ill save you 9 mins: he doesn't use a bike lock because he doesn't leave it unattended. Unfortunately, if you using this as a commuting vehicle to the store or to work, this isn't viable.
I never left my bike out of sight, except for when I go to the local market to shop. I would lock it up with Kryptonite New York City lock; I also carried at least the thick yellow Kryptonite cable to loop around the wheels and frame, added a thin tether cable for the saddle. So far, the bike has been very secured for the past 2+ years. Unfortunately, my bike was stolen not outside but from someone breaking into our storage unit where I kept it at night! - - - With my new bike arriving shortly, I have already prepared with new Kryptonite City lock (the old one was stolen along with the bike!), rated at 9/10, a 5mm folding metal lock as secondary along with more cables to secure pretty much everything removable on it! The weight would be no problem as I simply store them in the rack pack that comes with the bike. I will also be buying bike insurance as I found out my Allstate homeowner insurance DOES NOT cover ebikes!!! It would readily cover a regular bike if stolen but not an ebike, something I did not know until after the fact; of cos i was peeved. - - - I had one of those inexpensive bike alarm you shown before and I Velcro it onto the underside of my saddle, unfortunately, I found it a bit cumbersome to use and the battery wore out quickly so i stopped using it, I will give it another try now with my new bike, for sure!!! - - - Finally, my new bike will be going inside my home every night, so no thieves could spend all night cutting thru whatever locking devices I might use! Folks, ebikes are very hot high end ticket items for thieves right now, even more so than regular bikes; for $300 a year insurance, it's worth it to me! I will be copying down the registration number on the bike and take lots of pictures to keep on file!
When it comes to protecting a expensive bike I think 50 pounds of bike locks is a acceptable compromise to ward off a thief. Never ever trust those thin flimsy cable bike locks a thief can cut through it in seconds with cable cutters. Unless you have like 50 of them. What you need to consider the stronger the lock more time it will take for a thief to bust through it. What you need to add is time. More locks and stronger locks = more time.
14mm boronium with titanium wires running through. Or whatever the best metal combo to make it as time consuming as possible to cut according to experts on the subject.

Great Video again! That's funny now that I have my Rad I don't let it out of my sight! People always compliment me and my wife as we ride. I brought the bike alarm system as well before my bike arrived and I love that it works really good! I keep my bike in my garage and I use 2 locks and set the alarm. This bike has given me and my Wifey new life! LOL
I have the same chain lock but a bit longer for my Radrunner that I keep wrapped around the downtube. I also have an Abus Ulock I mounted under the rear rack. The one time I used the locks was when I got a flat tire far from home without tire repair stuff on hand. I locked the bike up, took a Lyft ride home and drove my vehicle back to my bike.
I have a new york chain and a new york mini but I been looking at those abus folding locks just to have one mounted on the bike without carrying the heavy new york locks all the time.
Hi, thanks enjoyed the vid. I bought a new bike last week, and with it a 5 euro chain / plastic lock, to lock within view. Ordered a 1.5kg u -lock on amazon with an alarm similar to yours in loudness etc and its worked great since I have been back at work. 41veuro- money well spent.
The one thing you should get, is a Jones Loop handlebar. (nothing to do with security, just comfort and bad assness.) I like the alarm. I also make sure, I do not leave bike out of sight.
Lots of bad reviews on the Kryptonite locks being difficult to use. I use 3 locks. All Kryptonite U-lock, a chain & a long Kryptonite cable. I have an alarm & I think it's great. It scares off all but the most talented thieves. I wanted multiple ways to protect my bike, even though I think most thieves in my area are just opportunitic & not too bright. Probably in the stealing-clothes-in-the- laundromat types. Not having a routine is really important. Thanks for the video.
Takes about 2 seconds with cable snips to snip your cable locks and the folding lock a good solid hammer strike can dislodge the rivets holding the folding lock together. The best locks are those thick square chain locks. They would need a angle grinder to get through the chain lock and it would take about 20-30 seconds or so. Also a very good U lock which also would need a angle grinder to get through. I say the more locks the more time your going to have for a real thief to get through.
I already had a Kryptonite U-lock, but it was too small for the RadMini 4. I now use two locks; A level 4 Master 10 mm thick cable lock for light use, or a large level 5 Bell U-lock with extension cable for more serious protection. The Master lock key is finicky once in a while, but I think some oil will fix that. My problem is that few stores around us have bike racks.
I have a Hiplok. I highly recommend it if you want a heavy chain but don't want to carry it on your bike. I also have a 18mm D lock with a 1.8m 14mm cable and a cheapish cable lock for the front tyre. I commute daily into London and use all 3 locks. It's a bit of a pain but better than losing your bike.
I have an idea you might be interested in reading. I don't know if you want to use locks or anything, but this vid and some others made me think of this. It's a combination of two things. One is that you can rig an alarm so it goes off it someone tries to mess with the lock, by putting the lock (chain and everything) under something, like a covering of some kind. Put the alarm on the covering. So no one can even try to cut the lock without first triggering the alarm. The other part is that the metal chain could be covered with thick padding, like being wrapped in a towel. This could make the metal chain hard to reach with a tool like bolt cutters and maybe would mess up an angle grinder. Maybe if these were done, it could beat thieves.
I like using a disc brake lock. At least then, no one can roll it away. My bike is 70 pounds, so it makes it hard for someone to carry it home without a car
I absolutely agree! I have an alarm disc lock! And the remote that was shown in Citizens video as well as a Pinhead lock (which is virtually un-pickable! I highly recommend one.) ad well as a CABLE and a Kryptonite! Cant be too careful! ( I'm also waiting for a "Boomerang" GPS AND Alarm to arrive!
Absolutely! I have 4 locks in total and of various key types! In that way they have to carry several different tools around and it wouldn't be easy! I also bought the alarm that was shown here on Citizencycle as it was only 20 bucks on Amazon and it really screams! The disc lock I have was upgraded to an alarm as well. If I accidentally forget it, when the lock turns, the alarm goes off and reminds me! Lol
I have a new ebike that's $4K bone stock. I'll have 2 locks; one frame/café lock and noose chain just for situations where the bike is in sight and I'm not away from it for long, and the other will be an Abus u-lock that has a much more secure locking cylinder inside than all Kryptonite locks use, in cases where I'm away longer and the bike is not in view. After watching recent YT videos of countless bike lock types, it's amazing how easy most of them are to pick, never mind cutting through them.
I too will be receiving a $4K ebike in a few weeks. It comes with a café lock so possibly I'll go with your plan and purchase the additional AXA chain add-on. But where did you arrive at the idea that ABUS locks are more secure for picking over Kryptonite?
@@kippywylie Not all ABUS locks are more pick resistant, but the "Lock Picking Lawyer" on RUclips praised the ABUS X-Plus lock cylinder cores in particular. Look for one that is "X-Plus" for pick resistance, and a U lock that requires cutting through both sides. Overall, it's about how much of a PITA you make stealing the bike.
Good review. I use the Abus Granite X-Plus when in my garage and the Abus Bordo Big Alarm for locking the bike to a solid object when at a distant location. And make sure your homeowners insurance has you covered.
Abus locks are the best. I ordered a framelock with chain from Germany last month and got it in under a week in perfect packaging. Better than Amazon Prime delivery!
That's always my first thought too. I don't leave my bike alone anywhere. I ride downtown or some other places where I might lock it up but it will ALWAYS be in might sight.
I bought the Juiced bike alarm/horn combo. I have the Kryptonite 001706 48' Keeper 712 Integrated Chain Lock for locking right outside my door, and the ABUS 1060/170 Granit CityChain X-Plus Chain lock, Black, 67-inch for locking it in my house. You should see that monster! I have never locked it up any place that I have gone. I keep it real close to me just like you!
I never leave mine anywhere unattended. But I also have the same Kryptonite series 4 that you do just in the event I have to be away from it. It is a bit finicky, but there is no substitute for its security. u-locks can be easily had with a grinder or bolt cutters, cables are useless, and alarms make noise that no one pays attention to. The chain is the toughest to defeat even under ideal circumstances.
You can use the finder button if it does get stolen in a park or somewhere. Where a thief may have just taken it and may be riding it around. If you forgot to arm the alarm. Just a thought.

