Mathematical definition of time: the change in relative position between at least two sets (and / or subsets). Within this framework you can invent conventions such as clocks or a theory of entropy or a theory of relativity, etc, etc. If there are zero changes in position between at least two sets (or subsets) then t = 0. Time as a negative value between at least two sets has never been observed in nature. It has been said "time stands still for a photon". If you were a photon and you "tried" to determine the change in relative position between two sets you would get t = 0. Thus, "time" is relative to the observer who is measuring the change in relative position between sets.

"What does the word Socrates refer to?" Well, to the idea of him. Find me an atom of love, or a molecule of loyalty. They clearly don't physically exist, but we still know and talk about them. Socrates no longer exists. Some of his words and ideas do.
Love and loyalty are subjective experiences..they dont have particle origins even though we can upto some extent relate them to the complex brain chemistry like love can be attributed to oxytocin..people on the other hand are not subjective like socrates and trump are two completely different persons..
@@jaygadpal4894 That's both my point and irrelevent to my point. Socrates as a man no longer exists. Like the non-material idea of things like love, loyalty, justice, etc., Socrates can only exist now as a collection of concepts. If you really want a physical location, Socrates exists today as only the brain pathways which store information about him.
@@gideonjones5712 yeah but socrates once had a physical manifestation that everyone agreed upon..but what's love or justice for you doesn't necessarily need to be the same emotions for others..thats why you cant possibly compare the two

