    The lower back is a complicated fellow.
    You could have tightness, burning, dull aches, shooting pains to one side, or both sides or dead in the middle, and sometimes there seems to be no rhyme or reason why.
    You can start to believe you have a weak back, falling into the trap of believing you have weak X,Y or Z muscle - but even after you do thousands strengthening exercise reps for that muscle...you never feel any more confident.
    You can even be told that your discs have “slipped” (which is a phrase I very much dislike... your discs are pretty well attached) and believe that even when you’re not in pain you still need to be careful because it could slip again at any moment.
    You can end up spending years avoiding things you love and let your lower back rule your life, even let it affect your work, relationships, playing with your own children...
    It shouldn’t be like that.
    No matter what you're experiencing, there are people who you can look to who've managed to recover from the same or worse. Let this thought inspire you, rather than make you feel defensive.
    The movements that will help you are out there! It could take months or even years before it feel like you’re getting anywhere, but when the alternative is doing nothing and just letting yourself get weaker...? You just need to ask: where do you see yourself in the future?

    I had a microdiscectomy on my L5 S1 a year ago and am having a flare-up. I have permanent neuropathy in my right foot and calf from nerve impingement. Thank you for bringing up the mental aspect. I used to mountain bike, kayak and have been a volunteer firefighter for 8 years. My life has changed because I am SO afraid that I am going to end up in extreme pain, again. This flare-up is causing anxiety, but watching several of your videos is helping me to have Hope. I have such deep gratitude for you and what you do. Thank you!!

    Tom you are a treasured gift to us. I never had this explained to me by 2 different back specialist and 2 different GP`s. I have always done my own research for years but I have missed some of what you are explaining. Such an eye opener. Before I watched this video I started strengthening my upper back which my lower back was feeling better after one session. So you have explained this. Thankyou so much Tom.

    This was so motivating, thanks so much Tom. I have sciatica and am so worn down by the pain it demotivates me to want to do anything about it. But it was so good to hear you explain that I should be moving my back and body and sitting around feeling sorry for myself is not doing me any good, physically or mentally. Thank you. ❤

    I'm more or less in the same line as Tom and certainly on exactly the same wavelength and claim a fair degree of expertise in the subject ..... hence very well qualified to assess the man. Of the hundreds of "experts" I've checked over the years , perhaps over 500 , Tom Morrison is a veritable genius. He's the real deal , his understanding and approach is the real no bullshit kind , plus his great sense of humour and keeping it all light and fun and putting it all together in such a wonderful positive manner. Really if you're lucky enough to come across this guy latch on to him .

    THANK YOU. During your video I decided to do bear crawls (stability), shoulder touch planks(anti rotation) one sided farmer's carries(anti-flexion), bird dogs (stability) and hitting the boxing bag with a square stance. Then I carried a kettlebell on one hip each side and lifted and sorta threw it up in the air slightly. The last kettlebell exercises is stuff I know I do at work with kids that throws me outta wack. But after all those I feel a lot better whereas I felt awful and hurt before. Note: I may not have gotten the terminology right per exercise. But hopefully.
    Edit: and it's back. Momentary relief like you said 😂

    Had lower back and pelvic back pain for over a year. Sitting in soft seats is worst.
    Troed yoga, like pidgeon stretches etc definitely made it worse.
    Had MRI, no sign of any damage to lower lumbar. Tried SI belts to no avail
    Really not sure what to do now
    Kept training as per physio.

    If you could provide some advice on getting rid pf SI joint pain that’s preventing me deadlifting, that’d be great. Can’t see any immediate issues with technique, and banded hip stabilisation drills are doing nothing for it.

      @@TomMorrison Yes, mate. There were some good tips on there. I think the problem is that there’s sometimes too much information and different recommendations about how to improve mobility and stability. I’ve been following a lot of Squat University tips, but he prescribes so many intricate exercises it ends up taking way too long to warmup for squats, for example. It’s very difficult to know which specific drills you need to be doing, when to do them and for how long. Seems as though there are too many variables to consider sometimes.

    • @TomMorrison
      @TomMorrison  3 года назад +2

      @@mjm0787 exactly right! That’s why I created the SMM program, there’s a few really important principles that you need your body to be good at and if they are in place then the need for a lot of the resistance band stuff and extra long warm ups and corrective exercises kinda goes away, too often do I see people doing like 10 exercises to improve their external rotation and glute med activation... and they can’t hold a side plank... its like, there’s more important things to work on first before you need to go super detailed and sometimes the important stuff is all you need and you can train happily

    • @karenminard2464
      @karenminard2464 3 года назад +2

      @@TomMorrison I did your test and I have full strength in my hip flexors so based on what you said I need hip flexor stretching which makes sense with the 5+ years history I went through before the hip replacements. I ended up sitting mostly and laying around because the pain was excruciating it was almost impossible to get up out of a chair due to the pain. I don’t have that type of pain anymore but when I’m laying down with my legs extended it’s extremely painful in the upper thigh to lift my left leg to bring it upward. So I will use all of your maneuvers for getting that especially the left one stretched. I may be 74 years old next month but I’ve been active all my life and I live full-time in my RV and have for the past +19 years. This foot drop has really taken it’s toll on my activity but I do everything that I can with some caution so that I won’t fall such as, I still can still dance, hike, kayak. I have not tried my bicycle yet but I purchased a “street strider” and I use it in its stand so far. Instead of the crap brace I was put in I did research and bought what is called step smart which has saved all my good muscles from atrophying along with the atrophy on the paralyzed side of my left leg. So I look like I walk normal. Anyway I know this is too long but it’s nice to talk to somebody who gives a crap. By the way I had intermittent months of physical therapy but this is the one area I can’t seem to get turned around this high upper left thigh, lower ab pain when I try to lift my leg when I’m laying down. And I believe this is all part of the stuff that causes the left Glut piriformis pain when I’m sitting too long.

    Well we all have our preconceptions but not all have the luxury of a stable spine and those with Spondylolisthesis probably don't.. so maybe should have some more kind of knowledge before you make a statement like that

      I have an L4/L5 disc protrusion and L5/S1 disc extrusion with nerve impingement, degeneration and flattening, even muscle atrophy and work with people all the time with even worse that have overcome a lot of their symptoms, there’s lots that can be done movement wise, I am not saying it’s easy, and it’s different for everyone.

      @Tom Morrison that doesn't sound very nice..
      🤔 I didnt say anything about movement in that sence, so dont know what that has do with it?
      in the description, you wrote that you didn't like the concept of a slipped disc and with the statement regarding discs insinuated that it didn't exist.. but it does and Spondylolisthesis is the name for it..
