there is more to the video then the actual lyrics. you see how chaotic it is in the background but most people watching this are distracted by the dance moves that you so easily forget he just shot a man in the head. its a metaphor on how we as a society are so easily distracted by new dance fads, Kanye , or cheating scandals that we forget about these real dire issues that are happening to our people.
Basicaly he's saying people in postions of influence are fueling the anarchy , While they're ignoring the issues they help create !!! With celebs trying to dance and stay lit promoting mindless forms of media that glamorizes violence , drugs etc . Not thinking about how it destorys the moral compass of society ( With the backing music saying get your money black man ) The final scene shows him dancing on the car with nobody to be seen . As everyone is dead . Showing a narrow prospective of him not caring aslong as it's lit . Following on to eventually it'll all come back on you '' No running away '' !!! As information and media changes peoples perceptions ( As your mentality grows from your envoirment ) !!!
CaptainFracture -- You'd think so but a lot of these reaction videos and comments show that not all people realize it and allow the message to fly straight over their heads.
Dank Brax They are clueless. I watched the video several times with the lyrics in front of me. Very powerful message being put across. Artistic perfection. ANY parody, remake or comedic version of this would be a disrespectful insult.
you react to this video's made me think maybe that is what Donald Glover was trying to show: both times you were pretty shook by the graphic violence, but then you were immediately distracted by the dancing and funny things he was doing
I love watching reaction videos to this video because it proves his point so well…. When the choir gets shot, people are like Oh Damn… and mood changes, but then 30 seconds later, you forget about that and are dancing along with him like it didn’t happen…. Not just you guys, but everyone… that’s the point he’s trying to make. All the dancing and TikTok’s distract from the tragedies going on…
Str1ker3 Wisen and how would you know that because the first time I watched it I understood what he was saying and then I kept on watching it over and over and I got new things 😊
I think him not wearing a shirt represents the objectification of black men as sex objects. At 5:51 in your video, where he stands there like a real man, showing his strength with his back to the camera, flexing his back, he looks like a real man just ever so briefly, his whole vibe brought me to tears, then when the camera comes to face him, he slips into a non-threatening pose, almost a caricature - gambino is a very talented artist
Y'all didn't see the person did suicide in 5:58 . Gambino distracted you with his dancing this is what he's basically saying. Gambino is basically saying that were so focus on dancing, trends, and every thing that were forgetting about what's happening around us like terrorism suicide and shooting and more.
I’m a 43-year old Caucasian man. I’m so thankful Gambino put this video out. We can all talk about this mess going on in America. We all need to wake up, and realize - we’re all in this together. Much love, young men.
don't analyze the lyrics. keep watching the video. the lyrics is a mockery of the music in Current day. the man that got shot in the beginning is a representation of innocence, and sudden danger, or loss of life. The kids dancing. A distraction. Look at the background, in all the dance scenes. violence, protests. The church scene, the church shooting that occurred not long ago 10 people shot. 9 died 1 injured. the cloths he wrapped the guns in representing the confining cops and murderers do to weaponry, nearly making them seem worth more than a black mans life.
His video is so accurate because there are so many things going on in the background. All of these shootings and the police brutality but all people focus on are these dances, the music, the entertainment industry. These distractions keep people from paying attention to what’s really going on. And the fact that everyone ran when the black man was unarmed (when Childish Gambino held up the fake gun) shows just how terrified and frightened people are of black men even though they aren’t posing a threat. Deep messages in this video and I’m sure that I haven’t even caught them all.
T. Elizabeth Harris *Childish Gambino holding a fake gun was actually a reference to Florida High School shooting that occurred on Valentines Day and there was an accurate 17 second pause during the scene to honor the 17 people who got shot by the 19-year-old Nicolas Cruz.*
Your reaction is the epitome of what Donald is talking about. You are distracted by the dancing and fail to recognize what is going on behind everything. Congrats. Not.
allenwright89 ... not really it's just facts... they are looking at the foreground.. sometimes you have to look pass what they are putting in YOUR face.. and look at the whole picture... they are dancing... Bojangling.. and you missing everything that's going on the background.. and that's how it is in real life.. they are changing the history..
