Destroyer The U-Boat Hunter is AWESOME

- Destroyer the U-boat hunter is a brand new warship game where you are in charge of a Fletcher class USN destroyer and your job is to keep the convoy safe for a specific period of time.
This is the very first iteration of the game so there's still a lot of features missing but they are coming.
I played 3-5 games on my 1st day and had A LOT of fun.
I'm not sure everything is working as intended but I really enjoyed every second of it.
This game has a lot of potential.
If I had to describe it I would say it's something between Hunter Killer, Cold Waters and Silent Hunter, but in a surface ship, instead of a submarine.
Enjoy and have fun watching ;)

Hard carry by Antler. Flambino scrub reported for blocking Antler xD
For future reference, you have True and Relative Bearings, Relative bearings are relative to you and the direction you are facing, a Contact at 270 Relative is directly to your Port side (Left). True Magnetic with North being 360, if you sail a course of 325 and you have a contact Bearing 045 True then that contact is Bearing 090 Relative
Just a small correction but for a target at bearing of 045 true to be 090 relative you need to sail a course of 315.
I was a Sonar Technician on The U.S.S. Laffey DD724 a Sumner Class Destroyer for 28 months in the mid 1960s. We had the original SQS-1 Sonar and an electro-mechanical Attack Director. It looked and operated nothing like what is portrayed here. This must be pre-1943, because that is when our ship was commissioned. We had a circular display that radiated outward and was omni-directional. Totally unlike what is shown in this game. The rest is pretty realistic though. Reminded me of my time in the Navy.
I hope they will come out with a little more modern portrayal of a Sonar Console. It would be truly awesome to relive some interesting times on a Sonar Team again.
The Laffey is a National Monument on display at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in South Carolina, USA.
@Dionisos161 I received a demo, and I tried it, but it just didn't hold my interest because of my prejudice towards the real sonar system.
Wouldn’t it be possible that the ship had upgrades made to it’s sonar after the war? I don’t doubt that radar looked different. Then again radios are still being used from the 80s so what the hell do I know.
@@Morphman19 One of the things we were proud of was our original SQS-1 Sonar. It was original equipment. The first first of a line of operational SONAR consoles. It's technology was pretty old, but I suppose it could have been updated as I was yet unborn when the ship was launched. Other upgrades like the FRAM 1 VDS and the DASH units were added, So, yes, it's possible.
Like I stated, I am prejudiced to the system I worked on. I didn't hide that.
AN/SQS-1 did not enter service until 1952 (The AN/ designation system for electronic equipment was created postwar). This game is probably simulating one of the QC-series of sonars which was in service at the time. The Sumners initially received the QGA Sonar, although production problems meant that many were still equipped with the earlier QC.
@@forcea1454 Thanks for the update. Always good to get more information. It's great that someone still has this information.
Happy to know you're enjoying that kind of games too Flambino, gives us bits of hope for our own ;)
Have fun & keep up the great work!
I was just thinking that if the UI of Task Force Admiral will be similar to this one it would be awesome
@@panzerothelake2178 Well we just had a little UI featurette - but when it comes to how it works, our video from July was rather self-explanatory I think :)
Overall we're more of a strategy game and Destroyer is more of a simulation, so although we recreate similar environments, we don't interact the same way with them (Destroyer has you interacting directly, we use them mostly as backgrounds & supports for a custom interface). Same references, different needs :)
And thanks for following us!
@@DrydockDreamsGames thx that makes sense.
I added your game on my Steam wishlist more than two years ago and can't wait to play it one day :)
Good luck with the development !
@@IPM71 Thank you it's kind of you - much appreciated :)
A very welcome change of pace from WoW... i hope you keep giving us more videos of this awesome game as it is a proper simulator much more in touch with reality of u-botes hunting.
38:50 - Was when I realized you were tunnel-vision at this point. Not Antler's fault lol. You told him to attack and then reversed into him! It's like watching a driving fails video lol, but very entertaining. Good job for 99% of it!
