I'm American and appreciate your input for this series. I watched Emily in Paris to help me with my French. Stereotyping is big in America against almost every culture and ethnic group. I was wondering about Emily's wardrobe, her shoes (walking everywhere in heals), the apartment and not once did she ever complain about money, getting around, etc. It was definitely a fantasy. I love your critique about the show and would love to know what shows, etc. you recommend to better learn French. KEEP GOING!!!

I could recommand "The hook up plan" (Plan coeur),"Ten percent' (10 pourcent),which are really nice french comedy tvshows. My favourite french movies are L'Auberge espagnole, Les poupées russes and Casse tête chinois (it is a french "saga" following the main character through his different phases and adventures in life with his friends and lovers)

As an American, I find the show terribly silly. Nevertheless, I admit to being a bit hooked on it, and I'm looking forward to the next season. At first, seeing the beautiful shots of Paris was enough to allow me to overlook the awfulness of it, but eventually the story took over.
It is what it is, as they say, and at many points it was simply cringeworthy. It made me wonder why actors from both countries were willing to participate. Actually three countries if you consider Lily Collins' dual citizenship. But, it also brought back fond memories of experiences in Paris, and France in general, experiences which dispelled my incorrect expectations to see that, yes, in Paris, regardless of what you might have heard, a kind person will help an inexperienced American with her overly packed suitcase get down the steps of the Metro and another will voluntarily come up and help her navigate the routes on the Metro map.
We are currently watching Season 2 of Family Business. I recommend it, and not only because it's not yet another British murder mystery series on Acorn or Britbox. It's shot in the fabulous city of Lyon with a cast of mostly female lawyers practicing family law-not to be confused with the other show with the same name about a family trying to salvage its business by selling cannibis. The show is full of drama on many levels. If you've already watched Call My Agent, try Family Business. You'll probably find the dialog is a bit slower and easier to understand.

We lived in France for a time and my mom and I wanted to travel by train to the Netherlands where our family lives, back then I was just a baby probably 2 years old.
My mom needed to find the right metro to go across Paris so we could catch the next train to the Netherlands.
And the Parisian people were really helpful to my mother
One took me in their arms apparently and the other took the suitcases and then they showed my mother to the next metro and explained where to get off.
Once in the Netherlands the hospitality at the train station was not the same.
I guess you could say the French are also direct in helping people, if they want to help they do it.

The USA is known to be one of the "1st world" countries with the longest working hours. And overworking is usually considered a sign of great working culture. This policy comes from the capitalistic idea that more work always equals more wealth. But several studies that compare the productivity of the USA with other European countries have shown that imposing longer hours on employees doesn't automatically end in increased production. Many European countries with fewer working hours have employees as productive as American employees. I guess Emily in Paris wants to make fun of the European workers who work less, and in general of the European tendency to give workers more holidays and more time for rest, which for American eyes is seen as "excessive slacking". I personally see this as human decency. Life is short, and the last thing I want is to lose 1/2 of my day because of work. In reality, European workers have been found to be less stressed and overworked than Americans.

So many shows on t.v are guilty with the apt thing. Not just Emily in Paris. As a New Yorker, at least she doesn't have a ginormous living room like they depicted on Friends.
And Sex and the City. Carrie would never have been able to afford even a tiny apt in a brownstone in Manhattan. I think people expect too much reality in entertainment. Don't get me started on how many people come to New York and tried to dress like they did in Sex and the City. No one dresses like that here. Maybe a little more now (just a little), but not when the show started. And Sex and the City Carrie and Mr. Big plot line was also so unrealistic. Maybe not the toxic relationship but that you will move here to NYC and meet a billionaire. I do agree that it is a little annoying that all men fall in love with Emily. As you continue watching Emily in Paris, her Parisian co-workers warm up to her. But they weren't just rude to her because they were Parisian. They didn't want someone from the corporate office coming in uninvited spying on them and telling them what to do. But New Yorkers would call Emily a hick from Chicago too. I love the character Sylvie. I think she is a wonderful role model for women. I love that she's a woman in her 50s and still owns her sex appeal and wears sexy dresses. A common complaint about the show is how much English they speak. It's an American show so they have to work it in but if two French characters are alone, they speak in French. Both Emily in Paris and Sex and the City may be unrealistic, but I love both of them. So glad you like Emily in Paris even with it's imperfections.

Well my experience in Paris has always been good with a few exceptions. I speak enough
French to get by and I have been there a lot from age 19 on. My French gets better near the end of every trip. I did not like Emily in Paris as far as the story but loved the background. Rewatching with my wife, who also loves Paris but speaks no French, she is very shy and fears looking like a dumb American, and I see it more of a comedy and as hard on Emily and her attitude as it is on the French. I had a lady in a shop be quick to correct my bon jour to soir, and I initially was taken aback but now I know the cultural rule. She was doing me a favor as happened in Emily. I notice they seemed friendly later. My only other bad experience was with a postal clerk who must have been having a bad day. I have found the French quite nice and glad to help. They sure like American stuff, Carhart and Levi’s everywhere this fall. We danced to Jonnie be Good in a street dance and as soon as they realized we were Americans smiles and genuine greetings everywhere. Emily is just soap opera fun and should not be taken seriously by either Americans or French.

