Hi Leonila, here it is for you. Belizean Johnny Cakes 3 cups flour ½ tsp salt 2 tsp baking powder ¼ cup white sugar (I like mine on the sweeter side but you can use less sugar) ¼ cup shortening 1 ¼ cup coconut milk, warm Bake at 350F for 25-30 minutes. Broil for a few minutes until tops get brown. Makes 10 johnny cakes
You taught me fry jacks and these are next! Thank you for your time in making these videos. My family fell in love with Belize last summer and one of the things we miss is the food!
Hi Shirani. I just wanted to say that I really like your videos…. They’re very detailed and easy to follow. I also like that you go step by step and share your exact measurements. I’ve been following for a while and every new recipe I try is from you…. This is the first time I’m interacting by leaving this comment 😅
It’s so satisfying watching you knead the dough and cleaning the bowl, nothing left behind! Poking the Johnny cakes with the fork is very nostalgic for me as I’d get to do that when my grandmother would bake them 🥹 Thank you Shirani! 💜
To get it brown after you bake it, turn your oven to broil and put it in the bottom of the oven (broiler) for about 45 seconds to 1 minute. Stand right in front of the oven, don't move, don't walk off, it will get brown so fast. This also help keeping it from getting hard trying to baking it too long to get brown. By the way set your temperature to 350, and only bake your jonny cake for 20 to 25 minutes until the bottom brown, not the top, after this time , put it in your broiler to get the top brown. You will love your jonny cake try it. Same with bun, bread, powder bun and anything you want to get brown. Cut temperature down for desserts. I know some Belizeans love brown jonny cake and some a dem Belizean no like white jonny cake. Just a little pointer's, sorry... By the way your jonny cake, look so delicious and we'll made nice and round.
Thank you Sharini. OMG you’re heaven sent. I made the tortilla just the way you made them. I was so surprised that they came out great since it was my first time making them. I struggled alittle with kneading the dough but that’s ok. I will keep on trying. I will attempt to make Johnny cakes next. Thank you so much.
Your videos are wonderful and strangely soothing. You make cooking Belizean food look so easy. I love your bowl. Wish I had one from Belize. I remember my grandmother using a wooden one when she made bread, bun, johnnycake and powda bun. Thanks for the videos. Keep making them.

Wow thanks so much hon my Johnny cakes came out awesome thanks for teaching me thought I would never get the right recipe your a god sent belizean we are 🙏blessings to you
I tried this recipe this morning. It came out perfect soft and tasty. I didn’t add the sugar because I don’t like my Johnny cake sweet. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Belizean high five! You’re videos are very very good! I’m so glad you let the “kneading” play out so we can see how it’s done! That’s an important part and others fast forward or edit it shorter. Yours was perfect! Now I just need some avocado and eggs with it. Lol Fantastic job! 🇧🇿
So I'm back on this video....Everytime I feel to eat a Belizean bake bread...I always come here to watch over this video...so I wouldn't make no mistake in measurement 😅😅. By far the best, simple, explanation and preparation! They came out super moist n tasty. Thanks for sharing. 💋
I followed your recipe except I used Trader Joe's Organic Coconut Milk, not using the brand you mentioned as I'm boycotting, anyhow this was an easy to follow recipe and I must say they came out perfect per my Mumsie who is a Johnny Cake Queen. Thank you.
You are so welcome! That's awesome, I'm glad she approved 😊. I recently discovered the Trader Joe's coconut milk and love it but it's hard to find. Everytime I go there they are always out.
Hello! My grandma was from Corozal, so I've eaten this since ever! But now she left us a long time ago, thank you so much for this video!!! I like mine with the blue can butte and chocolate milkshake (Ovaltine)

Can it be done with like lala light milk or carnation or just water?
You can use any kind of milk you want in it. It will just change the taste a little bit.
Could I use regular milk??
Yes you can.
I don't have a broiler option I only have the small bottom door under the oven how can I get them brown mines came out white new to baking lol

You sure can.
Wow am so excited to click on each video sister please don't flee offended of me commenting you just so great with your hands
Glad to have you here. Thanks for watching 🙏🏽🥰
Hi. I dont have coconut milk.. what can I use instead?
Hi Karina, you can just use regular whole milk.
I would not use lard… geez…heart problems.
But I will be using all of the other ingredients to try this with a better option than lard.
How many minutes do you kneed to dough for?
I don't really time it but I would say about 5 minutes.
Okay, thanks very much. I made lastnight using your recipe and it came out perfect. Thanks a lot
