No beating the sound of music this year for director and picture! Film still holds up 48 years later.

Great director. Creator of masterpieces.
Capable? Excuse me: although Wyler was superlative and Lean a master with the wide screen after doing quite well earlier with more intimate subjects, Wise had a range and breadth in his career that puts him ahead of them all. He mastered sci-fi, mystery, sports films, message pictures, musicals, melodramas, stark dramas, racially-themed stories, low-key intimate personal dramas, horror, and noirs. This award went to the right man.

Shirley looked spectacular, and she said to the equally radiant Julie Andrews, "I love your dress!". No question for me: THE SOUND OF MUSIC all the way. Still wish Julie had managed the consecutive best actress wins.
Oh I agree. Julie Andrews should have won for The Sound of Music as well. To me, it was the best movie that she ever made! She was just fantastic in it!
I met Robert wise in person, he had a condo in here in NY. He was a very nice guy.. I was working as a nanny for some of his friends who lived in the building. We called him Norman then.
It's a shame that Christopher Plumner had to wait nearly 50 years to get his first Oscar. He should have been nominated for The Sound of Music. He was good in that movie.
I think The Sound of Music has stood the test of time. It's still a real delight to watch. Sometimes that's asking enough of a film. Doctor Zhivago really feels bloated to me when I watch it today and I love David Lean.
The Sound of Music is a timeless classic! My grandmother took me to see it on my eighth birthday; which was of course, back in 1965.

Some tough competition this year in the director's seat!
First of all, I saw some reasoning with this director already won one, two, three Oscars. That does not say anything about the directing. I agree with the academy on this tough choice. Wise has got it all, the commercial success is one of the results from that. It is because the movie stayed away from being to oversentimental, and Julie Andrews made it so real, supported by the fabulous Christopher Plummer.
It was a superb choice and Wise's finest hour as a director. DARLING a wonderfully acted *masterpiece*?
Woman in the Dunes is such an underrated film
Mr. Wise was off in Hong Kong directing Steve McQueen in The Sand Pebbles.

Wow what a clip in such fabulous color and what classy outfits
Television largely went to color in late 1965. So this (in 1966) was the first Oscar ceremony to be broadcast in color. If someone was wearing Shirley Maclaine's dress nowadays, the cameras would reduce the sparkle effect automatically. But color TV was in its infancy, so her sparkles really SPARKLED! Too much, IMHO. They're distracting and her dress looks like it was battery operated. Having said that, Robert Wise was deserving of the Directing Oscar. This was the year of the battle of the Julies (Andrews and Christie) for Best Actress (Christie won). But Sound of Music won Best Picture as well, and Julie Andrews was a good sport about it (exulting the success of the film and being relieved not to get Best Actress again).

I think ABC were using the RCA orthicon-tube colour cameras NBC would have used at the time - the following year they'd started using the cameras that resulted in those "light trails".

I kind of like the sparkles actually -- I guess because we don't usually see a dress sparkle like that.

The glamourous Shirley ain't so glamourous after a reading of her daughter Sachi's book.
If it weren't for the different neckline, I'd swear that Ms. MacLaine is wearing the same Edith Head gown she wore in the fashion show segment of WHAT A WAY TO GO; in the film it showed a deep-v neckline and plenty of 'decolletage.'
Took me a while to find out that West Side Story & Sound of Music had the same director
He won the Best Director Oscar for both films, which also won Best Picture.

Actually, it is Peggy Wood, who was a supporting actress nominee for THE SOUND OF MUSIC.
Shurley MacLaine wore that dress also in an Oscar ceremony many years later. I cannot remember the year but I have watched the video.
I’m watching his directed, “Run Silent, Run Deep,” starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.
I was divided between Robert Wise for The Sound of Music and David Lean for Doctor Zhivago.

Yes he was. He was over in Hong Kong filming The Sand Pebbles. That's why Julie Andrews and Associate Producer Saul Chaplin accepted his two Oscars on his behalf.

Robert Wise was a capable director who trained with Orson Welles and had co-directed West Side Story in 61 with Jerome Robbins as well as The Day The Earth Stood Still; he wasn't in the same league artistically with David Lean or William Wyler or John Schlesinger. However, Sound Of Music was a tremendous commercial success and may have saved 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy. Didn't Wise re-edit Welles' The Magnificent Ambersons at the request of RKO Studios; the footage was ultimately lost.

Interesting that William Wyler was nominated for THE COLLECTOR. He'd originally been hired to direct THE SOUND OF MUSIC and he had a hand in casting Julie Andrews, but his heart was never in it, and when THE COLLECTOR became available he asked to be released from his contract and was replaced with Robert Wise, who, as you see here, won for Director instead.
While it is true that Wyler was originally slated to direct THE SOUND OF MUSIC, he had nothing whatsoever to do with casting Julie Andrews. That was all Robert Wise and Saul Chaplin. They had asked Walt Disney to view footage of the still unreleased MARY POPPINS and, after seeing the footage Disney was only too pleased to screen for them, they went out and offered her the film.
Unfortunately, Robert Wise wasn't there that night. He was busy filming The Sand Pebbles over Hong Kong with Steve McQueen.
The Sand Pebbles was released on December 21. It was nominated for the Best Picture award, but unfortunately, it lost the award to A Man For All Seasons.
I thought I was in Kansas, watching the Wizard of Oz.

I was looking for this comment. Definitely deserved the oscar. Woman in the Dunes is the most absorbing film I've ever seen.
I'd have voted Schlesinger for "DARLING". Lean already has 2, Wyler has 3, Wise made the sentimental, and Teshighara has the "lucky to be nominated" role. But props to Teshighara-san - his film is so surreal and fucked-up, it's spellbinding. If the Academy voted for him, awesome but still kind of telling since they had yet to nominate the far superior Kurosawa and didn't even vote Fellini for "8 1/2" from '63 (the one foreign effort that should have won at this point).

It was a silk wool kimono dress designed for her by Dorothy Jeakins, who won the first Oscar ever given out for costume design, had won the previous year for NIGHT OF THE IGUANA (the same night Julie Andrews won Best Actress for MARY POPPINS and wearing a buttercup yellow silk chiffon gown designed by Dorothy Jeakins), was nominated that same evening for THE SOUND OF MUSIC and would be nominated the following year for HAWAII. Yeah, but to someone like you ... it was a bathrobe.
What a lousy choice! Wyler already had three (this was his last of 12 nominations, still the record), Lean had won twice and Wise four years earlier. The Japanese film was remarkably original. But the brilliant John Schlesinger created a frank, modern, wonderfully acted masterpiece. Sound of Music, an enormous hot with a superb score, was already old fashioned and not one of Mr Wise's best directing efforts, IMHO. Happily the Academy honored John Schlesinger a few years later (Midnight Cowboy),
The Collector should have been a best picture nominee and Wyler deserve an Oscar for direction.
Such a boring set of nominees. I sort of have given it to Lean, but having already won for something similar earlier, I guess... I dunno.