I know it's just a comedy series (and not a documentary), but Emily should definitely learn French from Alexa. It's annoying to see her surrounded by Francophones at work and not progressing much with her French. That is definitely one of the best ways to "immerse" herself to speed up her French learning process. At the very least, she should learn to pronounce her French words properly.....especially those containing the letter 'R'.
But it's a fun show to watch, though.

I used to be one of these people that have this ideal of Paris being the city of dreams. But as I learned the language and dived into the culture, I started realizing that Paris is just like any other city: it has its beauties but also its problems, people have financial problems, their own personal issues. And really! I went to Paris and I can assure you that Parisians, in general, do not mind whether they're wearing Channel or C&A... people got this big illusion when it comes to Paris. And I think that's why the show bothers me so much. I've been this person blinded by this Paris ideal, but as I got deep into the language and culture, I started seeing things a little like Parisiens...

I enjoy the Photography, but I watched the show in French and her accent makes it hard to understand. So I use subtitles and they don’t correspond to what they are literally talking. I don’t understand why ?
Regarding the manners in France, I have lived in 7 countries between 1 and 17 years and my point of view is that so far French people have the best manners, hands down. They offer their seats at the metro, they help with the luggage up the stairs at a metro station, etc.
Go to Canada where worldwide they want people to think that they are nice, well in the English side of Canada people don’t greet when you go into an elevator, an office, a shop. They don’t hold the door open for the next person, if you find a co-worker in the street they will ignore you and don’t greet. People make a huge effort not to make eye contact or smile! The only thing Canadians do very often is say I am Sorry, I am Sorry for anything. Honestly, if they will pay more attention to people they would not have to say so much I am Sorry.

I admire French culture, French cuisine, French intellect, But When I visited France I was appalled that Internet cafes would randomly choose to close one and a half hours early, just because the staff wanted to go home. I went to the the Musee Dorsee and planned my time carefully to see and experience ever pierce of art that I had only seen in books, you know, the reason the museum exists and charges a fee. But the security guy whose only responsibility is to make sure no one touches the paintings and whose only effort is not falling asleep while sitting on his stool wanted to close the top floor an hour and fifteen minutesearly. He can read the signs on tho door, he knows when the museum closes. Ten minutes early? Sure. Fifteen? A bit unnecessary, but I guess. Pushing people out of the museum an hour and fifteen minutes early, people who paid hard earned money to buy plane tickets to France, rent hotels rooms in Paris, eat at Parisian restaurants, and paid to enter the museum for the day and have access and view the art? That is man child laziness that nothing less than obscenely selfish. I loved the art, the food, the feel of Paris, but that incompetent petty behavior was unacceptable and intolerable. Once, would have been “Cest La Vie”. Twice was annoying. After the third time in three days of my planned week in Paris. The whole trip was tainted, like the test of soap in a good cup of coffee or if some added some vinegar to a fine glass of wine. It’s as if the Parisians as a group were saying “Do you have Money? Good. Spend it then fk off. We don’t want here, we just want tour money.” Ymmv but there are always repercussions for rudeness, it’s like litter. Only some people litter, but you all have to live in the mess that is made, and parisians who tolerate the rudeness of other parisians are just as accountable.

Because unlike most American girls abroad, Emily is intelligent and super beautiful. Those who hate her are just reminded of the thing they hate the most about themselves. Because the show is actually SATIRICAL. Whatever flaws Emily has, it is base on actual Americans who immitate Carrie Bradshaw. Those women exist. While I love Carrie in the old series, I dread meeting those perky American girl who talk as if there are 4 cameras in the room and they spend an entire memorizing lines and monologues.

My sister moved from Germany to Paris. She lived in the 19th Arrondissement , Quai de la Loire, in a "Studio" - 10m2, no kitchen and a super tiny bathroom. She soon noticed some "cultural differences". Her female boss invited her for 20.00. My sister was 19.59 at the front door, and rang the bell precisely at 20:00:00. After ringing a 2nd time her comletely surprised boss opened the door, she was preparing les legumes for the meal, her husband was still in the bathtub. My sister learned, that an Invitation for 20:00 means in German Time 20:30, if you want to arrive early... And there are a lot more funny stories.

This is a hilarious experience in America, because in public life it's expected to be on time for things, but in private life it feels like 60% of people are right on time types and the other 40% are half an hour late is a little early. It varies friend group to friend group and family to family, leading sometimes to confusion. We're "missing" the cultural norm and I think we'd be better off if we just chose one or the other. It doesn't help that this likely varies region to region, with my experience being that New England and the places New Englanders settled, like the upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest, are a little more on time.