Fletchers were seldom used to hunt U-boats, first, because most of them were directed to the Pacific immediately after shakedown; and second, because, with their single rudder, their tactical turn radius was on the order of 700 yards, which allowed U-boats to evade them with ease. ASW in the Atlantic was the purview of the 1800-ton Benson/Gleaves class, which not only had a smaller tactical radius, but also because their raised forecastle made them dryer when dealing with heavy North Atlantic swells. The Fletchers and their spinoffs, the Sumner and Gearing classes, were notoriously wet, a problem that continued in those ships that served down to the 1980s. In the Cold War, a number of Fletchers were converted to escort destroyers (DDEs), which entailed removing the No.2 5-inch mount and replacing it with a trainable Mk.15 Hedgehog launchers. A few served long enough for Hedgehog to be replaced by a Weapon Alpha forward-shooting depth charge projector.
this would be so cool as a coop type game where you all work together using the tools and giving callouts
Jingles is educational watching this game, but you are highly entertaining
This was a great video! I'm a former RAN PWO and I agree that hunting submarines is really, really hard! But if this game was true to reality, you would have blown your own stern off with your own depth charges at least twice, and blown the bottom out of Antler at least once - so just as well it's not too realistic 😂😂😂
The accuracy of the game play system gave me flashbacks to all the GQ drills we did when I was in the Navy. So good.
Can't watch the rest of the video but I hope you figured out that your issue was that you were performing a very wide sonar sweep. The red pipper shows which bearing the sonar is directed along - sonar in this era was very directional. Antler was telling you the sub was close and on your right, and when you looked at your sonar they were searching 40 degrees to your port. That's why you couldn't see the sub. Wide sonar is best for closing slowly with a distant sub that you don't have an exact fix on. The whole of the beginning of the engagement you had a radar bearing and visual with the periscope, so you knew exactly where to tell your sonar operator to look. Charging in at flank speed means you will very quickly lose situation awareness. If it wasn't for Antler half your convoy would have been dead 5 minutes into the game.
Also, the deeper the drop the larger the explosion from depth charges. If the enemy sub is deep then a tight pattern is pointless, because the time taken for the depth charges to sink gives the sub time to evade. Wide pattern is much more effective for deep targets because the explosions are much bigger.
Edit: I skipped to the end - it's an early access game with basic AI. You told Antler to attack the sub and then sat over the same sub in reverse. Not sure what you expected to happen.
He was just like me when it happened, expected more of Antlers crew to see and avoid. But alas, the AI sucks at collision avoidance.
Next game leaving a big smile on Flambass: The CV-Hunter
that guy sipping his coffee or something in the end must be saying to himself
"Welp.... that happened..."
Your variety content is underrated. I agree, this game is cool and I'd never have heard of it before watching this.
game is beta only, unfinished free trial. came out less than a week ago
ASW in real life is very much like watching paint dry. But once you get into the attack phase, the most effective method in World War II was the "creeping attack", employing two escorts. The first kept track of the U-boat, moving along at low speed for best sonar performance. It would then direct the second destroyer into position to make a fast depth charge run, releasing the charges on command from the first destroyer. The U-boat, focused on the pinging of the first destroyer, never got a chance to evade the attack by the second destroyer. Sonar was most effective at speeds under ten knots, and was almost worthless at speeds over 20 knots, due to flow noises around the sonar dome.
I should also mention that World War II sonars employed a narrow "searchlight" beam, which could be trained in azimuth, but had a fixed elevation. Thus, as a destroyer closed with a submarine, the sub would enter a "blind zone", either above or below the sonar beam. Thus, in a solo attack, the depth charges had to be dropped blind, based on the assumption the submarine would maintain its course and speed after it entered the blind zone. Hence the preference for the "creeping attack". Hedgehog, as well as the British Limbo Depth Charge Mortar, fired their weapons ahead of the destroyer, allowing it to continue tracking the submarine throughout the attack. Hedgehog used a small bomb, but one fitted with a contact fuze, so it would only detonate if there was a direct hit.
extra realism would be if depth charges could damage friendlies as well as the sub. you were dropping charges right on top of Antler.
And himself... full reverse while dropping charges.