It can be real problems, as even if even the God's angels had rebellions (no loyalty). The energy and matter though could be fully at his control and most of the angels. So is gravity caused by time or time caused by gravity? Can you see which on is controlling the total flow?
According to the theory of relativity, time doesn't actually slow down. You just caught up to it at light speed. You experience time slower the closer you get to light speed, but time itself moves at the same rate of speed... At least until we start nearing the heat-death of the universe. Then things start getting kinda wonky.
@@colinsanders9397 no, time is a dimension. Really, it doesn't have a speed. Objects have a speed through it. But if you look at a Penrose diagram you'll see that the sum of the square of spatial and temporal velocity (||U||²) is always c². Therefore, as your spatial velocity increases, your temporal necessarily decreases and your passage through time slows.
@@jeffmorin5867 yes it does and is. Even if you consider a purely wave model... waves have a velocity. But serious, light doesn't have particle nature? Photons bruh. Gd.
I feel humanity's absolute adherence to the concept of time is kind of a prison. I would love there to be no word for age or days of the week or months of hours. No concept of rotations around the sun. The only measurement of time would be intuitive. Incredible astronomical events would be witnessed by chance and be all kinds of special. I also feel like everything, past, present and future is happening all at once, so the idea of time is meaningless. I squirm about this a lot because.
What I always found interesting about time was the fact that when the first humans walked the earth, all the materials already existed to build a spaceship or iPhone or whatever advanced device, they just didn’t figure out how for so long. Now just imagine what surrounds you and is awaiting to be discovered/built
I loved the presentation! Thank you for taking the time to put this together for us (: I have my own theories, but I enjoy learning and am very satisfied with how you have done so!
my 2 cents on Time : I've been often times very tempted to think Time as such does not exist. There is only movement and change within space. We invented the concept of Time to decribe movement and change. That however does not explain why Time moves slower as we move faster. I've been thinking about clocks that each show different time. Not two clocks - no matter how precise will ever show the same time. Perhaps Time is somewhat of collection of bubbles that surround objects in Space? I have no idea!
"Time pausing" doesn't make sense. If it paused, assuming it's flowing at all, then it can't be unpaused, since nothing could make it so. The only possibility is the existence of a time outside of time, but at some point, there must be an instance of time that cannot be paused.
That's because you are in The Matrix you can be pause anytime in time as time so chooses to. for instance the famous physicist scientist of our time at the time of the 70s whistleblower about Area 51 and its existence and there he witnessed machine that now we can prove carried this element which was discovered in the hedron collider and 2013 this element it's called element 115 as he mentioned in one of his stories when he was at s4251 he witnessed this machine that beamed the element 115 which has to do something with gravity stop a candle light and it was stuck in that present time there was no in that little circle there was no time it was just their paused.
I think your thesis is implausible because just like time gives our universe infinite possibilities based on the events within it. I think time is similar given time gives itself infinite possibilities depending on the events. If you believe their are multiple dimensions other than our 3D space. An external force could pause and play as they would like not effecting themselves but the contents that they can effect. Kinda like we can effectively pause a video game and then resume or do whatever to it’s time we like. same way a 4 dimensional being could pause our 3D world. Same way a 5th dimensional being could pause theirs etc. a “Pauseception” if you will 🙂
I would think time is just a way of describing passing moments or advancement of something. In a completely empty universe with no objects there would be no time so it is dependent on "things"
I thought for a while that people that travel by plane every week are experiencing time differently than those who stay earthbound. That's not to include the health effects of being in a compressed tube, being scanned often, and spending a lot of time further up the atmosphere.
When my mother four years ago was turning 79. I told her as she was getting sick and I was bringing her to the hospital. I said Mom time is relevant, if you slipped and fell out to camp. If you could not get back up and you're in the process of dying. I said the seconds turn to minutes and the minutes turn to hours hours turn to days. When she died she slipped and fell on the floor. The very next night I stayed out to Camp with the dog and the cat. I talked to my mother the night before. I woke up it was in July and the dog was doing circles. So I got up off the couch and I noticed it was really really cold. The time was 2:30 in the morning, the dog was picking up that that's when she actually passed. So she laid on that floor for probably five to six hours. It's kind of like if you watch the pot of water boiling it takes longer. If you turn around and don't pay any attention to it and boils much quicker. Some people will say we live our whole lives out already and we're dead. When when time comes into the equation, it's your Consciousness perceiving time. So it can be played out on a scale just like the Fibonacci sequence. That's about what I can add to the subject as far as what I've seen. I hope everybody has a blessed night and a great day tomorrow.
All the "past" stuff we know is because they left a "legacy" or a "mark" in to our present. For example I spill water on the floor. So the "legacy" it leaves in the present I'm in, is because of the action made. The first dimension is a line connecting any two points. It has no width or depth, only length. Imagine a 1D world. How is time working there? It's like a 2D plane passing through all the "1D line" and is registering all the events. | -> ------------------|------------------ | -> (1D line (horizontal) and the 2D plane (vertical) passing through the 1D reality) In a 2D world, time works different. You need a 3D object to be constantly passing through the 2D plane to register all the events. And in a 3D world like ours. We need a 4D "object" to be constantly passing through our reality to register all events and give them continuity. (X,Y & Z are registered, but the 4th coordinate plane is what makes time 4D) Past and future are only a recreation of our minds to remember or predict events. In the video Socrates is mentioned. How do we know about him?. He is in the "past", right? The reason we remember about him is because of his "legacy". There's no such thing as "traveling to the past" because there's nothing to record information about the Universe. You throw a glass to the floor, it brakes and how does the Universe know how was the organization of the atoms in the original structure? But, what if we can change the direction of time like in the 1D line. Instead of the 2D plane going to "the right", what if it goes to "the left"? I know this thought of mine it's messed up. I tried to write mi idea. lol
of course we can interpret time by that geometrical interpretation, and i agree with you. it's that time is just defined, it's just nothing real but to define a concept about changing 'position' or the cause of an effect. time travel to the past,i can say it may not exist. somehow it's just my conjecture it can be proven if time has nice relation to information and entropy. i can continue to tell the reason of why time travel to the past doesn't exist. first you know the effect caused by a cause, of course it's not provable, it's just consistent to the physics of the world.which mean an effect needed or must have information about the reason it originated, define time A and time B such that A < B, example, A = 2 second B must be larger than that value, at time B, which is relatively 'a future' to observer present at time A, and at time B, we time travel an apple to time A, at time A the apple will surely appear ( i assume that there's some kind of effect of that apple appearing but then we don't know the physics of time travel and of course we can do that, because the my reason i'm explaining is based on assumption that lead to contradiction which we can say just appeared) , that apple has no information, it doesn't have an effect, it doesn't came from the universe that's from time A, but it came from time B that yet not exist relative to time A and then the observer at time B should also experience apple appear in the past which doesn't make sense, that it became a loop, no origins and no end., which is why time travel(i sometime abbreviated time travel to the past is just time travel)is impossible , cannot be proven except the nice relation about information and time like example, any matter need information, of course it seems true but i believe it need a nicer explanation. there's another reason, that's by relation with energy . but this one is enough.
@@Meilk27 no problem, at least there's some restriction to time travelling , like when we look to the telescope, all we see is a past. but we cannot interact with it.

