- This one had a few things wrong with it. One was that someone screwdrivered it. I really hate dealing with other people fux-ups.
If you don't know what an adjustment does, don't touch it. If it is paint sealed at the factory, that is done for a reason, don't touch it. Hours wasted on this one because someone messed around inside and that just adds to the repair cost.
Awesome job! There is probably only a handful of techs that have your knowledge to repair vintage electronics.
I won't disagree with you there. Some like the really old stuff with "Vacuum Bulbs" in them.
$129 for a SL-2710? Thrift stores are totally ridiculous these days
Yup they are.
@@12voltvids On an unrelated note, I have an SL-HF900. Owned it for over 10 years. The loading mechanism has decided to act up (I thought it was broken gears but they still seem to be intact). Basically the mechanism sounds very tired when loading a tape (threading is OK when it actually decides to thread the tape). I took out the loading mechanism from my departed SL-HF400 and it loaded perfectly for a couple of runs then it started acting the same way as the 900's mechanism (very tired and wouldn't load). Is there a secondary motor that goes bad with these mechanisms? Or something else like a faulty tape sensor switch?
@@D725U there are a couple of switches on the mech that control loading and unloading. The 900 isba different beast. It uses the take take up side end sensor as an unload end detection. I did a video showing two mechanisms a couple weeks
Same here in C.A..
I picked up an SL-HF300 for $60 including shipping from my home state.
Good luck sir and happy spring 🎉🎉🎉
I just hooked mine up to a tv because it seemed to be very picky about which tape I used, and it's doing the exact same thing as this one, only one tape plays stable, and only if i track about 30%. So then I realized that someone had been messing with the guide that you said never to mess with, they screwed it all the way down and it was curling the tape! Now all my tapes play really well!!!!
I still own my 2710 that I purchased in '85. I'm slowly digitizing old content that's deemed rare enough for the effort involved. Tracking is good, it has never needed service, but I have noticed that rewinding goes slower than I remember. I may need to use your technique on taking the shine off the upper drum. Thanks for the informative video.
The upper drum was quite soft on the 2500 2700 2710. Even the old 5000 series the upper drum was quite soft and required the same technique. as I said on the video we used to change those drums left right and center but they were really expensive from Sony. I remember talking to one of the texts at Sony one day and I was complaining bitterly about things up for drums and he said oh you can fix those. I remember him saying that it wasn't sanctioned by Sony to do it but what they were doing in the shop was to take them off and take a piece of paper towel and some comet cleanser and mix it into a paste and just rub the shine off them. Since I found out about that that's all I was ever doing. Now by doing so you are removing a little bit of the surface in the process so as the head tech at Sony told me you can do it a few times but if you do it too many times it will reduce enough for the metal that will cause some tracking problems so bear that in mind and certainly don't use anything like sandpaper because that will remove too much. The big problem with these drums was the ultra high grade tapes. Sony came out with the high grade and the ultra high grade, those are the ones that came in the gold box. Yes the tape was superior to the older oxide tape however the tape itself was so smooth that it polished that drum much faster and caused all kinds of problems especially on the 2000 2500 and 2700 machines. Those machines would actually start to slap the tape because of the direct drive motors and break the tape on rewind. If you watch the video I put up a few years ago the super Beta training video that runs about 3 hours the instructor actually talks about that on that training video to let all the other guys in the room no about that problem. I think there was probably 40 of us attending that seminar that I filmed and I filmed it so I could bring it back to the shop for The other guys that needed to see it
Loved my sony SLC9E what a machine. 1982 years ahead of its time.
It's great seeing old machines saved from e-waste 👍
Its not so much about e-waste here, it is for archiving old media that people have from 40 years ago.
Wait till you see the cool old toshiba svhs I will be looking at next. The ads used to call it the "Snow Plow"
I bought one of these, it sat in somebodies AV rack for 25 years and baked every cap dry, bad loading gear, bad tape end sensor, I got it working really well but it still had intermittent picture noise sometimes so bad it was unwatchable. I gave up and dropped it off at a thrift store. I found the exact same machine online, some guy is trying to flip it for $500+. The part number for the hall sensor is THS103A.
Worth perhaps 100 in working condition, but there are suckers born every minute
I never owned this model but I loved my Betamax player. Had great video quality, much better than VHS.
Weird, darts are completely backwards. When they get shiny and polished they start to not stick and bounce out. So you go over them with an abrasive and then they need quite a bit of force to pull them out of the board.
Another use for ba rkeeper's friend it seems. Nice fix
I love that he loves cat's. I just got this machine(well, once like it.) YOU, sir, got me into this..
Regrets? None ..😊
Beautiful, except for the obtrusive ad breaks.