This game s amazing i played the other side where ur the commander of the u-boat. Game is called Silent Hunter if u ever wish to play it. This vid was cool hope to see another one soon really liked the game.
This is an amazing game! I am sure it will be hugely improved with updates. It makes one realise just how complex things really were out at sea. Sailors didn't only have to deal with the weather conditions and massive waves but also maintain a vigilant monitor of all their stations. Great game.
I’m not sure you did the tutorials on sonar? You had it pointing in the wrong direction or were going flank speed most of the time just getting in the way… also there is a huge difference between true and relative… this was a very frustrating video to watch but I’m glad you enjoy the game and hope to watch again when you improve.
depth charges create cavitation in the water that makes sonar useless, so when you spam your depth charges your blinding your own sonar and your friendlys sonar
Start of the game - really sharp quality on the Maneuvering Board plot. Too bad this game does not let you use a Royal Navy sloop as an option.
If you liked this game, the studio that made this game has another game called Barotrauma that's also very good I recommend that game too.
Also, I really appreciate you playing this game, I've been getting ads for this game and thought it looked interesting now I know I should definitely give it a try!
Flambass let down by teammates derpiness once again... looks like a wows moment to me.
Wasn't Antlers Fault, Flambass told is ship to stop, but then he told it to go 2 thirds back!!!!
Radio message from Antler: "Sorry, eh."
Oh look guys, a ASW game that doesn’t takes 5000 depth charges to kill a sub.
Would be fun to watch you play more!
For future reference, bearing 000 is magnetic north. Bearing 000 relative is wherever your bow is pointing.
You're much better off playing this game on True bearing rather than relative while new to it IMHO. Relative bearings are useful so you can work out precisely where to go, but this game is much easier with true bearings. Relative bearing has good strategic value, particularly when one wants to use guns against a surfaced U-Boat. If the boat is 270 relative, then you know you swing all the guns left and you can blast F out of it.

CDR Flambass, you are hereby ordered to appear before a court of inquiry to explain your actions in hazarding your command, as well as an allied Royal Canadian Navy destroyer.
oh man...enjoyed watching you playing Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter, all that hard work...an this...an F? i would say the ghost in the machine has it out for you sir.
This game would be really immersive if the devs got the ship equivalent of Gunner Heat PC!’s tank voice acting. Otherwise, this game looks really fun and i hope development goes well and that flambino will upload more of this game
That ending was just tragic🤣
i bet Antler was just pissed, because you launched depthcharges right on her deck :D also not sure how often used tactic, backing up in combat was :D
Should probably be listening to the Sonar operator alot more to track the subs location. Also your going TOO FAST so the Sonar can't track the sub in the first place. 1/3 or 2/3s i think is the limit before the sonar can't hear anything.
The sonar has 2 modes, as the game calls it "true" search and "Relative" search. Relative is a wide search for finding the subs location relative to you and the True search will give you the subs EXACT bearing and range.
The trick is triangulation so you end up in front of sub when you drop the depth charges. Generally speaking you might end up going right AT the sub and the moment he drops off your sonar (cus it losses contact the moment the sub goes under your ship) thats a good time to Smack the depth charge Launch button.
definitely getting some grey hound vibes if anyone watched the movie
the ending was great, but the whole time he was trying to locate B sub i was telling him to slow down and stop over correcting
i would watch more of this game
Would love to see the game Trenlass uploaded with you, Trenlass, and Monkey (from your perspective).
Also, only took me 2 games to realize motoring around in reverse is the easiest way to shit on the sub...you can actually see what you need to do via the cheat window. I'm sure the game devs didn't intend for us to go that route but it sure is a lot easier than trying to use that stupid trr and then only have the sub dive and hard right on you at the last 200 yards.
Well if you don't give a f* about realism in a game that's aimed at realism freaks, that's you destroying your own game :) if you'd do that IRL, you'd blow your ship up with depth charges.
Reminds me of Destroyer command
Cooperative multiplayer would be fun... But the thought of multiplayer makes me think of a scenario where one player controls the escorts vs another player controlling the wolf pack. Either would be excellent with this type of gameplay.
