I shoot jpeg mostly because I don't want to spend most of my day editing my photos. I just nail the exposure (and WB) on the camera, maybe under or overexpose just a tiny bit, and have a hassle-free photographic process. Fuji's jpeg is decent enough that I can adjust it if I messed up a little.
Hi Omar, I just found this video which is so helpful. I have been shooting Fuji film for over a year now and have felt like I am the only one that isn't blown away by every Jpeg coming straight out the camera. Now I can see that many Jpegs do actually benefit from a light edit and you have shown some really great simple examples. Thanks for sharing !
Great video! Also a JPG shooter (Olympus produces great JPGs) ... I would rather spend hours with the camera, and minutes with post-processing. I find the current Photos app on MacOS and iOS is more than enough for the minimal editing I do.
That was brilliant. I like the Fuji system because of the film simulations but sometimes as you say the flatness is disappointing. I love colour too. I’ve got LR on my iPad but am very under confident using it so this video has been so helpful. I’ve only ever used the sliders before. I’m going to try the brush next. Thanks Omar.
@@MsMetal32 yeah for sure it gives more flexibility. However, the disadvantage is wasting heaps of time editing instead of going out there and shooting
@nd2170 well, if you getting paid thousands of dollars for a wedding, that's time well spent of your a hobbyist even more reason to shoot raw as you are not editing 100s of photos at a time
I appreciate this! So much hype and credit is given to full frame and RAW on RUclips that it robs people of just exploring the art of photography. Let's be honest: this had the best click-bait thumbnail on RUclips to date 🤣
A lot of RUclips photographers try and sell this "shoot raw" crap all the time. By all means shoot raw, but don't be afraid to shoot and edit jpegs if you're happy with the colours etc. Great video 🙏
That's so true, I got sick of them telling me to shoot raw, I have a fujifilm x100f I really love the film simulations in it and you can come up with nice recipes too, you are only able to do that if you shoot in jpeg and that's what I started doing.
Whats up, Omar Gonzales, NoFro knows Photo 😂😂 Loved these videos Omar. Still have five hours to go in work, and will be playing around with some of these tips later. Really great video!!
Fantastic lilttle tips; Omar. And I'm absolutely not saying this because I've been doing the exact same thing for the 4 years I've been shooting Fuji ^^. The thing with Fuji's Jpegs is that they got the same guy who was in charge of color science back in the days of designing all their various films... for their film simulations today ! Talk about consistency ! So obviously, he'd know a thing or 2 about color science. Like a lot of people before me, I fully trust his taste (especially in Astia, my sweet darling), and same as you, whenever I shoot straight in Jpeg, I make sure my exposure and white balance is right, and boom ! Good to go ! Only a few spices to make it just a tad bit more personal on my phone or comp, and voilà ! The cooking's all done ! Chef's kiss.
I have a new found love with the fuji film simulations. Many times a jpeg is enough and yes you can still edit the jpegs. But come on, let's be honest... How many viewers came to see Omar editing jpegs? I'M HERE FOR THE THUMBNAIL!
Excellent demonstration. When I'm shooting pro jobs and or when lighting is tough and results matter, I will always shoot RAW. For my own personal stuff, such as street photography etc. I prefer to shoot JPG - using the simulations with a minor process tweak if needed. Cameras are really good today. Digital has made leaps and bounds in the last 4+ years. I love the Fuji jpegs as well as the Ricoh GR III - something about that negative film simulation and their hard black and white options. Amazingly responsive to a bit of quick push and pull post editing. Saves so much time (and space)... certainly more time to make pictures.
you are the coolest! love your channel. I'm Fuji shooter too, and just recently got inspired by your jpeg-video. Thanks man, you are doing great stuff here. keep on going!
Hi there Omar, excellent 2 piece jpg talk, ..but, i also would like to see that most wanted sony color correction tutorial which you mentioned december last year. Hope it lands soon and thanks in advance.
Great video👍🏼 I’m considering purchasing the XT-4 and I’m a LRC user. Could you possibly do a video of your shoot to edit work flow to include shooting in raw and applying one of the Jpeg profiles in the edit process? If you already have such a video could you reference me to it? Thank you, enjoy your videos very much. Tom.
looking at the thumbnail through the bell notification smaller size i thought you grew hair :P hehe but yes people should and it wont hurt to experiment and try to edit their jpegs a little and see what actually happens. just last week thinking why am i editing my RAWs when im closer to my desired image in the fuji camera and I only need to adjust it just a little. still not sure but i believe it will prevent me from over editing my photo in the first place as well. Thanks for doing these sets of video.
As an old school film photographer from the 80's/90's I had become an avid fan of RAW due to it's obvious benefits but have recently realised it's made me a lazy photographer who hardly needs to worry about exposure due to the huge exposure latitude and dynamic range on modern cameras. I now often shoot JPG as you have to hone your skills and pay attention to proper exposure and learning what settings for which camera (ETTR or ETTL), shooting weddings and fashion with film cameras you had to know for sure you nailed the shots as soon as you clicked the shutter, no previews or arear screen, juts lots of practice, not even the ability to change ISO (ASA back then) unless you had a changing bag and could work blind folded
“I need a 100mp camera!” Had me dying. Tooooooo damn true. People zoom in on files 150-200% and are like wow these files are crap !! These same people usually are the ones that don’t even print their work and only post on social media. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ I said it ! lolol Also that car pic with the blueeeeee. oooOoooOo spicy.
