This was great because I always used the rubbing alcohol to clean my tumblers before spray painting but I wasn't sanding it down before hand but I will start today
OMG! Thank you so much for sharing this video! Love how you two advise the users from step A to step Z. I am waiting for my tumblers and I will probably watch this video at least another couple of times before starting my tumbler adventure!
This is the first video I have seen that shows how to prep. I always hear about doing it, but not how. I'm getting all my stuff now to start making tumblers and didn't know exactly how to prep.
Were you two in my sewing room tonight because I was ready to do my first tumbler, went to review some videos, and found out I had to prep it first. Got it sanded and washed, off to Lowes tomorrow for the paint.
@@DIYAlex Yes it does. Don't know why it never occured to me to prep the stainless steel tumbler before. Thanks for the video!! Yours have always been so helpful.
My apologies in advance for what may seam like the same question. But if the cup came colored already be white or any other color. If you have to ruff (sand) the steel cup so that all will adhered to the cup with the process that you suggest. What would you do for those that come with color but you want to add glitter to it. BTW I'm in love with all of your series on doing the tumblers the best I have seen so far. I just want to make sure that I am doing it correctly as I am tried of wasting money on glasses which is what I have been doing the process on because they are cheaper. I have the same question. My tumblers are white and I’m afraid that if I sand it the white will come off. Do we just clean it with alcohol? 🤷🏻♀️ Thank you, I love your videos!
@@laurahuitron9397 Laura please let me know if you got a response. The one that was given to me was I don’t have to paint them but I’m still confused as to what other prepping may need to get done.
Hey ladies! Thanks for your question. I would do a light sand over top your color to rough up the surface. Then clean with soap and water and then rub down with alcohol. Epoxy may “slide” off super smooth surfaces, so the sanding gives it something to stick to. If you’re nervous about sanding I would at least finish with a spray of clear acrylic spray all over before applying epoxy.
I dont know if it's been ask...do you need to always paint after sanding? Thank you for doing what you do. I am learning so many things from your videos.
You’re so welcome! It’s a good idea to paint it either white or a color that matches the glitter you’re using, but you don’t absolutely have to paint it.
I watched another video where a lady put mod podge on the inside rim of her cup during prep, helps with cleanup at the end. Just another tip for the newbies, like me.
Thank you so much i'm wanting to start doing these but i wanted to know why don't you use the white tumblers and do you have videos on how those are done? thank you so kindly
Thank you so much for this video! I had a quick general question about prepping: If the point of sanding is to give the epoxy a rough surface to stick to, then why the spray paint? Wouldn't the spray paint just cover all the scuff marks made from sanding?
You’re welcome! Yes that’s you sand. You would think it would cover the scruff marks, but it doesn’t. The paint helps make the glitter brighter. You can also match the color to the glitter if you prefer instead of white.
There are several methods that you can use including Mod Podge or Spray Adhesive (like Loctite). I don’t have tutorials on any other methods currently, but I’ll add a video to my list!
Thank you. I just noticed in the videos you said you were gonna show 2 ways to glitter it but only shown the epoxy method so was wondering what your 2nd methods was
Thank you so much for your response. So I can go straight to adding the glitter to the cup with the white cup? I love your video and getting ready to go over again series 3 before moving onto part 4. So want to confirm if I want to put several different glitter colors I can keep completely white and move on? Will the glitter still hold without ruffing the tumbler with the sand paper?
I recommend starting with Alumilite epoxy, but beyond that I would just start buying different brands and trying them. I used Pro Marine after Alumilite, but everyone has a different preference.
Hi! Love your videos! If the cup has a paint powder coat color from the store (not glossy) that has some slight texture, do you still recommend sanding or could I resin and glitter right over it instead of sanding it all off and spray painting?
If I don’t want glitter on the whole cup and want the chrome of the cup to show in some areas, do I still need to sand the whole cup? I’m just starting to do this so I have a lot to learn. I appreciate your response very much!!!
Hi! Thank you for the video! Very helpful! I have a couple of questions: When salvaging ceramic mugs and SS tumblers for made sublimation (that come with a ploy-coat) is it necessary to prep this way still? Or can you epoxy right over that? Also since there are paints designed to adhere to metal, what does the sanding do if you still have to cover with paint? Isn’t the epoxy adhering to the paint, a coating, then? So using a paint for metal could eliminate sanding? Sorry if I’m being confusing- I just don’t understand how covering the metal with paint is different than applying epoxy to a coated surface. Thanks for any feedback 🙏🏾
I would prep this way no matter what. I don’t recommend putting epoxy on ceramic mugs. The sanding is necessary to create texture of the epoxy to stick to. It doesn’t have anything to do with the paint. The paint is only necessary for color to make the glitter brighter. I hope that helps clear up your questions ☺️
Great question! I haven’t tried it myself, but I would think so. It mostly depends on the coating on the outside of the tumbler. Make sure you prep it well if it’s really smooth!
We work outside with the spray paint because it needs to be used in a well-ventilated area. That's the only precaution we used for spray paint and rubbing alcohol :). Thanks for asking!
You’re welcome! I have only ever used stainless steel tumblers, but I have seen others do the plastic tumblers like 651vinyl’s color changing ones. I’m sure it would would work!
I wondered that same thing, I did my 1st cup last week and it's a hard plastic drinking cup, had flowers on it... I like to recycle/upcycle, not for drinking but a pencil holder or brushes... I wouldn't think the color changing cups would work, I'd be afraid the epoxy would crack, because the cups are "bendable" , just my opinion 🙂
Hello! Will the clear acrylic spray cause fish eyes if it is not matte finish? The one you have linked is glossy and I have heard in other videos that anything but a matte finish will cause fish eyes in the epoxy. Thank you for the wonderful videos! I am just starting out and haven't made anything yet but your videos are so informative and have given me the courage to start this beautiful craft.
I have a question...So if your going to keep the tumbler the same silver color and not paint it would you still sand it? Because, wouldn't you see the scratch marks from the sand paper?? So should I just skip that step and goto the rubbing alcohol cleanse instead?? Thank you for your input.
Hey Andrew! Yes, I would probably skip the sanding. You could wipe down with alcohol and then consider spraying clear acrylic sealer all over the cup to give a similar textured effect that the sanding does.
I didnt know I was supposed to sand it all the videos I gave watched never showed that makes sense my epoxy would dip off so bad. Should i always spraypaint the tumbler?
I never have sanded my tumblers all I do is clean with alcohol and then wash and dry... Plus I've discovered to let my epoxy sit for 20+ minutes stirring occasionally so it doesnt get hard and then you need less layers... I havent had any problems and I've only have been doing this for 4 months
I personally would not let your epoxy sit that long personally. If the layer takes longer than expected you might end up with it getting too thick to work with.
Hello. I wasnt sure how else to ask but if i just wanted solid color with no glitter what would be the best process. Like sand spray/paint, then epoxy or should i seal paint before epoxy?
To make a non-glitter cup, i would prep it, paint it using acrylic or spray paint, then epoxy, sand if needed, and epoxy again. Sealing your paint shouldn't be necessary.