I have the basic cable lock. I added my bike as a separate policy to my insurance for 212.00 a year, full replacement, zero deductible. Just insure it and enjoy traveling.
Hope you still have that kryptonite chain lock , it's one of the best chains locks around and unless the theif uses a grinder/ a very large bolt cutter or he is lock pick lawyer then should be safe coupled with that alarm and GPS with a shock sensor built in to notify you that the bike is being tampered with.
I built a sweet e-mtb out of my old Cannondale and used the same don't let it out of my sight method even with 2 Kryptonite horseshoe locks and a cable. My final resort for security in my big city was to build a much cheaper electric city bike. If I take the battery & packs with me what I leave behind is worth under $600 ($109 Amazon bike & $450 BBS02). My general rule is lock the frame to a stationary object and both wheels to the frame. Also lock the seat if you have a quick release post. There's no such thing as "safe" so the only option is to make your bike the biggest PITA to steal of any other bikes around.

That West biking lock still might be better than a cable! Having something with you always could save you if you pop into a gas station or store or coffee shop for a few minutes or a half a minute for something. Crimes of opportunity are a thing and don't usually involve tools like bolt cutters or... Your Kryptonite experience is, besides an argument for an ABUS, or other brand, an argument for having security chain with a big good padlock that could be swapped out if needed instead of a built in one, Kryptonite even makes one like that or a good D or U lock might be a better idea. Some are quite good. There is a rating system out there, gold, diamond etcetera...thoseheing the top two tiers. By the way a lot of bikes are stolen while people are trying to look at it, keep an eye on it from a short distance or through a window...it's a thing! Some thieves won't care if you see them, and one moment where you are interacting with a cashier or something is enough... I mean people say this has happened to them and even if the bike was just locked to itself so it couldn't be ridden away with a not very impressive lock that would have saved them! A lot of bike thefts are based on opportunity and don't involve bolt cutters or other tools so to not lock it at all is foolish. I just left it for half a minute is the beginning of a sad story. Expensive e-bikes are making thieves more bold. What makes you think some of them care if you see them ride off through a window? Can you run faster than your bike? Are you ready to fight any and all miscreants? Will you get the chance? Will they be wearing a mask? Are you sure the police care about your bike theft? Do you really think they'll have you identify suspects? Do you think they'll assemble a line up like in a movie? Something easy and kind of secure is worth it even for a quick minute! Foldylocks, ABUS, Litelock, Seatylock there are good companies out there besides Kryptonite. I encourage you to look into it. For you maybe you can find a lighter but easy to use option that still can interfere with at least certain types of theft. The U lock, Mason is good but light weight as one example. It can go over the frame to a bike rack and through a chain or cable and is pretty good. Look into it more I'd suggest. On RUclips there is a channel: bikelockwiki, start there. There are stronger locks than the Mason but it's a good value for the price and weight. The weight mattering more for normal bikers as opposed to e-bikers. You can buy security chain separately, usually 5/16" thick links is sufficient and works with many D or U locks or serious padlocks...
Think you're right, you spend this kinda dough on a bike you don't want it out of your site but I think the alarm gives the most peace of mind for the cost, a lock just reduces range but I have a folding one just in case need to make a quick stop.
i regret not buying a top line lock from day one, rather than trying to save a bit of money. Now it is very clear to me what lock i should have bought for my Radrunner - a LiteLok X1. Tere are a couple of better ones, but they are twice the price, and the X1 has really good grinder resistance for the price - you talking about maybe 3 minutes to get through it with a battery grinder - which is sufficient to make the vast majority of "professional" bike thieves move on and find another victim. The cost in the region of $160 i think, or £150 uk

