Roy is keeping in the long tradition of trumpet players who sang. Cats like Dizzy, and Kenny Dorham and Chet Baker and of course the granddaddy of them all Pops Armstrong. Long live the great jazz trumpet tradition and Brother Hargrove for continuing the lineage. Boppish regards!
Actually I was lucky enough to see Roy about 100 times -- at the Jazz Gallery for a decade, etc. He never gave less than his best, and I saw some shows with this band, or RH, or the classic quartet with Justin, Larry Willis, Gerald Cannon and Willie Jones III that were the kind where you flew up into the air. One night in particular --at the Highline, the Big Band played first, and then RH came on. It lasted about five hours, and I think the fire department had to come put the flames out!! At that gig, Jonathan Baptiste played keys for both bands. Without a single sheet of music. He incited the fire.
This performance by Roy Hargrove is an true picture of his musical gifts. To add he is singing, directing the band and playing his trumpeter. A magical performance. RIP my friend.
Jazz on a summer's day in Washington Square, an absolutely killing band led by the late great (but then oh-so-young) Roy Hargrove--a musician's musician who was somehow always a charismatic audience favorite too. Someone get me a time machine...
I'm just so grieving right now listening to him. RIP Roy. You'll make beautiful music with the angels in heaven. Thank you for giving me pleasure seeing your shows and listening to your great music.
The leaves of brown Came tumbling down, remember In September In the rain The sun went out just like a dying ember That September In the rain To every word of love I heard you whisper The raindrops seemed To play a sweet refrain Though spring is here To me, it's still September Ooh, that September In the rain To every word of love I heard you whisper The raindrops seemed to play a sweet refrain Though spring is here To me it's still September That September In the rain I said that September In the rain
Mr. Hargrove was a brilliant musician. This band just stomps like crazy. I never knew that Mr. Hargrove could sing. Is that the late and great Jerry Gonzalez on congas? Roy and Jerry gone too soon. Rest In Peace, Maestri.
these guys knock me out.this is a big loose swinging jazz outfit steaming along in the style of the master big bands.wat I would give to start again and join these guys oh boy memories.great stuff many thanks.
Oh me too but one lucky boy would've been so smitten with me and my lovin so he would've wrote me a song like Dizzy wrote Loraine oh yes child please! Rest singing jazz man Roy Hargrove
The members have changed a few, but ten years later they got the Grammy Award for Roy Hargrove Big Band, which is the same as the version on the Grammy album. The trumpet section in the Grammy version where Greg Gisbert got the lead is better, but the trumpet section at that time is also great. There I can see Darrent Barrett.
THE OTHER ALTO PLAYER IS JESSE DAVIS A FORCE THE RECKON WITH THE SOLIST ON ALTO IS A PROESSSOR OF MUSIC THINK JULILARD , ALL THE PLAYERS ARE IN THEIR FIFTIES NOW WOW THEY WERE REALLY YOUNG OF COURSE TIME RUNS IN A STRIGHT ARROW
Dear Lord ~ Please explain why you took Roy from us so early when you blessed him w incredible gifts? NOT GIFS. Why did you take him from our planet Earth? We need him back. Like now.
1:24. Sometimes you wonder how or why people take to music? Watch this lady, at a moment of horn-madness, when most would be mouthing, 'Wow!', or 'Woah', or 'Whoop whoop!', this lady casually slips a sweet into her mouth as if she is listening to the most boring public speech she has ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
