    "Or maybe you dont have the courage". Well we did. It took years and now our vintage steam engines roll along the 10 miles with 5 coaches behind. If you are the fireman, as I was, and you have 200 lbs per sq in of pressure and a full boiler there's really nothing quite like it. Good luck !

    If you are going to continue with a battery powered chainsaw - stock up on batteries and chains - batteries don't last that long and every time the chain hits ballast you have destroyed its sharpening.

    I have cleared a bunch of pasture in rocky, gravely areas and I started using a cordless DeWalt 'sawzall' with cheap brush blades for the smaller stuff (I use a Husqvarna Brushcutter on the smaller stuff away from rocks and gravel). The blades last a long time cutting in the dirt, and can even cut below the surface. When they finally get dull just throw them away. Another tip: Bring some Tordon with you and squirt some on each thing you cut right after you cut it -- otherwise you will soon be fighting the same battle. Use a chainsaw on the bigger stuff above the ground. Good luck!

    Wonderful video, and thanks for saving some more railroading history!
    I would love to run my own railroad for some tourism around my area, because businesses/local towns are dying here... there are very few rail exhibits/museums in Illinois (or nearby) that I know of besides the ILRM in the north near Chicago, and NMOT in Missouri (especially organizations that have a good amount of track, or running equipment).
    There’s a line owned by Canadian National that’s an ex-Illinois Central coal mine line, that stretches for about 30 miles (plenty long) and is located along the interstate (perfect for grabbing possible interest). Problem is that, it is still used for an electrical plant halfway up the line, but the southern portion is entirely abandoned, including the mine site - only time will tell how long that plant is open for. This is obviously a problem, and of course, being a large corporation as such, it’s VERY doubtful that they’d ever let it go, whether it be CN or the plant.
    It could just be me having crazy ideas - because the possibility is almost none existent - or it could somehow work...

    I just found your channel and thoroughly enjoyed the first episode. It brought back some interesting memories from 15 years ago when a group of us tried to lease a rail-banked, former AT&SF line from our state's DOT. While we were waiting for them to make a decision about our offer, they allowed us to start clearing a portion of the heavily overgrown ROW. It was hard work but very satisfying. They ended up refusing to consider our lease offer and then turned around and sold the line for scrap. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. I wish you and the East Terminal Railway every success and thank you for taking the time and going to the effort to share your adventure with us!

    I admire what your trying to do, invest in a good gas chains saw, much faster, build a cart to move on the rail to carry supplies. Rent a bobcat with a brush hog will clean up the top above the rails and clear the rite of way. Let the machine do the work, there are smaller rotary cutters that can cut stumps down to the ties. That are hand pushed. Good Luck.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 3 года назад

      @@allanelder2711 There's basically no such thing as a sound business plan for a short line in the UK. Freight trains in the UK exclusively take a whole train's worth of the same thingfrom point A to point B. There are no facilities for dealing with single wagon-loads of freight, except for packing that freight into a container, trucking it to the nearest container terminal and getting it on a train that way. Unless you have something like a very large quarry or cement works, direct rail freight is a total non-starter.

It is way harder then it looks... There will be trouble lurking under each branch that you remove! You keep mentioning railcar storage, keep in mind the industry standard has changed since that particular section of rail last saw service. Cars have gotten bigger and heavier, 90lb rail is not going to handle 300,000lb cars...
