  • More Marum lava footage from my archive. Most of this footage has never been seen before. I've had it stored and have only just had the time to start going through my collection. This particular expedition was the most violent I had ever seen the lava lake. Some of the bursts were over my height when filming from the lake's top edge. It was also this time that I had a spatter of lava shoot over me (that's another video!).
This series of clips are from as close as any person has ever been to the lava lake. At 1200 degrees Celsius the lava puts out a tremendous amount of heat that begins to burn bare skin and starts to cook the camera and lenses.
The Marum lava lake is within the Marum vent of the Ambrym volcano on Ambrym in Vanuatu. The abseil is between 300-400m down vertical cliffs and across a number of crater shelves. This lake drained after a volcanic event on the island.
    Footage copyright Bradley White.

I agree. You can really get a sense of nature’s power getting close to liquid rock!

This is so incredible! Did you feel safe? How could you be sure the Lava wouldn't boil over and cover you? Perhaps the camera lens makes it look like you are closer that you actually are? Just curious what you were feeling in that moment. Thank you for sharing. Truly amazing!

I did feel safe…up until I had lava spatter shoot over me on this expedition! (But that’s another video). The most dangerous part of these trips was the travel (cars, planes, ferries, helicopters, Port Vila buses…), but I’d add the 300m plus abseil inside had a few issues (rock fall etc). You’ll notice a number of the clips are handheld as I was using a medium lens (I think 24-70mm). This meant I was close…and I was as close as humanly possible without falling in. Also as close as possible that my lens was heating up and the lens coating melted. A few seconds filming and it burns bare skin.
Over the years, I had had the most descents to that lava lake (over 20) and each time it was such an amazing experience. If it was still there I would love to do it again.

You’ll notice the difference between the angles of this video and the following Mesmerising 4k footage of molten lava bubbling in a lava lake
      ruclips.net/video/B_hlQ4kP2I8/видео.html
In that one, the majority of clips are from the craters edge and zoomed in. This video is down on the crater floor and as close as you can get to the lava lake without falling in!