It's been 2 years since you made this, and now the thieves' tool of choice is a battery-powered angle grinder that will go through your foldylock and cable in less than ten seconds...it might take 20 seconds for that beefy orange Kryptonite chain (although Kryptonite *does* offer a warranty to replace your bike for something like $30/year). Those not brazen enough to carry a noisy angle grinder will have a nut splitter in one pocket for the foldylocks and a big pair of bolt cutters under their jacket for the cables and chains under 13mm. Hell, they'll even carry 4' bolt cutters out in the open now. I'm wondering if you've upgraded your locks, and if you'd like to do an updated video about this?
I deliver for Uber on my Himiway step through, I bought a wireless alarm like yours and where do you think I can best put this alarm on my bike? I even thought of putting it under my bike seat, the seat will trigger the alarm if someone takes the seat, and the bike too I guess. But if you can suggest a good place to put this, hidden or not hidden not sure. Great videos by the way, more Himiway lol
i just have mine mounted to the downtube going from seat to bottom bracket. there is not really anywhere to hide it on a bicycle. that thing is loud too!

But I also use a lock from ABUS it has a high pitched alarm built into the lock and it's foldable. It's it's really nice on the rad Rover ,people always ask me what it is, if it's a microphone or something because it looks too terrific and a part of the bike. really nice. @@sobebikes3225 Yes the spokeskins are time-consuming and a pain to put on. I usually getting them started on each end and then work toward the middle. When you reach the point where spokes cross it's very tight, I use one hand to separate the spokes and the other hand to twist the skin, you'll see what I mean. I've also heard if you soak them in hot water it makes them softer and easier to work with but I've never tried it.

been watching your videos but I'm so old school and I need help. I have $2000 for an ebike and really need your help finding something. I think I need 750 watts, with fenders, head and tail light with a rear bike rack. I think I'd also like to have hydraulic brakes. I don''t necessarily care about brand names but I would like to have decent range and torque because I plan to use it on hike trails, beaches and some road (gravel). I wish I could just walk into a store and buy something from someone who I can ask questions of and walk out with my new bike. Any help would be appreciated. The problem is, if you're using your e-bike as your main mode of transportation (as many people do), it's just impossible to never leave it alone. It's like saying never park your car, that way it'll never get stolen. Right but... what's the point then. It's tough, I mean you really can't have a bike that looks too nice, you can't have anything fancy on it that can be stripped (unless you can take it with you), you need to have a super tough U-lock, a secondary lock for the front wheel, and then some anti-theft GPS/alarm system, and then also perhaps insurance. And every time you leave it alone, you gotta take the battery with you, so you basically have to carry a backpack at all times. A bike like this RadRover loaded with a lot of fancy attachments is practically unusable for commuting or for running errands or for going out with friends etc. It'll get stripped and probably stolen on day one. A thief will take an angle grinder to this thing in the middle of the day on a busy street, it'll be worth the risk.
I am thinking of a frame lock, a dutch bike lock. I wonder if there is one that will fit. Do Rad bikes have a mounting point? I will have to look into that. Combining that with a cable type lock.

Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can text you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything happens, time is the most critical factor!
Throw the 2 gimmick locks away. Lube the big chain locks key cylinder with lock lube. Mine was the same way until i lubed it. Like you, my bike is never out of site.
That Kriptonite chain lock can be cut with a hydraulic bolt cutter. I had my bike stolen using it. It was defeated silently in a campground with me sleeping fifteen feet away.
I found that the best security is: to get a Kripto U-lock with extra cable, bike alarm/remote, and rainproof bike cover, non-see-through, Also, park in an open area, easily visible.
You can put in a GPS unit. They are micro now and the batteries last years and you can recharge them too. Look on ALIEXPRESS. You can put them in the handlebars or somewhere hard to get to but east to charge up. Then you can hunt them down and........

