It's actually very common in the synthesizer world. Since the 1980's patches have been stored on audio tapes and recalled using an audio/tape input on devices. Korg is still doing it now with the Volca series and some eurorack companies do as well. We use a digital communication method called Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK), which is typically used in radio transmission systems.
A tip form a user who had some trouble updating with an iPhone: Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety > turn off “Reduce Loud Sounds”
What an amazing pedal!! Seriously next level!! Hoping to catch the upcoming preorder!
I have never seen using a WAV file to update something. This is Hi-Tech. Totally cool.

does it need to be a stereo signal? meaning TRS?
It can be TS or TRS. It only listens on the tip for the firmware update.
Cool!