True, time travel is not possible because what we call time is actually just moments, a moment which doesnt move forward or backward, I think its just static, time doesnt move, it the moments or events that change
As I see it, anyone can jump over a line backwards or forwards but no one can jump over nor climb a great giant wall that's horizontal & vertical and stretching endless both ways keepingin mind that this wall moves thus moving anything infront of it.
I had a crazy thought after watching a video that what if time was a material or one of the original forms of matter and what we measure as time is us moving through time. The video said that time can go either two ways, either time flows the same either direction or time flows slowing in one direction and faster or consistently in the other.
This is just misuse of words, and the reason why physical theories are not formulated in words. Time cannot stop, pause, slow down, speed up. These are words that pertain to motion, and motion is a description of a change of spatial location with respect to time I.e. ds/dt. To refer to a change of location in time with respect to time is just dt/dt. It is not meaningful.
@@easypeasy9598 that cannot be equated to the speed of light because their examples are ludicrous. If one looks outside the realm, especially with the demonstration of the two mirrors and the individual walking, one cannot help but understand that light is instantaneous and that it never speeds up nor slows down and by all definition, is measured by its reflective brilliance. Not only can I prove this, but Hubble took a photo in 1996 that light is in fact, instantaneous and everything Einstein proposed about light was nothing more than PSEUDOSCIENCE, just like 90% of everything you hear about the cosmos. And that other 10%? Only believe HALF ¿`_
Beautifully made video. Intelligent and sophisticated commentary. Lovely background music. Without ever increasing entropy there would be no impression of existence of time. No second law of thermodynamics, no arrow of time.
Time is just numbers. Quick exercise in realisation: Half 1 second until you find the centre... Hint: yourl go on halfing it for infinity, why? because numbers are paradoxical by nature in the same way as the glass is both half full and half empty or neither and not one or the other. (You can go on trying to figure out that one for a life time before finally realising it's both at the same time, a non dualistic perspective) but by all means please continue halfing that second until you find the centre of "time" if you wish. So time does not exist as anything more than a man made construct. Most people confuse time with movement, such as degeneration of cells, the multiplying of cells, movement of water and clouds and so on... there is movement yes, but time is just a way of measuring that movement against a constant with numbers or tally marks. And all counting takes place... you guessed it... in the now. The time is now and all movement and happenings happen in this endless moment. 🙏
What frame of mind that got me though some tedious events started with my father telling me advice when at 19 when I had doubts about 4 years of college. He said one day 4 years will be here so when it does arrive you will have the degree. I now use that to cope with patience and less than enjoyable, even painful ones. At a Dr's office, hospital, work..., picture yourself approaching your car with your keys. I mean really picture it, the car, the jingle of keys.. Then poof! You will be approaching your car and it will hit you. I just travelled though time. Here I am. With practice it can get you through some tough times.
What strikes me once again in this video is the very notion of reality. Regarding the point whether Socrates actually exists if we today still can talk about him. The interesting question here is: What are memories? Where to they come from, why do we have them? It's cool how much stuff biology, physics etc. can explain on a physical level. Yet, on a philosophical level they fail miserably. It is one thing to explain how my brain works of a biological scale and how the scriptures of Socrates were discovered and physically readable. But this still doesn't explain what a memory or a fantasy actually is. We can use our physical brain and read a physical scripture - but how can this actually produce an imagination of Socrates? How does this lead to the real existence of a "meme", how does this lead to our perception of Socrates? Existence is so weird.

The growing block idea makes the most sense to me, and it seems to jibe with our commonsensical view that the future is not here yet, and by definiton can never arrive. We are always at the edge of the timeline. Dig it.
If things are moving from one spot to another then time must exist. Because they're actions are based in the past (where they previously were). And you can't have the past without time.
Great essay. There are so many things that could be said but AFAIK what you call Presentism is undeniable. All experience occurs here and now and every moment (if there are plural moments) seems to arrive complete with a flawless back story about how it came to be the way it is. What we call reality is no different from a dream. Unless you're a lucid dreamer, if you find yourself in a dream you totally buy into it; it all adds up. It's only when you wake up that it no longer makes sense. It has been said that time is an illusion and that makes a lot of sense. Maybe it makes so much sense because everything is an illusion, especially the idea that anything at all is happening?
Time can be explained as a process of energy exchange formed by photon electron interactions. We have photon ∆E=hf electron couplings continuously transforming potential energy into the kinetic Eₖ=½mv² energy of matter, in the form of electrons as an uncertainty ∆×∆pᵪ≥h/4π probabilistic future comes into existence. All it takes for this to be logical is for the spontaneous absorption and emission of light waves to precedes absolutely everything that happens in our three-dimensional world.

I believe that the past, present, and future exist all at once, and we can only perceive it one second at a time. Compare it to a book. Every book contains a complete story. The beginning, middle, and end. We can only read a book one word at a time, but it still exists all at once.
Somewhere out there is an electron created in the first few moments of the Universe that is moving so fast that it hasn't yet experienced one Planck second.