@@Admin... ... They are NOT realtime tracking and they work with bluetooth along with 'other' such GPS owners; there were lots of limitations involved. I looked into that but it would only show where a stolen bike MIGHT have been, if it was stolen and moved about, it's near impossible to track.
Best form of bike security is seeing your bike in your line of sight at all times, when outdoors. Any potential bike thief will not get your bike away quick enough, before you are on him or her in seconds. One or two high security bike chain locks around the frame and wheels and tied to a solid structure or bike rack is perfect to deter most opportunist bike thieves. A professional bike thief with a portable disk cutter will still have to cut through both locks before he has control of the bike. That will take time and before that happens you would be on him. That's the highest form of security outdoors when locking down bikes.
MZS Tuning mirrors from Amazon. However the company recently changed the design and instead of a rubber insert that goes in the handlebars they're using aluminum and it doesn't work anymore, if you buy a pair, search for a pair with the rubber insert.
Cable locks only invite thieves to try their hand at breaking them. I used one just to secure my battery to the bike as I use 2 - D locks for the bike itself. Last week, some thief tried to steal my battery, but he only managed to scratch the crap out of the frame of my bike. I am buying an alarm (or 2) and building a cage to wrap around the integrated battery so that this never happens again. I will also make a sign to let thieves know not to touch the bike or it's going to get very loud!

You should lose the cable, you’re going to be VERY mad at yourself if you use it for an unexpected stop and it gets taken. The Kryptonite probably just needs to have the working parts lubricated with “Finish line” Teflon lubricant. (It’s what Kryptonite recommends). That good Kryptonite is a great lock.

If possible, remove battery and take battery with you. I’ll throw mine in my backpack while I’m shopping. Also, use AT LEAST 2 locks. All the extra little precautions add up and can feel like a pain sometimes, but that is part of what you sign up for when you own and ride an awesome (and expensive) bike. i use a larger version of the Kryptonite Evolution. The problem your having with the lock is that you need to reset all the cylinders to unlock it so you have to wiggle it back and forth to get all of them reset, once you have the key all the way in and have reset the cylinders you can open and close the lock it is one of the harder locks to pick (but no lock is unpick able) . With the longer version it goes through the rear wheel, frame, and front wheel. I also registered it on www.bikeregister.com/ your frame has a serial number on the front. this way if it does get stolen police have a chance of getting it back to you. I have been commuting with mine and they don't let you bring bikes in the building. But i do agree keeping it with you is the best way to keep it from getting stolen.
I have a friend who used that same exact Kriptonite integrated chain lock that you have to lock up his BMX. Didn't work! The thief was carrying a hydraulic bolt cutter in the middle of the night when his bike was stolen. You should switch to the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit U-Lock to protect your most valuable investment because it's only a matter of time before you encounter clever thief who also carries a hydraulic bolt cutter once you have em locked up outside.
I've looked into insurance as a part of my SECURITY guards, and I find that it is just not economically feasible! My car insurance would be only a hundred more for the year and that just isnt right! I'll continue looking for affordable alternatives....
My insurance (personal item) when added to my homeowner’s policy (low deductible as well) is 1% of the value. So I am insuring 40k for $400/year. My bikes are also chained locked (12mm chain) inside my garage.
All of this "I don't let it out of my site" stuff is fine until you have to leave it to go on an emergency restroom run. You can't watch it through a store or restaurant bathroom.
I have a for sale sign on my bike that says, Ebike for sale cheap needs new motor ,derailleur and frame is bent but if your strong it can be pedaled. Best offer over $200 a phony phone number. So far it works. I left it in a nyc park and watched it for over an hour I did make the sign bilingual for the non English speaking thieves
no one is stealing your bike if you have a litelok...unless they have 6 extra cutting wheels, replacement batteries and 15 minutes of uninterrupted patience.
Dang! Almost $3k into it!? I know you bought the bike years back, but for those watching this now, you could get a Biktrix Juggernaut Ultra with torque, mid drive, 1000w motor for $3k. Could also upgrade the battery at various prices as well to suit your range needs
Yes, was my first ebike, I chose to upgrade instead of dish out another 3k for another bike. I think a lot of folks are in the same boat as me. I may end up buying another better bike eventually though.

What I don't like about most other ebikes is they have a thumb throttle and some are on the left side. I think Biktrix has that. I have to have a twist throttle on the right side. Too bad cause I like the Biktrix.
Having just recently purchased my bike...like you, I am PARANOID about somebody stealing it!-lol...(Maybe Habitual Worry Wart?!).....Anyway, bike shop sold me Bullox U-bolt w/4 ft. cable & purchased 2 additional 4-ft Rottweiler OnGuard Armored Locks. WHEN I go out, the U-bolt goes thru pedal housing, blocking rotation & Rottweiler's go thru front & back wheel. I try to park as close to bike rack, or post, as possible so the back cable encircles rack or pos. That alarm system could be last piece in my bike locks puzzle!-lol
I'm in the same boat. Ya just gotta stay with your bike. It's the most unfortunate cost of ownership for any cool ebike. I thought I'd be roll'n round town doing my errands and stuff but there is no way I can go in most place for any length of time. That's lame. I hope cities and companies just start putting in bike lockers or something. BUT I love just rolling around and check'n stuff out. I have the same mods but on a '19 mini.
Goober, you getting snipped. U-lock should be your first main lock. Cable or chain locks are ok for holding ONLY wheels to bike frame. Many people call cable locks gummy locks, b/c of cute coating on cable. The people who steal bikes call them dummy locks.
I'm looking at a fat wheel bike and to have a alarm built in it costs $130.00 extra. Besides costing more then the one you got the built in one is not as loud. Looks like I will get 2 , one for my recumbent trike and one for the new Fat bike. By the way remember the old saying , " Locks are only for Honest people ". After a Law Enforcement career and finally retiring I can say there is more truth in that then BS.
Wow that's a lot of locks! I steer clear of the disc locks, I used one on my motorcycle, forgot I had it on there, tried to move the bike and bent the disc.
As a retired Police Officer and Avid Cyclist, I always encourage people to use more than one lock (3 is best) and of various types of key ways and materials. ANY cable ( unless it's made by ABUS and VERY THICK) can be cut in SECONDS. U Locks with double shackle locking are best, but can be cut with a grinder in 15 minutes, unless they are tempered, thicker brands. ONGUARD VIA are affordable good locks, that come with a DETERENT cable for your wheels. Motorcycle disclocks WITH AN ALARM, are good as long as you use a reminder cable! The best advice was given here by Citizen Cycle : DONT GIVE THEM AN OPPORTUNITY! Keep it in sight and secure it properly. Dont leave it for long. GPS and Vibration sensors are a must!