You are a genuis on this maschines 😊👍👍👍
The ole SFWI problem ha ha! Great way to start a video.
Well it looks great now :-D
The phantom tweakers have been at it again!
The owner is lucky that you are an expert in video systems, it looks perfect now.
I always thought a shiney head was a good thing, i was wrong.
I had one machine that had been damaged by a mad friend with a knife, there was a dent in the aluminium drum made by the point of the knife.
Lucky it didn't hit the head chips.
I reasoned that i could not make it worse, so i took a tiny fine file and carefully removed the volcano dent, then i used an abrasive rubber block to smooth it off.
I was amazed, the vcr worked perfect record and play :-D
The owner is actually a local viewer and he reached out to me after watching other beta videos. I am one of the few that work on the old machines. Most of the people that worked on these old machines are either long retired or dead. I have been retired from doing this as as career for 20 years. The guy I worked with, actually all the guys that I worked with in the shop are all dead. The guy I used to get all my parts from, dead, most of the guys I knew back in the day that ran other shops are all dead, and those still around are in their 70's and 80's and haven't touched any of this stuff in years, and the younger people have no idea how this stuff works. That's the reason I make these videos, to pass on what I learned over the past 40 years working on this old equipment. I'll keep doing it as long as there are things to take apart and fix, or at least try to fix.
It is becomming a pain in the ass though. This video has a copyright claim that I have disputed for visuals I showed on the screen of MY OWN CONTENT.
@@12voltvids Maybe some of the people you knew liked alcohol or cigarettes a bit too much, the result will often be a shorter life.
Although the entertainer george burns drank and smoked like steam train, finally passing away at 100 years old!!
D.n.a differences?, luck maybe.
Sometimes i'm surprised how long some people can live while using alcohol or cigarettes.
Beautiful machine! Betamax!
12voltvids, can use Betacam metal tapes on regular Betamax safely for recording? With putting some tape on the holes. Some people saying that Betacam metal tapes will wear heads faster.
You can not use the betacam SP tapes on betamax. You can use the regular betacam tapes. SP were metal tape and required special heads just like 8mm tape. You can use betacam SP tape on the EDBeta machines as they used metal tape. You can also use the sp tapes on betacam SX cameras.
@12voltvids Thank you for guidance and recommendation. I got a brand new Betacam SP blank tapes. So, I can not use it on regular Betamax machines.
@@dmitripetrov5536 no, betacam SP tape can not be used on betamax as it is a metal tape and will wear out the heads quickly. That tape can be used on ED beta and betacam SX
Great video. Really enjoyable.
Really nice!! Great job!
maybe you just need a really big monitor set up so you can see most of the schematic at once. i agree it is a nuisance
Even a big monitor won't really do much you still have to blow it up. I have a 28 inch monitor in my edit Bay and a 42 in plasma and I still have to zoom in to read the numbers. I just hate working off computer screens I never have enjoyed working off computer screens or microfiche. I remember when RCA went microfiche with the schematics and I just hated it. I had this gigantic microfiche reader on my bench that must have had a 30-inch screen it was massive but it was still a joke trying to read anything off of them
Super video
Thats the beta version eh
Always making magic.
Thanks for sharing!
Great work
Can rubbing compound be used?
Just stick to the kitchen clenser
Thanks!
He sounds so tired when the tape is playing 😴
Who Omar?
@@12voltvids when the tape is playing it sounds like it's tired the vcr
👍👍😎✌️🤟
Whats a Betamax?
It's what comes between the Alphamax and the Gammamax.
It was the best form of video tape, but VHS won the Video Tape format wars and we suffered with lesser quality until DVD's came out.
@@AudioGuyBrian For home use. BETACAM was the professional version that was the broadcast standard for many years right up to the end of tape.
It must be a joke or you are millenial.
And some stupid person will claim a copyright anyway!
Yes there is a claim on visuals from my video at the end. Dispute has been filed but not released. It will sit for 30 days I am affraid and I don't make a penny during that time.
@@12voltvids I knew it , there's ALWAYS a stupid person that likes free money or just f""" with one. I hope you win and keep up your videos. :)
@@mrpedrodrodriguezsr7628
Yes they file frivolous claims hoping that it won't get disputed. Then when a dispute is filed they leave it to expire in 30 days and the creator has to wait an additional 30 days to be paid for the video.
Played to many dirty videos.
I am a programmer with experience in graphic design. I could merge these schematics into a high res single image.
Sure but none of us have a printer to print on
I wouldn't say none. I have access up to 36" x 500' (that would be a full roll)
@@TheTrueVoiceOfReason Thats nice, the rest of us don't
@@12voltvids just the happenstance of my job. Nice enough if I need it.