"O knows PhotooooooOOO DOT COM" The thumbnail killed me haha. On a more serious side: I think the message is good. People in the internet act like people who shoot JPG have mental issues or something. It's fine, not as fine as RAW maybe but still, if the image is good and powerful, no one will ask. We started shooting images for other photographers but that shouldn't be necessarily be our audience.
Great video. I always shoot JPG and lightly edit in PS. All my images get tweaked before posting. I start with levels and set my white and black sliders and then a little vibrance and finally some sharpening. It really helps the images pop if you don't over do it.
I LOVE that thumbnail! I knew immediately I'd love it! Thank you for doing this very helpful video...everyone does raw instruction and way back in the beginning, I didn't shoot raw :(...dumb me but it was a space saving thing.
I shoot Craw and Jpeg, but often wifi transfer the joegs to the phone and tweak for posting to friends or such. Wouldn't be afraid to print it either. Editing raws is for when you have time to waste and want to make fine art photography or such. Get your jpeg settings how you like them, small tweaks to fix auto white balance to match your mood or something, extra contrast on flat days.
Images are flat because the camera adjusts exposure to be an even tone - grey. So when a majority of tones in the image are black, it will boost exposure to make it grey. Snow always looks grey if left to the camera. Exposure comp is definitely a winner in this case.
just saw the thumnail - for a brief moment I thought i saw jared with the title - shoot jpeg hahahahaha unbeleiveable creative clickbait - wonderful ! gonna watch ur vid now!
For me, If there are shadows are seen by the eye then they should stay. Maybe lifted a tad, but that's what I saw in the first place that attracted my eyes.
Cool video. I don't use LR, so your technique with the brush explanation goes a little too fast for me to understand. However, your idea of using the brush to see what it does and then toning it down to taste is a really cool thing.
Thank you Omar for this short and useful video. Yes I agree with you, most probably Fujifilm sensors are the only sensor-technology which provide this opportunity to take JPG straight out of camera and then do smoothly minor edit in Lightroom to get huge result! I tried Canon, Nikon, Sony but for this kind of result you need to shoot uncompressed RAW and spend more time for editing by switching between Lightroom and photoshop or other platforms like capture one (which I don’t like because I feel I’m more editor rather than a photographer). P.S. and of course this is possible when we agree the result (image quality) is at same level of acceptance!
I'm so fed up with the constant need to edit photos. I was photographing with Canon which doesn't seem know what WB is. When I sold my Canon gear and went with Fujifilm, I don't even shoot RAW anymore, the colors are correct and have that punch SOOC.
After years of only working with raw files I’ve learned that, getting it ‘right’ in camera applies more to jpegs than it does raw files. I’m a better photographer by aiming to not have to go to the raw files at all. When I was working almost exclusively with Sony alpha cameras I was spending 20-50% of my image making time in the edit. Since switching to Fuji almost exactly a year ago, I think I’ve processed maybe, 20-30 images from the raw files. For clarification, I’m primarily a portrait, lifestyle and wedding photographer. I’m 60/40 video creator/photographer.
Love your videos. Also love the orange amp (is that CR30? 🤣 ). Interesting is that connection between guitars and photography. Just an observation ;). Cheers from Croatia
this past weekend I shot in some challenging dim/high-constrast light with the xt-3 and 16mm f/1.4, but surprisingly the jpgs in eterna looked barely different from what I could touch up with the raw files--honestly I'd just stick with the jpgs and keep the raws for a select few shots
My biggest struggle is that in B&W i tend to dramatize the sky in my photos. I want the dark intense sky if there is good cloud structure. In B&W with a clear sky, the challenge is to show a change in shading to get a nice affect. If not careful the sky can get blown out and you lose any contrast between the subject and the sky.
I'll probably continue to edit my .RAF files but I like to see how others are using lightroom regardless. Seeing specifically how you use the brush, for example, is very helpful to me. Thanks!
first of all: THE THUMBNAIL omg! I could add the "fujifilm recipes thing" to all this and yes, you can do some magic with your jpegs, for sure!. great examples. and this is a fun way to shoot, definitely.
I went on to DP review the other day and downloaded some of the GFX 100s's picture and you can actually do a lot with them especially if they're underexposed. They're akin to slide film I was actually very surprised by them managed to get a very "filmic" look out of them
Have JPEGs gotten better? My 60mp full frame fp L generates JPEGs that are generally 25 to 41mb depending on how much subject isolation and background blur there is and I find I can edit these as much as I could want to. I feel like if I can not rescue some shadows or turn down some highlights, then I have not properly exposed the photograph to begin with. Raw files for this camera are about 85mb So compressing it down to a 41mp jpeg is not so drastic. I am wondering that with the lower price of digital storage has there been a decision made not to compress Jpegs so much allowing them to be more useful for post processing?
7:37 -- I agree, but honestly pretty soon with Photoshop CC and his new Neutral Filter "Super Zoom" (beta version) or use the amazing Topaz Gigapixel AI, to upscale photos, you can have huge photos and don't really need a 100-megapixel photo camera, even if it's way better to have one. Just like the Fujifilm GFX100 with 400 mega-pixels! The only problem with this camera is that it takes time to process, to the point that almost nothing should move when you take a photo.
I always shoot and edit Eterna jpegs with highlights and shadows both set to -2. You can always add contrast to a jpeg but can't necessarily take it away.