I don't know though about this part at all except to say that a pine tree has cones and those cones drop to the ground and grow and those trees one day make cones and drop down the hillside and grow more trees. @@jennykuser6149 That's jumping from world lines. You will be able to jump at any moment in time in a different world line (parallel universes which are similar to us but different in some way). Paradoxes about time will be solved since you are on different worlds/ timelines. In our universe, it is believed that everything is predetermined, and that moment in the past, present, and future was already set from the moment of the big bang. But if you relate quantum mechanics to it, it's a different story. Events will be uncertain, and that's when TIME comes in order to organize these moments as observers make sense of these events.
. . .So yes there are some questions that keep awake at night ~ But trying to understand time has me pounding my head on the wall ~Thanks for the remainder.
I'm not convinced that time actually exists. The only reason we even have a concept of time is because we can perceive things with 'cause and effect' as the frame of reference. If there is no consciousness to perceive "time" then the circumstance is similar to a photon traveling at *c* because in that frame of reference there is no time passing at all, it just becomes irrelevant and essentially doesn't exist. Maybe conscious minds just produce illusory perceptions of time in order to make sense of reality from moment to moment, otherwise we would be in a constant psychedelic state and unable to act with our egos. It seems to me that when I'm under the effects of mushrooms my brain's sense of time disappears yet I can still think and act albeit in different ways than usual, so perhaps the biggest difference between an organism with a mind and a photon is how the organism can remain consciously aware even with perception of time removed whereas the photon is merely a nonconscious particle without perception of time because it has no mechanism like consciousness to produce perception of time in the first place, but then _that_ calls into question whether or not velocity even matters at all if the prerequisite to "sense" time is to possess a conscious mind. Maybe in order to perceive time you must be sufficiently conscious _and_ moving in space? I'm not even sure anymore at this point but I would really like a definitive answer to these questions someday.
Thinking about time is like thinking about sleeping without dreaming. With no cause and effect to relate to, a stretch of time can be essentially an instant. As soon as a mind intrudes on matter, it relatively collapses down to the cause and effect cycle.
Time only exists because of our perception of moving through space. Going from reference point A to reference point B creates the illusion that there was a “then” for “A” and a “now” for “B”.
6:20 Simple. Socrates refers to an idea of a person that once was on the list of things that existed. Anything that is said to exist in the future is just an idea and nothing else, even if the idea coming true is extremely likely
Idk if this was in the video (have to leave, can't finish) but flies perceive time much slower than us which is why everytime you go to swat a fly or try to catch it, without a fly swatter, it somehow seems to magically teleport through time...
A question which fascinates me concerning time is, how long is 'now'? A simply attempt to subjectively narrow the limits of 'now' have always, to me, always pointed to an event which is greater than 1 tenth of a second but far shorter than 5 tenths (100ms and 500ms respectively). Interestingly, from a neurological perspective there is strong evidence that if an event occurs in our visual field which last for less then approx 200 ms, we do not perceive it. Equally, an audio signal has to exist for around a minimum time of 150 ms. So, prima facie, it seems that 'now is related to our nervous system and our ability to perceive events. Is this a coincidence? If not then what does is tell us about 'now'? As a footnote - how many have experienced the astonishing sense of time that certain drugs can induce? A smoke of some good weed and 'now' stretches out for a crazy length of time. Psychedlics can turn seconds of conventional time into years of trippy time. Clearly 'now' is not an objective event - but what does that mean for time itself?
Timestreams! I've lived through some, didn't know what it's called. So much happened to me one year, events were happening out of order, overlapping, visit from friend who passed,
Lol, you need to update that list now at 5:55. I don't know why your video appeared in my recommended list again, but now that I re-watched it, QE II doesn't exist anymore.
True, time travel is not possible because what we call time is actually just moments, a moment which doesnt move forward or backward, I think its just static, time doesnt move, it the moments or events that change
I‘d actually argue for a shrinking universe. Conceptualize the Evolution operator of the Universe as a function f: E x U -> U, where E denotes events that can happen and U is the set of all possible states of the universe. You can also write this function as E -> (U -> U). The function describes how events are mapped to endomorphisms on the state space of the universe which are then applied to the universe so it changes. It would be a complete and utter miracle, if all those endomorphisms were epimorphisms. The vast majority of functions of type U -> U are not inventive. Hence, whenever events occur that are mapped to such a function, the past gets obfuscated and entropy grows; our universe shrinks.
I'm glad I found this. It got me thinking about something else besides my money troubles but now I have to lay down my theory that just came to me. Sorry if I don't use the right terminology since I am an amateur Philosopher and Not a Scientist or Engineer. Time is the movement of all substance and matter in the universe. In other words, without movement there is no time. If everything in the Universe down to the infinitesimal particle were to stop moving, then time would cease to exist. Nothing stands absolutely still as everything in the universe is is constantly moving whether it be a planet hurdling through space or an electron orbiting an atom. Therefore, it is possible to surmise that, movement has always existed because it was necessary for starting the reaction that set off the big bang but we can only measure time as far back as the big bang because movement prior to that can not be measured or imagined with the technology or knowledge we have now. If I want to compare it to something I would have to imagine time as a river with infinite source where both the beginning and the end will never be found. This next part will make time travel enthusiasts sad but because it moves like a river you can see where it was but you can not travel to the same point because you would have to move all the river backwards to return to the point to which you want to travel. In order to do that you would need the ability of Laplace's demon to know where every miniscule particle in the universe is and the power of a god to move it back there. Sorry Dr. Who fans but that would make time travel impossible because time is dependent on movement to exist.Time is the measurement of movement of everything to its next position in the entirety of the universe. Sorry I can't think of a bigger word than universe to describe location of things in existence. Going to get existential here. Everything exists because movement exist. All chemical reactions, all energy, and all matter. Requires movement of some form to exist or there would be nothing.