I never left my bike out of sight, except for when I go to the local market to shop. I would lock it up with Kryptonite New York City lock; I also carried at least the thick yellow Kryptonite cable to loop around the wheels and frame, added a thin tether cable for the saddle. So far, the bike has been very secured for the past 2+ years. Unfortunately, my bike was stolen not outside but from someone breaking into our storage unit where I kept it at night!

With my new bike arriving shortly, I have already prepared with new Kryptonite City lock (the old one was stolen along with the bike!), rated at 9/10, a 5mm folding metal lock as secondary along with more cables to secure pretty much everything removable on it! The weight would be no problem as I simply store them in the rack pack that comes with the bike. I will also be buying bike insurance as I found out my Allstate homeowner insurance DOES NOT cover ebikes!!! It would readily cover a regular bike if stolen but not an ebike, something I did not know until after the fact; of cos i was peeved.

I had one of those inexpensive bike alarm you shown before and I Velcro it onto the underside of my saddle, unfortunately, I found it a bit cumbersome to use and the battery wore out quickly so i stopped using it, I will give it another try now with my new bike, for sure!!!

Finally, my new bike will be going inside my home every night, so no thieves could spend all night cutting thru whatever locking devices I might use! Folks, ebikes are very hot high end ticket items for thieves right now, even more so than regular bikes; for $300 a year insurance, it's worth it to me! I will be copying down the registration number on the bike and take lots of pictures to keep on file!
Electric scooter is much better investment than ebike because bike thieves don't target scooter owning a electric scooter is peace if mind .

When it comes to protecting a expensive bike I think 50 pounds of bike locks is a acceptable compromise to ward off a thief. Never ever trust those thin flimsy cable bike locks a thief can cut through it in seconds with cable cutters. Unless you have like 50 of them. What you need to consider the stronger the lock more time it will take for a thief to bust through it. What you need to add is time. More locks and stronger locks = more time.
14mm boronium with titanium wires running through. Or whatever the best metal combo to make it as time consuming as possible to cut according to experts on the subject.

I brought the bike alarm system as well before my bike arrived and I love that it works really good! I keep my bike in my garage and I use 2 locks and set the alarm. This bike has given me and my Wifey new life! LOL
I have the same chain lock but a bit longer for my Radrunner that I keep wrapped around the downtube. I also have an Abus Ulock I mounted under the rear rack. The one time I used the locks was when I got a flat tire far from home without tire repair stuff on hand. I locked the bike up, took a Lyft ride home and drove my vehicle back to my bike.
Great example of getting stranded, didn't think of that. Also under rear rack is a good discreet mounting spot.

Hi, thanks enjoyed the vid. I bought a new bike last week, and with it a 5 euro chain / plastic lock, to lock within view. Ordered a 1.5kg u -lock on amazon with an alarm similar to yours in loudness etc and its worked great since I have been back at work. 41veuro- money well spent.

The one thing you should get, is a Jones Loop handlebar. (nothing to do with security, just comfort and bad assness.) I like the alarm. I also make sure, I do not leave bike out of sight.
Lots of bad reviews on the Kryptonite locks being difficult to use. I use 3 locks. All Kryptonite U-lock, a chain & a long Kryptonite cable. I have an alarm & I think it's great. It scares off all but the most talented thieves. I wanted multiple ways to protect my bike, even though I think most thieves in my area are just opportunitic & not too bright. Probably in the stealing-clothes-in-the- laundromat types. Not having a routine is really important. Thanks for the video.
Takes about 2 seconds with cable snips to snip your cable locks and the folding lock a good solid hammer strike can dislodge the rivets holding the folding lock together. The best locks are those thick square chain locks. They would need a angle grinder to get through the chain lock and it would take about 20-30 seconds or so. Also a very good U lock which also would need a angle grinder to get through. I say the more locks the more time your going to have for a real thief to get through.
I already had a Kryptonite U-lock, but it was too small for the RadMini 4. I now use two locks; A level 4 Master 10 mm thick cable lock for light use, or a large level 5 Bell U-lock with extension cable for more serious protection. The Master lock key is finicky once in a while, but I think some oil will fix that.
My problem is that few stores around us have bike racks.

I have a Hiplok. I highly recommend it if you want a heavy chain but don't want to carry it on your bike. I also have a 18mm D lock with a 1.8m 14mm cable and a cheapish cable lock for the front tyre. I commute daily into London and use all 3 locks. It's a bit of a pain but better than losing your bike.
I have an idea you might be interested in reading. I don't know if you want to use locks or anything, but this vid and some others made me think of this.
It's a combination of two things. One is that you can rig an alarm so it goes off it someone tries to mess with the lock, by putting the lock (chain and everything) under something, like a covering of some kind. Put the alarm on the covering. So no one can even try to cut the lock without first triggering the alarm.
The other part is that the metal chain could be covered with thick padding, like being wrapped in a towel. This could make the metal chain hard to reach with a tool like bolt cutters and maybe would mess up an angle grinder.
Maybe if these were done, it could beat thieves.