That I don't have to stock up on each color of spray paint! That white will generally work for all!❤😁
Yes I love that trick! I hate having to constantly buy spray paint!
Did you do anything to protect the inside of the cup before spraying? I would think spray paint would get inside the cup.
No, I wait and clean it up at the end. You can see how I do that in the last video of the series. :)
Any tips on getting your tumblers levels in the turner?
I find that using a foam insert is the best way to ensure it's level. Footballs (like what I used to use) make it harder to get the cup level.
Thank you so much i'm wanting to start doing these but i wanted to know why don't you use the white tumblers and do you have videos on how those are done? thank you so kindly
Spray painting the cup adds a lot of grip for the epoxy, so I prefer to add the color myself. I don't have a video on using the white cups. Sorry!
Can you use this same method for tumblers that have a more matte finish? Do you still need to sand it?
Yes, the finish shouldn't matter. The purpose of the sanding is to give the epoxy something to grip, so I always recommend sanding.
Hi! What size are those footballs? I see they sell lots of sizes?
Thank you so much for this video! I had a quick general question about prepping: If the point of sanding is to give the epoxy a rough surface to stick to, then why the spray paint? Wouldn't the spray paint just cover all the scuff marks made from sanding?
You’re welcome! Yes that’s you sand. You would think it would cover the scruff marks, but it doesn’t. The paint helps make the glitter brighter. You can also match the color to the glitter if you prefer instead of white.
How long does the paint need to dry after sanding, & before adding the glitter?
As soon as the epoxy is applied you can add glitter.
Hello I’m a beginner and wanted to now what kind of epoxy do you recommend me to use?
I recommend Alumilite epoxy for beginners :) www.651vinyl.com/alumilite-amazing-clear-cast-16-ounce-kit.html