Testament to (one of) the message(s) of the video is the fact that in ALL the reaction videos, even after each shooting, the viewers still dance along to the music. We are ALL distracted.
HERE'S WHAT SO MANY PEOPLE MISS: 1) He is in the video, but hidden behind the pillar 2) Guitarist looks like Treyvon Martins father 3) Glover isn't wearing a shirt. Proud of his black skin? Perhaps. In a world of bleachers. 4) The double gold chain. Something to do with America's history. 5) His pants - is that the pants of the North, or the Confederate South? 6) The big-eyes look is Uncle Ruckus 7) Black on black crime. Prosperity preaching that isn't the Gospel at all. 14) Gambino comes in happy, but then realizes that what he entered for is NOT what they are singing about, and his expression changes from joy to disappointment as if he realizes that "this Church is no benefit to me at all" … and pulls the trigger. Reminds me of something: [Mat 5:13 KJV] 13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. True. If salt looses its flavor, what good is it? It is thrown in the trash. The influence of the American Church is in a pitiful state because of the Godless preaching and the hyocrites and toleration within. The salt has lost its flavor! 15) DONALD GLOVER DOES NOT HAVE TATTOOS! No one reviewing his videos has even touched this fact. So, WHAT IS THAT TAT ON HIS INNER ARM? WHAT DOES IT SAY? I tried to pause to read it, but it can't get a clear picture. But I looked it up, and Glover does NOT have tattoos, so that tat on his inner arm must mean something. Everyone who is reviewing the vids seem to miss it. Y'all are so used to seeing tats, that you don't even notice it, but I notice, and I looked up whether or not he has tats in real life, and he doesn't, so that tat is FAKE, and it must say/mean something. 16) He over-extenuates "I'm so pretty" that its causing me to wonder if he's dealing with the vanity of a female … or the flame of a HOMOSEXUAL, GENDER-CONFUSED MALE. Cause the "men" tend to over do it more than the women - they act worst! 17) Kids on cellphones, not adults. They are the ones growing into this new technology, always on some device instead of outside playing like we used to. And the scarfs over their mouths probably represents "seeing evil by not saying evil". Stupid people wil record you getting hurt, but don't even think to put their stupid phones down and get you HELP! All the idiots do is say "worldstar." Back in the day, we'd beak up a fight, or help the person who got hurt without thinking about it. 18) Police car - but violence all around. Powerless to stop the NATION when it get's to the point of National Civil Unrest … and I believe this country is heading that direction. 19) Rider on a white horse is NOT death, contrary to the opinions of people . The rider of the white horse is GODLESS RELIGIOUSITY. There are a lot of religious nuts in the planet who talk about God like they are a #1 fan, but they are NOT true followers and they do NOT obey/serve Him. The FIRST rider is the white horse. The LAST rider is Death, and he is on a BLACK horse, not a white one. So, all the people who review it, saying that it's death, they are ALL wrong. 11) No idea what he's talking about, but I do know that contraband and hundred bands point to DRUGS. Then he lights a joint/spliff. Represents the drug us in America, possibly the legalization of marijuana. 12) The 17 seconds or silence are the 17 kids who were killed in the shooting. And observe the face of the little boy before he rand off - he was terrified. 13) No idea what the old cars represent. There isn't a single modern car in the shot. 14) Terrified Glover running from white people. That's too loaded to even guess.