I like using a disc brake lock. At least then, no one can roll it away. My bike is 70 pounds, so it makes it hard for someone to carry it home without a car

Absolutely! I have 4 locks in total and of various key types! In that way they have to carry several different tools around and it wouldn't be easy! I also bought the alarm that was shown here on Citizencycle as it was only 20 bucks on Amazon and it really screams! The disc lock I have was upgraded to an alarm as well. If I accidentally forget it, when the lock turns, the alarm goes off and reminds me! Lol

I have a new ebike that's $4K bone stock. I'll have 2 locks; one frame/café lock and noose chain just for situations where the bike is in sight and I'm not away from it for long, and the other will be an Abus u-lock that has a much more secure locking cylinder inside than all Kryptonite locks use, in cases where I'm away longer and the bike is not in view. After watching recent YT videos of countless bike lock types, it's amazing how easy most of them are to pick, never mind cutting through them.
I too will be receiving a $4K ebike in a few weeks. It comes with a café lock so possibly I'll go with your plan and purchase the additional AXA chain add-on. But where did you arrive at the idea that ABUS locks are more secure for picking over Kryptonite?
@@kippywylie Not all ABUS locks are more pick resistant, but the "Lock Picking Lawyer" on RUclips praised the ABUS X-Plus lock cylinder cores in particular. Look for one that is "X-Plus" for pick resistance, and a U lock that requires cutting through both sides. Overall, it's about how much of a PITA you make stealing the bike.

Good review. I use the Abus Granite X-Plus when in my garage and the Abus Bordo Big Alarm for locking the bike to a solid object when at a distant location. And make sure your homeowners insurance has you covered.

for locking right outside my door, and the ABUS 1060/170 Granit CityChain X-Plus Chain lock, Black, 67-inch for locking it in my house. You should see that monster! I have never locked it up any place that I have gone. I keep it real close to me just like you!

I never leave mine anywhere unattended. But I also have the same Kryptonite series 4 that you do just in the event I have to be away from it. It is a bit finicky, but there is no substitute for its security. u-locks can be easily had with a grinder or bolt cutters, cables are useless, and alarms make noise that no one pays attention to. The chain is the toughest to defeat even under ideal circumstances.

I have the basic cable lock. I added my bike as a separate policy to my insurance for 212.00 a year, full replacement, zero deductible. Just insure it and enjoy traveling.
Hope you still have that kryptonite chain lock , it's one of the best chains locks around and unless the theif uses a grinder/ a very large bolt cutter or he is lock pick lawyer then should be safe coupled with that alarm and GPS with a shock sensor built in to notify you that the bike is being tampered with.

I built a sweet e-mtb out of my old Cannondale and used the same don't let it out of my sight method even with 2 Kryptonite horseshoe locks and a cable. My final resort for security in my big city was to build a much cheaper electric city bike. If I take the battery & packs with me what I leave behind is worth under $600 ($109 Amazon bike & $450 BBS02).
My general rule is lock the frame to a stationary object and both wheels to the frame. Also lock the seat if you have a quick release post. There's no such thing as "safe" so the only option is to make your bike the biggest PITA to steal of any other bikes around.

That West biking lock still might be better than a cable! Having something with you always could save you if you pop into a gas station or store or coffee shop for a few minutes or a half a minute for something. Crimes of opportunity are a thing and don't usually involve tools like bolt cutters or...
Your Kryptonite experience is, besides an argument for an ABUS, or other brand, an argument for having security chain with a big good padlock that could be swapped out if needed instead of a built in one, Kryptonite even makes one like that or a good D or U lock might be a better idea. Some are quite good. There is a rating system out there, gold, diamond etcetera...thoseheing the top two tiers.
By the way a lot of bikes are stolen while people are trying to look at it, keep an eye on it from a short distance or through a window...it's a thing!
Some thieves won't care if you see them, and one moment where you are interacting with a cashier or something is enough...
I mean people say this has happened to them and even if the bike was just locked to itself so it couldn't be ridden away with a not very impressive lock that would have saved them!
A lot of bike thefts are based on opportunity and don't involve bolt cutters or other tools so to not lock it at all is foolish. I just left it for half a minute is the beginning of a sad story.
Expensive e-bikes are making thieves more bold. What makes you think some of them care if you see them ride off through a window? Can you run faster than your bike? Are you ready to fight any and all miscreants? Will you get the chance? Will they be wearing a mask? Are you sure the police care about your bike theft? Do you really think they'll have you identify suspects? Do you think they'll assemble a line up like in a movie?
Something easy and kind of secure is worth it even for a quick minute!
Foldylocks, ABUS, Litelock, Seatylock there are good companies out there besides Kryptonite.
I encourage you to look into it.
For you maybe you can find a lighter but easy to use option that still can interfere with at least certain types of theft.
The U lock, Mason is good but light weight as one example.
It can go over the frame to a bike rack and through a chain or cable and is pretty good. Look into it more I'd suggest.