I responded to your question in another comment with what I recommend ☺️
What about a colored tumbler can I do the same prep work without the step with the spray paint?
Yes you can.
Very interesting I really like that video but would like to know if I could sublimate an design on it help please
No, you can't sublimate on top of epoxy tumblers or plain glitter tumblers. They have to be sublimation blanks from the beginning.
Do you have a video for the next step after you add the glitter? What’s the clear shiny coating that goes on after glitter
Yes, all the steps are in order in this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLdqAY6wTCkWCeMGXrRhEhYsorONi7RDQc
The clear coat is clear acrylic spray.
Newbie question.... could you just as well started with a white tumbler, if not why ?
You can, but it needs to be white and smooth. It’s usually cheaper to buy plain stainless.
Thank you guys so much... i would only prep with spray pain never knew i needed to sand the actual tumbler first...
You’re welcome! The sanding step is so helpful! I think you’ll see a difference when you try it!
I love your videos! Thank you for sharing! What type of epoxy should I use? What is a good alternative for Alumilite epoxy?
I recommend starting with Alumilite epoxy, but beyond that I would just start buying different brands and trying them. I used Pro Marine after Alumilite, but everyone has a different preference.
Great video! After spray painting it, do you have to seal with anything or can you go straight to the epoxy and glitter?
Thank you! You can go straight to epoxy.
If you want you can seal it with clear acrylic spray, but that’s optional.
Can you do the same thing with a colored tumbler without the step of the spray paint
Yes, but a light sanding is still good to add texture.
Love your video thank you for sharing. Quick question, if I already have a coloured tumbler do I need to sand before epoxy and glitter?
I would sand lightly to add texture.
Did you make the wand, or whatever you used to put the cup on, while you spray painted it? If so, do you mind sharing how you made it?
I bought it from Etsy! Now there are a lot more available on the market on Etsy and Amazon.
Do you cover the open part of the cup so spray paint does not get inside the cup when spraying it?
Wendy Barreto You can leave it open and we’ll show you how to clean it out in our last video of the series.
If I wanted to use black glitter will black spray paint be best?
Yes
Do you need to sand the cup if you’re not spray painting the cup?
I would do a light sand so that the epoxy has a good grip on the surface.
Hi! Love your videos! If the cup has a paint powder coat color from the store (not glossy) that has some slight texture, do you still recommend sanding or could I resin and glitter right over it instead of sanding it all off and spray painting?
I would at least give it a light sand to give it more texture. You can skip spray painting if you like the color of the cup.
can i use the white sublimation tumbler the skinny
You can, but it's not necessary to use a sublimation tumbler. They are usually more expensive.
great video, do you have to let the spray paint dry for 2 days before you can do anything? i heard there was a gas off process
No, you can start working with it as soon as it's dry.
The black is the metal you just sanded down, not a clear coat....
Not sure if this has been asked but can you buy a tumbler that’s already matte white and skip this part? They are a little rough already
If it’s already rough it may be powder coated, so I don’t recommend it, but if you can get it to work then that will save you a step.
If I don’t want glitter on the whole cup and want the chrome of the cup to show in some areas, do I still need to sand the whole cup? I’m just starting to do this so I have a lot to learn. I appreciate your response very much!!!
I would not sand areas that you don't want glitter on.
I make resin crafts, but tumblers always intimate me. I splurged and got what I need to get over my fear.
But do you tape the top?
I personally don't, but you'll need to experiment so you can find what t works for you!

The decal was cut on a Cricut machine.
Where does you get a wooden holder??
Etsy, Amazon, etc.
What if I’m using a black tumbler? Do I skip the sand paper and just use rubbing alcohol?
I would lightly sand it and then wipe it down with alcohol and wash. Sanding gives the cup texture for the epoxy to stick to.

It’s really helpful for getting an even cost of epoxy! The paint helps the glitter look brighter but it’s not required.

Clear acrylic spray. I like the Rustoleum brand.

It's the arm of my cup spinner. It's made of PVC pipe and a football to help hold the tumbler onto the arm.

There are a lot of great brands out there. We used Pro Marine in this video. I haven’t heard the brand you listed, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work!
Are those Color Street Nails? :)
You bet they are!
do you need to spray paint cup or can I epoxy and glitter directly on steel after alcohol step?
It’s best to paint it first

A PVC pipe with a pool noodle on the end of it that I shove inside the cup.
Where do I get epoxy and glitter

I have a question about handles. My Hubby likes to use a handle on his cup. I don't think it would fit over the dried epoxy though. How would you work with the handle? Should I leave it on and tape it, or epoxy around it?
I would epoxy the handle just like the rest of the cup. Do you mean an attached handle or the ones that slide on?
@@DIYAlex It's a slide on handle.
Where do you buy the tumblers from?
The Stainless Depot is my favorite.
I’m at a standstill I can’t find anything that would work to rotate the cup and let it turn For 3 to 4 hours can you help with this or give me some ideas
You need a cup turner to do that. You can find them on Amazon.
If you do alcohol inks, do you sand afterwards?
You only sand over layers of epoxy.
@@DIYAlex thanks for replying!!🙂
Sorry if I missed the answer to this but if I have a 16 oz tumbler how do I figure out how much epoxy to use?
It varies by each step, so keep watching through the series to learn thee answer for each one!

Hand sanitizer would probably work too! Also an alcohol wipe out of a first aid kit would work too.
Can you spray paint clear sealer than put image than epoxy?
If you’re not going to glitter it then that’s fine! You can paint it a color if you want to instead of using clear.
I have a cup and it has chipped on the bottom how can I fix it?
Sand the area down as bast you can and apply another layer of epoxy
if i have a matte finish tumbler in like rose gold do i need to sand it and spray it?
I still would prep it because it gives the glitter a better surface to stick to.

No not really, I just like that brand.
Thanks
What happens if I didn't sand my tumbler first and I pray painted lightly with matte spray paint.
It's not going to have as good of a surface for the epoxy to "grip", but it will probably be fine!
Can I use a colored stainless steel tumbler ?
Yes you can, but then the paint is kind of irrelevant. So I prefer to buy them plain and paint them.
@@DIYAlex Thank you for the fast response. Do I still have to prep by sanding it?
I would still sand to provide texture for the epoxy.
Can you use steel wool instead of sandpaper?
I haven't tried that myself, but I would think it would work just fine!
does it matter if the paint is gloss or matt or anything else? thank you
Not really since you’ll cover it with glitter.