What is wrong with his face???? What??? Omar... That's not Omar. Omar is bald... Oooohhh WTF 😂 that's totally Omar humour 😂
Omar you could start another channel just doing edit tutorials or software tutorials. I'm thisclose to starting a Lightroom subscription and would benefit from a lot of this. For example most of us would just think a Contrast slider makes sense instead o Black Levels. They should, you know, just take the Contrast slider away ;)
That thumbnail 🤣🤣🤣
It's perfect! I love it as well! :D

Me half asleep and clicking on Jared's video, wondering why Omar is playing 🤣🤣
Thanks for the tips Omar. I'm new to editing and felt i should be shooting everything in RAW, this has shown me i can relax without stressing in post.

This is a welcome response to the snobbery around RAW files. You've transformed those JPEGs.
@Pete Melon shooting raw Is not snobby, its just more work that Demanding photographers care to do :D
@@MsMetal32 yeah for sure it gives more flexibility. However, the disadvantage is wasting heaps of time editing instead of going out there and shooting

Possible for you to give us tips on editing raw with silkypics 3.0 fujifilm X-T5 😊
Love the picture of the old cars!

Thank you for the Curve vintage look!!:)
Omar, can the next video’s title be I shoot with XF 70-300 please?
Ken Rockwell liked the video and subscribed 👍😁
...but commented that the saturation slider needs to be a maximum.
Great stuff, Mr Fro. Maybe do a tutorial on editing with X Raw Studio
Someday I will try raw, but I tend to tweak JPEGs slightly . The Fuji RAW poses hasn't found me yet & they removed my picture from the post office.
I'll probably continue to edit my .RAF files but I like to see how others are using lightroom regardless. Seeing specifically how you use the brush, for example, is very helpful to me. Thanks!
When I edit RAW it feels like I can go on and on but with jpegs, there is little to be done.
first of all: THE THUMBNAIL omg!

Was that thumbnail a jpeg edit?
Priceless!
I usally do the same. Transfer jpegs to phone and use Snapseed.
I went on to DP review the other day and downloaded some of the GFX 100s's picture and you can actually do a lot with them especially if they're underexposed. They're akin to slide film I was actually very surprised by them managed to get a very "filmic" look out of them

Great sense of humor Omar.

Computers and sitting for hours... shoot JPEG. Nice video!