Flambass watch Jingles video from a few days ago about this game. It will help you understand the info coming in and course info.
Seems like the real enemy is Antler. The germans would be proud.
pop up screen is a huge cheat if u asked me.
I'm pretty sure irl if u went over depth charge explosions... the DD over would be seriously damaged, if not broken in half.
F for Flambass
When you switch to sonar it looks like all your switches are off.
When even the AI is a potato
Awesome, would love to see more
When you back into an AI ship you told to attack sub and cry
Glad to see your playing this, I think when the Campaign comes out
you will have to save your depth charges from one side of Atlantic to the other
its a long way, Well done though Flambass
Well, your depth charges sunk both your ship and the antler LONG before the collision so that doesent mather:) Game need to be a bit more realistic when it comes to that but it has potential:)
Thank you for pointing out that Flambass sank himself and Antler with his own depth charges - I was watching and thinking, "I'm sure he's sunk himself and Antler at least twice" 😂😂😂
@@geoffcameron1138 refering to what would happen realisticly if you drop depth charges under a destroyer, it would simply break in half....
This game looks amazing.....i can only hope it comes to console as well 😇😅
Can you imagine coordinating with WoWs potatoes in co-op to do this, lol. Either you get some Thad that's done this IRL... or you get some window licker wallet blasting on radio for the most intense head pain ever against a smug sub just letting your team Antler the convoy for them.
Sack race sped runs.
Antler - Captain Hans?
Please tell me that they planned a multiplayer subs vs dd....
this was a cool video, wouldn't mind seeing more of the same
So.... does this mean that, wg really buff the anti-sub weapon
How in the world did you miss the sub? U were looking at a wrong bearing all the time. You missed a red marker on course marker in the top of the screen😔
I suspect the picture-in-picture is not quite simultaneous...
The number of times I was almost shouting at the screen just watching means I'll never watch anyone stream this lol.
"Depth charges go off the back! He's half a mile in front of you!"
"Stop over-steering and going too fast!"
"This isn't fucking WOWS!"
@@JohnCBobcat Well, I think most of the drops were just to get the picture in picture up, not to actually hit the sub. He used that for locating the sub, ignoring all the instruments designed to do just that :-)
Mandatory youtube engagement comment.
Looks like how to easily counter a sub in wows. Just that easy. Besides it takes 42 Minutes XD
Just this reaction tells me this shouldn't be multiplayer, Just imagine 3 hours into a co-op and jingles rams you just like that after almost a clean 100% clear on the hardest level, imagine your reaction at that time.
and no shade to jingles he's lovely but its jingles.. it WOULD HAPPEN!
That's hilarious.
I got so frustrated watching this video 😂
You were looking the wrong direction every time haha
Please redo the tutorial Flambino
I've seen You doing better torp beats, even on biggies like this.
sabotage from friendly's just like wows
weegee: noooooo you cant show them how ASW works, nooooo dont tell people subs are blind and wont fire from depth. NOOOOOO: you just cant show how hydro detects subs at range.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, we need to justify 2km hydro spotting vs sub
noooooooooooooo
thx for new content, but it's not my game 👍
This game will benefit after subs become regular in WoWS ("W"orld of "W"arships "S"h..show)
SO much of this.
What are the U-Boats even doing?
Outplaying Flambass
Even on this game you get idiot team mates! ;) lmao!
. . . and they can't spell "Bloodhound" . . . ?
haha stress game
your going to fast for sonar slow down lol
yey
Lol fail in an epic way. Report antler for team damage
Antler clearly plays too much WoWs.
stop using Relative your confusing yourself lol....
that's why it's beta. Same shit keeps happening to me......they always run into me. I have decided to send them to the far corners of the map so they can't fuck up my game play. stupid A.I. escorts.
2nd!!!!
Boring and repetative
Meh, that voice is terrible. The pauses between words is just pain. I can't even finish this video.
check Wolfpack345 for experienced user combatting. You're missing some of the gameplay basics I think (yes, from my lazy chair)
