  • @KL0098
    @KL0098 3 месяца назад

    12:30 I think most agencies, organisms, governments, etc., are staffed with people who do ask what the opportunities and risks are. In fact, there are many governmental agencies and NGOs whose role is to pose those questions. The problem is that this is contextual rather than a liberal/conservative thing. Environmental agencies that warn about the risks of industry-caused pollution are asking what the risks are: are they listened to by politicians? I doubt it, because they were framed as liberal whinners.
    What about the social media like Google and Facebook: Haidt himself has come down hard on the American politicians who in the late '90s failed to legislate against Facebook and Google and whatnot, making them exempt from being sued for anything caused by their content; this, as Haidt now bemoans, has led to massive psychological problems among young people. At the time, it was liberals like Neil Postman who were warning against social media. Who paid heed in Washington?
    What about the invasion of Iraq? Many anti-terroism experts warned that Iraq did not have the fabled WMDs (as was later proven to be so), and invading it would only foster more terrorism (also true). Who listened to them in Washington? Nobody, because their position was framed as a "liberal" and "anti-American" and a sign of appeasement to terrorism.
    In these three situations - pollution, social media, war on terror - the risks were ignored because, I presume, making money in an unregulated market is a value widely defended by conservatives.
    So it's rather cynical to say that we need to have both liberals and conservatives. No! What we need is experts, and, more importantly, we need politicians who listen to experts and who form policies based on what the experts say! If the experts are experts and have any intellectual honesty, being liberal or conservative is irrelevant; they'll be led solely by the data and by the urge to inform according to their best capacity. That was the case with environmentalists and with the earliest critics of the internet. The rulers didn't care. That's the dilemma we face today. How to get rulers to make policy based on data from experts? I heard absolutely nothing from Haidt and Peterson liable to help solve this dilemma.

    Watching in April 2020 during COVID-19 and the question that comes is why is it that the people who want to open up more are generally fairly conservative and those that want the lockdown to continue are more progressive? I'd love to ask these two.
    Maybe since the virus is already in our borders, the more salient characteristic is risk tolerance?

    • @Huddie400
      @Huddie400 4 года назад +6

      I’d like to hear them discuss it too. Maybe - speculating here - conservatives want the safety, borders, & familiarity of the way life normally is, before Covid. And liberals are more flexible in the face of these changes, more willing to shift to masks, to staying home, and shifting to a new way of living if that’s what is necessary to resolve the problem.

    • @mattymatt6970

      I always thought it was the fact that conservatives think if you shut down, the economy crashes, which could have worse dangers than covid 19. while liberals think that keeping people healthy is more important, and we could pick up the economical damage after.

    • @jamiedorsey4167
      @jamiedorsey4167 3 года назад +4

      @@mattymatt6970 An analogy I like regarding conservatives vs progressives is that conservatives care more about the hive and progressives care more about the bees.
      So keeping the economy healthy is protecting the hive, which is important to the bees. On the other side though its the bees that actually build and strengthen the hive so keeping them healthy has an important value.

      There's a time and a place. Even the left couldn't have given equal rights to blacks back then. Or to women. In poorer times, societies have to be more regimented and hierarchical to preserve order and continuity. If all the illiterate bums had the vote in 1800, the US wouldn't have probably continued as it is today.
      And the only reason society became more accepting of black integration in the second half of the last century, was when it had enough resources for law enforcement and the justice system to keep order. That's why prosperity tends to liberalize attitudes. Whites always feared blacks to a degree or another. And prior to efficient justice system, mixing the two populations together would've led to just endless vigilante justice and mayhem.

      All Liberals are all the same. Whether it's Russian Communists, Cuban Communists, Nazi Socialists, Chinese Communists, North Korean Communists, Venezuelan Socialists, or American Democrats. The are all murderous, anti-religious zealots that will form gulags, concentration camps, death squads, secret police, etc, in order to kill off anyone who doesn't think like them. They also commonly have the mistaken notion that being religious is anti-science. They somehow forget (or are simply ignorant of) the fact Newton, and many of the greatest scientists of all time, were deeply religious people. These Liberals are the most intolerant people on Earth, unless you do weird or perverse things like trying to surgically replace genitals with that of the opposite sex, kill your unborn child, bondage sexual encounters, or taking part in incest. They fail to understand basic economic concepts, such as the benefit to group productivity that comes from incentives to work, such as raises or, even, simply making enough money to buy food. They seem to completely disassociate production incentives from positive economic growth, while assuming that giving some people handouts will have no effect on GDP or the availability of goods. They don't care if people of the USSR had to wait 8 years for cars or 3 days for bread - as long as everyone had to wait equally. Their vision of a perfect society is one in which we are all equally miserable and no one gets to directly enjoy the fruits of their own labor.