My take on the last scene: The whole song has a message of black entertainment being a commodity consumed by people who don't really care about black people (Jim Crow pose in the first shooting; the African dance right before the church scene). The last scene, he's wearing gold chains, being chased by mostly white people, but some black people too. The message there, I think (or at least one of them), is that, like it has been for a very, very long time, black art is valued by America but black people are not. In this case, he's an escaped slave, wearing a gold chain. Why? Because he's not literally a slave, but he's a slave to a system that still values him as a commodity. "Black man get your money." In this last scene, the artist himself is running. He's running because he knows he's a commodity to the people who are making him rich (giving him the gold chain). He's running because he is feeding the very system that systematically oppresses his own people. He's "getting his money," and he feels conflicted because (a) what choice does he have? and (b) he's still feeding that system. But it's more than the artist. It's the people who support the artists even though this system is another form of control. On the other side of the coin, you have the white (and other non-black) people, who are mindlessly chasing the black ARTIST, who don't give two shits about the black people dying in the background, but are transfixed with the culture and art that black people have produced. They're chasing the commodity that they value, yet the entire time they've been oblivious to the death and horror. That's just one. One single message in this video. There is so much more. But that's what I read from the final scene. And I'm sure there is even more to it than this.
Crazy they didn't notice all the pandemonium in the background. That was one of the points he was trying to make in the video. While all this fuckery is going on, most people only noticed his dancing. The media keeps you distracted like that. He's also slave-ish looking, no shirt the pants even look kinda like slave-ish. Maybe trying to represent how he/we shouldn't want to remain slaves to the media. If you notice at the end, the visuals remind you of slaves being chased through the woods. Except, he's being chased by what looks like fans and paparazzi etc... There are many messages going on. Even his facial expressions kind of look crazy at times. Like he's low-key losing it, but trying to hide it with dancing etc... Yet, it slips through here and there.
the dancing was a distraction, hes sayin blk people doing ever thing but worryin bout the right things. DONT GET DISTRACTED IS THE MESSAGE,,, REACT TO MIC JENKINS-- Martyrs official video
Yeah and cultural appropriation. It’s not just about the distraction. It also highlights how white supremacy picks at black culture and decides what they like and don’t like based on what sells almost as if it’s a trend.. all while killing black people on a daily with federal officers who are meant to be of the law...that’s why he continues to dance.. because it’s what’s accepted by America, it’s what’s selling and making big money. That’s why he gets the kids to copy him dancing. That’s why he says ‘I’m so pretty’ in his gucci, vibing on a sound similar to migos and Fetty in the back (think he even references them) and the men sitting up high looking down is mirroring a shot from one of asap rocky’s earlier videos, it’s symbolism for consumerism and cultural appropriation. ‘Black man get your money’ is America saying black man make me money. The messages run deep in this video, it’s like a wake up call to the upcoming generation, it’s a fuckin masterpiece from Gambino.
curt thomas You are right at some points. I’m not a racist person but gangs in America are sometimes run by blk men trying to get that “money”. The kids are dancing while there is a riot going on in the background, him saying he has to carry a gun cause of criminals in his streets, the beautiful music behind black culture is being destroyed by the trap and gang music in our world today.
bro before u got about gangs,do ur research an how gangs started an how they turned into something different. the government locked all the ogs up back in the day when they was about empowering the youth. the dancing resprestation true living everyday life just turning up while chaos is going on. Hes not talking about just blk crminals hes talkin about lots of things going on an were sleep
Whoa man you guys..... I went to Europe and asked a few people what they thought of Americans and the common theme was they act all friendly like your best friend but aren't sincre. They're fake. And you guys just picked up on that. Wow.
Solovino Juntoseva Americans are the most genuinely in-genuine people you could meet, lol gotta watch out for it. But It's honestly hard to find a TRUE friend in any country.
Shit guys, this video went so far over your heads. Like, 'the point' drove to a local airport, flew over you at 20,000ft, landed at Cape Canaveral, took a shuttle into space and did a few low Earth orbits, landed, flew a plane back over the top of you, went home, had a beer, and chilled in front of the telly.........and none of you even had a clue that you'd missed 'the point' and had no idea it had even gone over your heads numerous times.
