WHY IS THIS BAITCASTER SO BIG???? | Penn Fathom 400 Low Profile Baitcasting Reel Review

- In this video I breakdown the features on the Penn Fathom 400llp, one of the largest low profile baitcasting reels on the market, competing with the Daiwa Lexa 400 and Shimano TranX 400. After looking at the design I take a moment to talk about the times you would want or need a baitcaster like it, such as musky or pike fishing, throwing big swimbaits or Alabama Rigs for bass, tarpon, big snook, bull reds, cobia, slow pitch jigging for grouper or snapper and more! It's not my best work, but hopefully y'all can pick up a thing or two from this video!

One huge advantage of the 400 size is it has a synchronised levelwind, so everything stays in line as a fish pulls drag, far smoother. Love my 400
Good point! I forgot to mention that. Thank you! Glad you like yours.
Great info! Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
got mine for 60 bucks at Academy sports because it was miss labeled awesome bait caster
DANG! That's a STEAL
Tranx is pronounced like Traynks. Rhymes with thanks.
Thanks for your thoughts. Been looking at this. Mostly fish piers for Tarpon and Kings. I own 2 tranx 400s and a Okuma Komodo SS. So fun fighting big fish on a baitcaster.
Thanks! I've never heard it pronounced that way before. Makes sense. I appreciate the encouraging comment!
FATHOM blows Tranx and Komodo out of the water in every category! There's no comparison!
@@wheels.and.wrenches Never fished one before. But I’m definitely interested in seeing for myself. Even if I have to buy one to do it. 😂
Mine o my came with one handle type and not the double handle. Sucks.
I use it for Red fish
Nice! The 400 size?
I’m kind of wondering what it will be like surf casting? I’m probably gonna get one and put it on a 10ft surf rod for light surf stuff.
@@llambet I'm sure it would work great for that! I have it on an 8' swimbait rod and it casts forever just with that. Very easy to set the control and be able to just launch a bait and not thinking about it
i use mine to catch freshwater faltheads and big blues
That's a great choice for that. What's your biggest cat?
@@emeraldtidesoutdoors 74.4 blue cat 💪🏻
@@SirMissAlot859Holy crap! That's huge. I've never done any fishing for big cats before, just the random channels you catch when bass fishing. What state do you fish in?
i fish in KY for the most but sometimes i go to other states like OH or TN

@@SirMissAlot859 That's awesome
You're asking why a 400 size reel is big? 😂😂😂 Its a muskie reel and saltwater! Wow
Low profile reels for saltwater and muskies are fairly new, a lot of people haven't actually seen them yet.
Say, YT, YFT and/or BFT. Now your talkin'!
Oh yeah!
I bet that reel would be great for snakeheads.
Might a bit heavy, but if you want to get them in quick it would be sweet
@@emeraldtidesoutdoors Reel them in quick and move on to the next cast is the whole point. 😁It would be use more for saltwater fishing. But here in MD Eastern Shore some of the guys I work with that do a lot freshwater fishing had caught close to dragon status size snakefish. And I hear they are aggressive, and they are great for fish tacos. That is what I would call "One Reel To Rule Them All".
This one is almost identical to the 3rd generation of Abu Garcia Revo toro beast 60. I have both of them. Cannot tell the differences. BTW, penn is cheaper on European market.
Interesting. Not surprising since both companies are owned by Pure Fishing now. I would imagine the Penn probably has more corrosion resistant components