"What does the word Socrates refer to?"
Well, to the idea of him.

"The arrow of time has moved forward at a constant speed"
*Einstein has entered the chat*

Thank you for taking the time to put this together for us (:
I have my own theories, but I enjoy learning and am very satisfied with how you have done so!
my 2 cents on Time : I've been often times very tempted to think Time as such does not exist.
Wow! That's very intiguing
"Time pausing" doesn't make sense. If it paused, assuming it's flowing at all, then it can't be unpaused, since nothing could make it so. The only possibility is the existence of a time outside of time, but at some point, there must be an instance of time that cannot be paused.
If you're referring to absolutism, the idea is that time can still continue while the rest of the universe pauses, not that time pauses itself.
@@mystiverse
Time is nothing without movement 🤔
Unless you view time as another dimension of space. Then you could stop and start along that axis however you pleased.

| ->
------------------|------------------
| ->
(1D line (horizontal) and the 2D plane (vertical) passing through the 1D reality)
In a 2D world, time works different.
I tried to write mi idea. lol
You took the words out of my mouth. Not exactly words but the thought process was the same.
of course we can interpret time by that geometrical interpretation, and i agree with you. it's that time is just defined, it's just nothing real but to define a concept about changing 'position' or the cause of an effect.
time travel to the past,i can say it may not exist. somehow it's just my conjecture it can be proven if time has nice relation to information and entropy. i can continue to tell the reason of why time travel to the past doesn't exist. first you know the effect caused by a cause, of course it's not provable, it's just consistent to the physics of the world.which mean an effect needed or must have information about the reason it originated,
define time A and time B such that A < B,
example, A = 2 second B must be larger than that value,
at time B, which is relatively 'a future' to observer present at time A, and at time B, we time travel an apple to time A, at time A the apple will surely appear ( i assume that there's some kind of effect of that apple appearing but then we don't know the physics of time travel and of course we can do that, because the my reason i'm explaining is based on assumption that lead to contradiction which we can say just appeared) , that apple has no information, it doesn't have an effect, it doesn't came from the universe that's from time A, but it came from time B that yet not exist relative to time A and then the observer at time B should also experience apple appear in the past which doesn't make sense, that it became a loop, no origins and no end., which is why time travel(i sometime abbreviated time travel to the past is just time travel)is impossible , cannot be proven except the nice relation about information and time like example, any matter need information, of course it seems true but i believe it need a nicer explanation.
there's another reason, that's by relation with energy . but this one is enough.
I'm following you. It makes sense. I've seen this explained this way before. Thanks for putting in the effort

Time is just numbers.
Quick exercise in realisation:
Half 1 second until you find the centre...

Time exists only in so much as we can measure distance between events.
Really? So distance is a constant so time must be flexible?
Don't confuse duration (time as you know it) with space-time.
But how is there distance between events if events can only happen in the now?

I'm not even sure anymore at this point but I would really like a definitive answer to these questions someday.
this hurts my brain, this is honestly one of the deepest questions ever

Super interesting idea

Time is just a record of events, feels and looks different for everyone
