USA. I love watching the ferreting though have never participated. I am older gent...up older beyond that kind of activity. ALthough I wouldn't mind an opportunity to sit and watch.....Your dog "Dan" is quite the sporter of a dog. WOW...quick on his feet...alert to the max and focused. Very well trained and fun to watch him in action. I enjoyed EVERYTHING about this video....I INCLUDE everyone and the valued well trained animals involved. Ferrets and dogs. Very well edited and presented. Thanks guys, looking forward perhaps for more from your group of friends
    Thanks for posting.
New viewing buddy from the Sunshine State, FLorida, USA.

That was good of dan, at 5:27mins he knows rabbit is about to bolt but instead rushing into the hole. He keeps his body low and holds back for the rabbit to purse. very clever

Thank you for sharing the video .
We have rabbits in Morocco but they do not dig holes underground like yours do .but they look the same specimen .
An English writer visited Morocco in 1880's and in his book called The Land of an African Sultan he talked about hunting rabbits with a rifle and dogs all over morocco.
These are very interesting traditions and life skils that go back to immemorial times .
    Best regards

Great dog, good rabbiters, not trying to cover too much ground at a time and sensible use of added music, pleasantly unobtrusive. Col, NZ.