There are stronger locks than the Mason but it's a good value for the price and weight. The weight mattering more for normal bikers as opposed to e-bikers.
You can buy security chain separately, usually 5/16" thick links is sufficient and works with many D or U locks or serious padlocks...
Think you're right, you spend this kinda dough on a bike you don't want it out of your site but I think the alarm gives the most peace of mind for the cost, a lock just reduces range but I have a folding one just in case need to make a quick stop.

i regret not buying a top line lock from day one, rather than trying to save a bit of money. Now it is very clear to me what lock i should have bought for my Radrunner - a LiteLok X1. Tere are a couple of better ones, but they are twice the price, and the X1 has really good grinder resistance for the price - you talking about maybe 3 minutes to get through it with a battery grinder - which is sufficient to make the vast majority of "professional" bike thieves move on and find another victim. The cost in the region of $160 i think, or £150 uk

It's been 2 years since you made this, and now the thieves' tool of choice is a battery-powered angle grinder that will go through your foldylock and cable in less than ten seconds...it might take 20 seconds for that beefy orange Kryptonite chain (although Kryptonite *does* offer a warranty to replace your bike for something like $30/year). Those not brazen enough to carry a noisy angle grinder will have a nut splitter in one pocket for the foldylocks and a big pair of bolt cutters under their jacket for the cables and chains under 13mm. Hell, they'll even carry 4' bolt cutters out in the open now.

I deliver for Uber on my Himiway step through, I bought a wireless alarm like yours and where do you think I can best put this alarm on my bike? I even thought of putting it under my bike seat, the seat will trigger the alarm if someone takes the seat, and the bike too I guess. i just have mine mounted to the downtube going from seat to bottom bracket. there is not really anywhere to hide it on a bicycle. that thing is loud too!

@@sobebikes3225 Yes the spokeskins are time-consuming and a pain to put on. I usually getting them started on each end and then work toward the middle. When you reach the point where spokes cross it's very tight, I use one hand to separate the spokes and the other hand to twist the skin, you'll see what I mean. I've also heard if you soak them in hot water it makes them softer and easier to work with but I've never tried it.

been watching your videos but I'm so old school and I need help. I have $2000 for an ebike and really need your help finding something. I think I need 750 watts, with fenders, head and tail light with a rear bike rack. I think I'd also like to have hydraulic brakes. I don''t necessarily care about brand names but I would like to have decent range and torque because I plan to use it on hike trails, beaches and some road (gravel). I wish I could just walk into a store and buy something from someone who I can ask questions of and walk out with my new bike. Any help would be appreciated. The problem is, if you're using your e-bike as your main mode of transportation (as many people do), it's just impossible to never leave it alone. It's like saying never park your car, that way it'll never get stolen. Right but... what's the point then. It's tough, I mean you really can't have a bike that looks too nice, you can't have anything fancy on it that can be stripped (unless you can take it with you), you need to have a super tough U-lock, a secondary lock for the front wheel, and then some anti-theft GPS/alarm system, and then also perhaps insurance. And every time you leave it alone, you gotta take the battery with you, so you basically have to carry a backpack at all times. A bike like this RadRover loaded with a lot of fancy attachments is practically unusable for commuting or for running errands or for going out with friends etc. It'll get stripped and probably stolen on day one. A thief will take an angle grinder to this thing in the middle of the day on a busy street, it'll be worth the risk.

Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can text you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything happens, time is the most critical

Throw the 2 gimmick locks away. Lube the big chain locks key cylinder with lock lube. Mine was the same way until i lubed it. Like you, my bike is never out of site.
That Kriptonite chain lock can be cut with a hydraulic bolt cutter. I had my bike stolen using it. It was defeated silently in a campground with me sleeping fifteen feet away.

I found that the best security is: to get a Kripto U-lock with extra cable, bike alarm/remote, and rainproof bike cover, non-see-through, Also, park in an open area, easily visible.
You can put in a GPS unit. They are micro now and the batteries last years and you can recharge them too. Look on ALIEXPRESS. You can put them in the handlebars or somewhere hard to get to but east to charge up. Then you can hunt them down and........

@@Admin... ... They are NOT realtime tracking and they work with bluetooth along with 'other' such GPS owners; there were lots of limitations involved. I looked into that but it would only show where a stolen bike MIGHT have been, if it was stolen and moved about, it's near impossible to track.

Best form of bike security is seeing your bike in your line of sight at all times, when outdoors. Any potential bike thief will not get your bike away quick enough, before you are on him or her in seconds.
One or two high security bike chain locks around the frame and wheels and tied to a solid structure or bike rack is perfect to deter most opportunist bike thieves.
A professional bike thief with a portable disk cutter will still have to cut through both locks before he has control of the bike. That will take time and before that happens you would be on him. That's the highest form of security outdoors when locking down bikes.
It would be nice if the alarm would also send an alarm to your cell phone for when you are inside and cant hear it.

MZS Tuning mirrors from Amazon. However the company recently changed the design and instead of a rubber insert that goes in the handlebars they're using aluminum and it doesn't work anymore, if you buy a pair, search for a pair with the rubber insert.
Cable locks only invite thieves to try their hand at breaking them. I used one just to secure my battery to the bike as I use 2 - D locks for the bike itself. Last week, some thief tried to steal my battery, but he only managed to scratch the crap out of the frame of my bike.
I am buying an alarm (or 2) and building a cage to wrap around the integrated battery so that this never happens again. I will also make a sign to let thieves know not to touch the bike or it's going to get very loud!

