Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

Also - we now carry a bag of every-sized fuses for just such an occasion after we blew the fuse on the water pump! Lifesavers

I love Yosemite. As a photographer, I was originally inspired by Ansel Adams, so Yosemite was kind of my Mecca. I've been there 5 or 6 times now. (All the way from Ohio) There's all this cool stuff out west that I'd love to photograph, and I'd prefer to drive there, but I can only take about a week off work at a time, and if it takes a week to drive there, that won't leave me any time when I get there. Planning flights and rental cars and the logistics of it all makes my head spin. I so much rather see the landscape pass by as I drive there and have my own vehicle to do it in. I want to see Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Grand Canyon next trip, but it would be nice to spend a few days at each spot. I just got back from Death Valley and then The Valley of Fire. After all the traffic, people, and scams of Las Vegas, I got up at 3:30am and drove to Zabriskie Point for sunrise which was amazing. After that I went driving to the Artists Pallet, then Devils Golf course and Badwater Basin. I didn't see much in the way of people for almost an hour, and it was amazing, lol. I saw no drone signs everywhere I went, but I didn't know they had a no filming thing even. That's horrible. I filmed a little bit on my phone but wish I filmed a lot more. I was focused on photos. Still have to edit it together. Beautiful footage here though, get some spare fuses when you hit town! Tern makes some excellent foldable e-bikes that are lighter and more reliable than the RAD's, if you feel like spending a bunch of money. Really, they're even lighter and more reliable if you take the "e" off the bike. :P Anyway, keep it up, thanks for bringing us along!

@@ChristianSchaffer Well I got around to editing what little footage I took. I cut in some of the pictures I took. I loved Death Valley though. My batteries all died by mid-afternoon, so I went back to Vegas for dinner; A little personal celebration for not having a drink in 1 year. (Not that it was a problem, but I figured health and finance *had* to improve without it) My favorite part there, was the near solitude. Next time I want to try astrophotography, I hear it gets darker than just about anywhere. Ansel was the best. He seemed like a super nice guy too. Never met him, but I've watched all the documentaries, and have many of his books. Anyone who can invent the zone system, then carry an 8x10 view camera up a mountain is pretty cool, ha.

Thank you for adding the link to support our outdoor public lands. Letters have been customized and sent along with a contribution. My father worked for the California State Park System for over 40 years. As kids we grew up in State Park Housing in Big Trees State Park and Big Basin State Park. I understand the importance of maintaining these state and federal lands so that our children and grand children can enjoy them. Big Basin is a prime example. The house i grew up in and the park i rode my bike in is now gone and destroyed by fire. Thank goodness I had the chance to take my son backpacking there the year before the fire. But so many young people have no idea of the beauty that's out there. We have to maintain the ability to film and explore so that more people can grow to appreciate our public lands.
I just got back from a week stay at North Pines in Yosemite! The waterfalls are absolutely roaring!!

Yes, another wonderful video and I do hope you get your electrical issues resolved. A tip, which I am so sure you have been told countless times now, is to have some spare fuses around for everything that needs on. Bigger tip, always know where you have them hidden. I speak from experience with that last tip! 😊

Beautiful...your living the dream life I would love to live. I'm a photographer now, almost went blind twice & ever since I discovered my love and passion and talent for it (told so by so many others) I have been trying to create the life I would love. I went on a 2 wk car life journey that ended in catastrophe so now, eventually, I'm hoping to get a van, a minivan, for now...at least I got great content...and the experience was cool too, definitely got a taste and want more! (My cat loved it too, he really adapted well to life on the road! lol).
I think if you can handle two weeks on the road and still love it, going full-time is a legit option. Stoked for you, enjoy that open road ☺️🙌🏻