When he does the belly role dance in the beginning. He has one eye wide open. That would be the uncle rufus from the show "The Boondocks" who was an uncle tom in the animated cartoon.
Jaelle Moon it's there first time watching it.. Pretty sure everyone focused on Gambino during their first watch. That's part of the point of the video.. That the pubic doesn't notice what's going on behind the scenes.
You have to watch it again and focus on the background. His whole point was we let other things divert our attention and don't pay attention to what's really going on around us!
The artist, the song, the video are Iconic! He drops so many nuggets of truth. Did any of y'all catch that Treyvon Martin's dad was the brother in the beginning of the video that sits down in the chair and starts playing the guitar only to be shot in the head? Epic!
This video depicts a lot of harsh reality. When he first shots the guy in the head then gives that men the gun. It shows that gun are treated with more respect than human lives: the gun is carried off carefully by a nicely-dressed man, whereas the corpse is dragged off and immediately disregarded. The way he stands when he shots that man, his posture and the way he stands looks Jim Crow drawing signifying the Jim Crow era which legally enforced racial segregation in the South minstrel shows and blackface were not uncommon. Here, some have drawn parallels between Gambino’s movements and that of an old Jim Crow poster. The growing threat of terrorism is depicted in the church, while the choir sings about getting money. Highlighting how religion encourages the pursuit of a materialistic lifestyles. Or it’s about America’s history of shooting up black churches. When the dancing begins, it’s a distraction because there’s rioting in the background. The world is so eager to adopt black culture, Blocboy JB’s dance, whilst ignoring the racial injustices they face. The white horse lurking in the background is a reference to the horsemen of the apocalypse in the book of revelations who spread death, but we’re too distracted by the dancing and getting “hunnid bands, hunnid bands, hunnid bands”. The final scene shows Donald being chased by white people, suggesting the intrusion of white supremacy into the life of a black man. This clip has undertones of the sunken place in “Get Out”. Also, the lighting a joint while jumping on an empty car and the cars going back in date to the 80s Regan Era, all empty, and how that all correlates to the false drug war and how many people of color aren't home because if it?
I guess Donald Glover succeed the point of the video is that Americans get distracted to easy from problems in the background such mass shootings and gun violence in the black community ,if you just interested in his dancing then you must re watch the video (his dancing from the character Jim Crow).
This song speaks of inadequate societies, racism, massacres in churches, and many more such as police shooting unarmed people. But everything is obscured by dancing and singing.
I only picked up the obvious stuff though like the charleston church shooting, your cell phone is a tool use it, the police brutality that was going on in the background, the mocking of today's hip hop, the kids that were dancing with him the whole time were his fans or admirers and the self destructiveness going on in the community. There was so much to unpack The Jim Crow pose was in the beginning when he was shooting the guy in the head. That flew over my head. I had no idea the whole point of the video was to keep u focused on him and not what's going on in the background cause that's what America is trained to do.
I get the impression that the middle guy thinks Childish is "bragging" about how guns is America. The video is actually the complete opposite. He's portraying a caricature of American society. The dancing is meant to be a distraction from what's really going on (the background of the video). The part with the weed I personally believe shows everyone takes off running when they "think" the black man is reaching for a gun when in fact he's reaching for a joint, perhaps the most nonviolent thing a person can do (getting high makes you lazy and laugh a lot, it doesn't make you violent).
Im just now seeing this video because it is a reaction video to my music. I wrote and made this song and gave it to childish Gambino. This is a DISS record. When I wrote this 23 is my number 2,3. I was 22 going on 23 when I wrote this. Y'all have 23 on y'all wall in this video, that's a blessing

glad you guys are lookin into it and asking questions :)
You guys peep sza sitting on the car at the end?😂
Lauren Hughes didn’t notice that good looking!