You should lose the cable, you’re going to be VERY mad at yourself if you use it for an unexpected stop and it gets taken. The Kryptonite probably just needs to have the working parts lubricated with “Finish line” Teflon lubricant. (It’s what Kryptonite recommends). That good Kryptonite is a great lock.

Also, use AT LEAST 2 locks.
All the extra little precautions add up and can feel like a pain sometimes, but that is part of what you sign up for when you own and ride an awesome (and expensive) bike.

i use a larger version of the Kryptonite Evolution. The problem your having with the lock is that you need to reset all the cylinders to unlock it so you have to wiggle it back and forth to get all of them reset, once you have the key all the way in and have reset the cylinders you can open and close the lock it is one of the harder locks to pick (but no lock is unpick able) . With the longer version it goes through the rear wheel, frame, and front wheel. I also registered it on www.bikeregister.com/ your frame has a serial number on the front. this way if it does get stolen police have a chance of getting it back to you. I have been commuting with mine and they don't let you bring bikes in the building. But i do agree keeping it with you is the best way to keep it from getting stolen.

I have a friend who used that same exact Kriptonite integrated chain lock that you have to lock up his BMX. Didn't work! You should switch to the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit U-Lock to protect your most valuable investment because it's only a matter of time before you encounter clever thief who also carries a hydraulic bolt cutter once you have em locked up outside.
I've looked into insurance as a part of my SECURITY guards, and I find that it is just not economically feasible! My car insurance would be only a hundred more for the year and that just isnt right! I'll continue looking for affordable alternatives....
My insurance (personal item) when added to my homeowner’s policy (low deductible as well) is 1% of the value. So I am insuring 40k for $400/year. My bikes are also chained locked (12mm chain) inside my garage.

I have a for sale sign on my bike that says, Ebike for sale cheap needs new motor ,derailleur and frame is bent but if your strong it can be pedaled. Best offer over $200 a phony phone number. So far it works. I left it in a nyc park and watched it for over an hour I did make the sign bilingual for the non English speaking thieves

Dang! Almost $3k into it!? I know you bought the bike years back, but for those watching this now, you could get a Biktrix Juggernaut Ultra with torque, mid drive, 1000w motor for $3k. Could also upgrade the battery at various prices as well to suit your range needs
Yes, was my first ebike, I chose to upgrade instead of dish out another 3k for another bike. I think a lot of folks are in the same boat as me. I may end up buying another better bike eventually though.

What I don't like about most other ebikes is they have a thumb throttle and some are on the left side. I think Biktrix has that. I have to have a twist throttle on the right side. Too bad cause I like the Biktrix.

Having just recently purchased my bike...like you, I am PARANOID about somebody stealing it!-lol...(Maybe Habitual Worry Wart?!).....Anyway, bike shop sold me Bullox U-bolt w/4 ft. cable & purchased 2 additional 4-ft Rottweiler OnGuard Armored Locks. WHEN I go out, the U-bolt goes thru pedal housing, blocking rotation & Rottweiler's go thru front & back wheel. I try to park as close to bike rack, or post, as possible so the back cable encircles rack or pos. That alarm system could be last piece in my bike locks puzzle!-lol

I'm in the same boat. Ya just gotta stay with your bike. It's the most unfortunate cost of ownership for any cool ebike. I thought I'd be roll'n round town doing my errands and stuff but there is no way I can go in most place for any length of time. That's lame. I hope cities and companies just start putting in bike lockers or something. BUT I love just rolling around and check'n stuff out. I have the same mods but on a '19 mini.

Goober, you getting snipped. U-lock should be your first main lock. Cable or chain locks are ok for holding ONLY wheels to bike frame. Many people call cable locks gummy locks, b/c of cute coating on cable. The people who steal bikes call them dummy locks.
I'm looking at a fat wheel bike and to have a alarm built in it costs $130.00 extra. Besides costing more then the one you got the built in one is not as loud. Looks like I will get 2 , one for my recumbent trike and one for the new Fat bike. By the way remember the old saying , " Locks are only for Honest people ". After a Law Enforcement career and finally retiring I can say there is more truth in that then BS.

I use a Kryptonite Fahgeddaboudit and cable, a disc lock with alarm, a Pinhead city lock and a BOOMERANG GPS AND ALARM
Wow that's a lot of locks! I steer clear of the disc locks, I used one on my motorcycle, forgot I had it on there, tried to move the bike and bent the disc.
As a retired Police Officer and Avid Cyclist, I always encourage people to use more than one lock (3 is best) and of various types of key ways and materials. ANY cable ( unless it's made by ABUS and VERY THICK) can be cut in SECONDS. U Locks with double shackle locking are best, but can be cut with a grinder in 15 minutes, unless they are tempered, thicker brands. ONGUARD VIA are affordable good locks, that come with a DETERENT cable for your wheels. Motorcycle disclocks WITH AN ALARM, are good as long as you use a reminder cable! The best advice was given here by Citizen Cycle : DONT GIVE THEM AN OPPORTUNITY! Keep it in sight and secure it properly. Dont leave it for long. GPS and Vibration sensors are a must!
@@CitizenCycle925 Yes, if they are going to try and steal it, I'm not going to make it easy . ABUS locks are about as tough as they get, but PINHEAD CITY LOCK, is a force to be reckoned with! Its VIRTUALLY UNPICKABLE, and has a SOLID tempered core! 30 minutes with a grinder AT THE VERY LEAST! ( Not to mention the noise it would cause etc. And the other locks and GPS Alarm! )...
