  • Hello Again everyone! It's been a while. This episode has definitely been the hardest so far to produce and I definitely won't ever make a video of this size again. It's been an absolute monster but I think it turned out good. I'm going to do a few different things between now and the next episode. I’ll put the plan for the next few videos in a pinned comment during the Premier.
    Thanks all!

    Hello, I am taking a break from the main series to work on some smaller videos, the next uploads will come as follows:
    - Pilot Episode Remake (old one has bad audio and I want to add some things)
    - Smaller episode exploring a specific topic
    - Life Around A Red Dwarf Season 3 Episode 0
    - Another smaller episode exploring a specific topic (or maybe 10k special?)
    - Life Around A Red Dwarf Season 1 Episode 5
    I hope to be working on S1E5 by December.

    Tonight on Red Dwarf:
    Worms f*ck up the ocean floor.
    Sea-spiders host a furry convention.

    I'm so glad that there are other speculative alien biological evolution projects out there. I love Biblaridion's work on Alien Biospheres, and I'm ecstatic that other such series exist, especially well-done ones like Project Rose. You cover your topics very thoroughly, you explore some things that Bibz glosses over in less detail (EX: the development of a closed circulatory system), and you come to some solutions that his creatures have not featured much of (EX: bioluminescence). I'm very much looking forward to the next episode of this series, but I understand how much effort it takes to make one of these. Godspeed, you mad xenobiologist you!

    Idea for some plants in an arid region. In real life we have created nano-materials based off some structures found on desert beetles. They have the interesting effect of becoming more hydrophilic the lower the ambient humidity is. Cover the surface of desert plants with these structures, along with grooves that guide the condensation to their roots. Alternatively use more conventionally hydrophilic structures on hairs around the pores in the plants so the water lost to transpiration is partially turned to condensation that can drip down or flow down grooves or tubes to be partially recovered, reducing the water requirements of the plants.

    What would be the advantages and disadvantages of adding that extra iron to make purple blood?

    • @TlalocTemporal
      @TlalocTemporal 2 года назад +6

      Besides needing twice as much iron, hemerythrin usually doesn't use cooperative binding, so it's usually 1/4 as effective at carrying O2 as hemoglobin, but it binds that oxygen more stongly, so it's better at leaching it out of low-oxigen fluid. It's also very resistant to carbon monoxide poisoning and other oxides as well as nitrides, so you don't need to be as careful with your blood mixture.

    • @marxtheenigma873

      @@TlalocTemporal Any other options for having the color? Would just pigments have a good possible reason?

    • @TlalocTemporal
      @TlalocTemporal 2 года назад +1

      @@marxtheenigma873 -- Technically speaking, oxygen carrying compounds are usually pigments already, same with photosynthetic compounds.
      As for other colours, we know about red hemoglobin and purple/magenta hemerythrin already. Many worms and some lizards (I think) have a breakdown product of hemoglobin called clorocruorin that's light green, and sometimes pink at high concentrations. Crustaceans, arachnids, and molluscs have the medically famous hemocyanin that's a rich cyan made from copper. There's a group of coldwater fish that don't use an oxygen carrier at all and have clear blood. Beetles, and many bivalves have the yellow/orange vanabin that's made with vanadium, it doesn't carry oxygen at all, we don't know why it's in there.
      Those are the most common ones we've discovered so far. There's definitely others, especially if your environment has other metals available. I recommend looking on r/worldbuilding and the worldbuilding stackexchange for other possibilities.

    Any photosynthesizer (like plants) close to the twilight zone would be very dark gray, almost black. The opposite would occur on the warm side. In the inhabitable zone the closer you get to the hot part the more red and bright the photosynthesizers would get. If it the planet was close enough to the sun (this would make it almost uninhabitable so don't count this as possible) the plants may even appear white.

    would it be an issue to ask for rephrasing? We - the ppl of science, know its not that the organisms chose to have any adaptation. Its not like they choose or opt for not having hair to improve reproduction. Id like to see greater emphasis on the external conditions guiding their evolution, by saying "cold climate might select for", or "the X wont support their current form, so mutations leading to Y would give the organisms and advantage and allow this clade to prosper"
    So that the less educated can understand the natural selection properly

    Heey, love your video, you've got some fascinating speculative evolution going on here. However, I have to point out a small mistake that you made. You mention a symbiotic relationship as a relationship between two species where both species benefit. I see this A LOT in many different places so I can see where you got it from. But Symbiosis is defined as the close relationship between two species, regardless of the effect they have on each other. Symbiosis can be divided into parasitism, commensalism and mutualism so although yes, species undergoing a symbiotic relationship can both benefit this is not always true. Mutualism is the correct term for the examples you give here.
    Anyway sorry for my rambling, hope you find it constructive and hope you have a nice day!
