Together with my sailing family we are taking our live aboard catamaran sailing the route my brother Kerry took through earthquake prone South east Asia before his life was cut short, in 1978 by the murderous, insane orders of Pol Pots Khmer Rouge Cambodia. Before his devastating capture, torture and murder, Kerry would write letters home to our family. We would live vicariously through his descriptions of his sailing adventures. Now I am completing a childhood dream to follow his sailing journey through Indonesia and beyond.
We also mention volcano Whakaari White Island and wish to acknowledge those who lost loved ones three years ago during the earthquake eruption off the coast of Whakatane.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through earthquake prone Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

I was taken aback by the raw emotion, the boys playing with the other kids contrasting Robs pains, the beautiful scenes spoiled by litter, only to be cleaning up later. Powerful episode. I feel for Rob because this must be very difficult for him and the rest of the family with all the memories it will bring back. Hopefully you will all get some kind of closure and peace from this trip. It was great to see the boys interacting with the local kids but it is in their nature to do that. I love seeing all the different cultures and the way other people live, it is so interesting. Hey guys. The trip has taken on quite a different perspective now you're actually following his journey. I liked the way you've been able to incorporate Kerry's narrative through his letters. It was quite something to see all those kids unloading offvthe dinghy. I thought it was going to leap up in the air when they all piled off. Nice to see the locals getting stuck in to cleaning up that ever present plastic. Do you still have that recycler?

Can't even imagine going through this. Growing up in the 70's hearing about the atrocities in Cambodia, I didn't know what to do. As an adult, I joined the Royal Navy, because for the most part they have a good humanitarian background. Now retired I want to do more in that field. Much respect to you Rob, hope to meet you on the high seas and share a beer or 2 with you.

I found this to be a deeply emotional episode on several levels. Not helped by the fact that I'm dealing with a truely heartbreaking loss myself right now. I've been in some dark places but watching this just now brought me some perspective.

I felt every emotion in this vlog. Sometimes I think it is a curse to have deep emotions, but I guess it is way better than not having any! The boys were awesome in playing with the local kids. Wow I remember that happening way back when😢. Back in 2005 I went to Cambodia, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh & Sihanoukville. Absolutely loved the Cambodian people they left me with a deep & sincere appreciation of how to put it down all that extremely horrific experiences at the hands of Pol Pot & the Khmer Rouge, absolutely insane. That was an atrocious time in Cambodian history. It was such bad luck that Kerry and friends crossed paths with these barbarians. I was in Siem Reap and saw the remnants of horror these people went through. They as a whole are kind, generous happy souls. Much like most suffering from the actions of power-hungry people. The pain continues.

Woah… what a compelling and tragic story. I was also in SE Asia at the time working with Khmer refugees … I never knew the story of your brother. Hi again I should have told you we are kiwi's to from Waiheke Island. We had our yacht mooring in Puiki bay and our Great friend and Harbour Master was Bill Belcher. who won the single handed Trans Tasman in1974 and in the 1978 one was ship wrecked on Middleton Reef, at 66 years old, he left the reef in his life raft and spent 28 days at sea before being rescued, Trying to navigate to Australia.. His book is a good read too (Shipwreck on Middleton Reef) .. Safe Travels Guys...AL

Here's to Kerry and Stuart. 'Fine men, i knew them both. I have spent many years on the waters where they both breathed their last salt breath - and their fond memory is me with the whole time. In a couple of weeks i will be kayaking for a couple of months on an offshore island immediately across the sea border where they we were heading for.. but never reached. They will be with me there too. (hey Rob, bon voyaging, stay safe... paul e)

6:03 yeah basically the only chicken bones that are dog friendly.. just a useless fact, but cheap and easy to buy from your local butcher, Rob’s correct they just don’t really sell them anymore in main supermarkets, so nobody asks for them..
The mass produced poultry have soft bones. We fed all our dogs them all their lives no problem. Maybe we were lucky.