2:53 No Michael Jackson there, just Minstrel Show/Jim Crow dance

I’m Indian but this song just sums up to black people in america how they get treated...😒
Childish Gambino's whole video spoke too loud.
Chrisshae Buford yet people still covers their ears and blindly believe on BS.
Right guy on middle is Disturbed to the shooting but still vibing like my friends didn't get that message ama just go with da vibe
Y’all need to watch the news man😂😂😂
the dancing was a distraction, hes sayin blk people doing ever thing but worryin bout the right things.
Who knew skin color would make u think in a xertain way
curt thomas You are right at some points.
Hes not talking about just blk crminals hes talkin about lots of things going on an were sleep
curt thomas Thank you for elaborating on what you think. I can agree.
This is America
Wow, the whole message went right over your heads. Not only is the video filled with irony but so is your reaction.
Actually, "This Is NOT America, was song in an old movie, "The Falcon And The Snowman", sung by David Bowie
Yall did exactly what he was trying to talk about you paid more attention to the dancing then the underlying message
Whoa man you guys..... I went to Europe and asked a few people what they thought of Americans and the common theme was they act all friendly like your best friend but aren't sincre. They're fake. And you guys just picked up on that. Wow.
Solovino Juntoseva true
Wasn’t the thriller man it’s Jim Crow , learn your history
MW4 KK 28x
LOL no one cares about that stuff anymore or at least don't want to
Agreed
4:04 "Why you look like that nigga"...hahaha I lost it! :)
Love y'all.❤️❤️ Great reaction video.
When he does the belly role dance in the beginning. He has one eye wide open. That would be the uncle rufus from the show "The Boondocks" who was an uncle tom in the animated cartoon.
Y'all should focus n the background not only the dancing
Jaelle Moon it's there first time watching it.. Pretty sure everyone focused on Gambino during their first watch. That's part of the point of the video.. That the pubic doesn't notice what's going on behind the scenes.
Sally Markins
I didn't,lol I was looking at the background
The dude in the dark blue is the type of person that can’t take anything serious
I thought the Guy with the blue top on with the white print on the front I thought he was a little kid😊 he have a baby face.
"We on PornHub."
I died. :D
When he said y u smiling N Shit 😂😂😂😂😂
All these brothers are high as fuck...it’s as if they all simultaneously took a big hit on their spliffs and started recording 😂😂😂
You have to watch it again and focus on the background. His whole point was we let other things divert our attention and don't pay attention to what's really going on around us!
Ya didnt peep 21 savage, blockboy, young thug, and offset doing the ad libs
This is 400 years of history in 4 minutes, gentlemen.... great reaction, guys
y’all catch jordan peel at the beginning of the choir?
4:54 it sounds like an F1 race
Now watch just the BACKGROUND ... I love how some of your faces changed by the end....
Dude in the black shirt with the chain on look like BlastHisAss from 600
The artist, the song, the video are Iconic!
There heads were all knowing at the same time.😂
This is my favorite reaction of them all..lol!!
This is about the violence they are distracting us from like you guys focusing on his dancing instead of the chaos
But everything is obscured by dancing and singing.
yeaaaaaa niggaaaaa
and if I say it from afar because they do not hit me here
I only picked up the obvious stuff though like the charleston church shooting, your cell phone is a tool use it, the police brutality that was going on in the background, the mocking of today's hip hop, the kids that were dancing with him the whole time were his fans or admirers and the self destructiveness going on in the community. There was so much to unpack The Jim Crow pose was in the beginning when he was shooting the guy in the head. That flew over my head. I had no idea the whole point of the video was to keep u focused on him and not what's going on in the background cause that's what America is trained to do.
Y'all not even paying attention to what's going on in the background.....
Last part is from get out when the boy is falling in the pit
Y’all got to look in the background and shit there so much more to it
im surprised how many people totally missed the message on the first run
Young black men please do your research. It was alot of hidden but visible content that went over all of your heads.
