I just purchased a DGX 970B. For the money, I am quite pleased with that for just over $1000 (w/ stand and 3 pedals) vs. this Genos 2 for ~$6000. To me, after watching this nice demonstration, the G2 would need to do much more to justify an increase of $5000. Each time you will change for another style variation (A,B,C,D), the right hand instruments will also change accordingly. 2. You can prepare all your changes in advance and save them in the 10 memory banks located below the screen. That way, you are always 1 button away of a perfect live transition 👍. Great demo. Love it!

Concert Tutti. In Italian, “tutti” refers to everyone, so that means that everyone in a concert ensemble plays at the same time. For example, you hit one single C note, you’ll hear horns, timpani, brass, cymbals…. Basically everything you’d hear in a full orchestral concert.

Someone playing as a hobby might want to consider their own satisfaction with the instrument they’re getting, though. A keyboard that is going to bring a cornucopia of timbres, arranging, personally programmable synth sounds, percussion, organ drawbars, etc. is going to be worth the saving up/financing/bank loan/lay-away plan, etc. if it’s giving you the full pleasure you wanted from playing as leisure time. There’s also the benefit of having a single instrument then learning all of its bells and whistles and hidden intricacies to get you to the end point you actually wanted to have by the end of every track you play or create without grumbling through a manual or having to scavenger hunt a bunch of quasi-useful U-Toob tutorial vids. There’s nothing wrong with being a little self-indulgent if it’s your long-time personal interest and pastime.
presets only, basic attack release, with addition of filter controls. this is not for fm programmers, much better options out ther! but probably perfect for preset flippers like me, haha!
Yes, you can. New sounds and styles can be uploaded by the user using a USB pen drive or the Yamaha free App (Expansion Manager). I have the Genos 1 loaded with thousands of new sounds and styles.
@@carlosoliveirasilva7297 we're talking about FM sounds. Can you import DX7 or FM-X SysEx? As the manual mentions nothing on this. You get 63 DX7 patches from Yamaha and about the same number of (probably 8-op) other FM patches. Yeah sure, maybe Yamaha will release expansions.. but it's very much a spoon feed ecosystem, rather than one where you can make patches in Dexed or such to import The only control you get over the FM engine is 2 or 4 voice unison mode (128 voice polyphony), detune, and pan-spread controls
@@Wagoo for FM sounds, I have no idea. FM sounds are not implemented on Genos 1. But since Genos is not a synth, I doubt Yamaha will implement this facility.
Interesting how many Genos2 videos have been popping up lately. Well it doesn't sound bad at all, although, in my personal opinion, I find those Arranger Keyboards to be over the top overpriced. I am a bit impressed by what those keyboards can do today compared to back in the 90s. And it is a bit fascinating, and although I think it could probably be nice to have an arranger, I struggle to find any real use of them in my gig. I am mainly a vocalist and I use synths/sequencer as backing during my performances. I could imagine it be a great keyboard in the songwriter workshop where it's used to quickly sketch out quick ideas for new songs and produce quick demos to present to the band. I checked the online shops here in Norway, and it cost a whopping 60 000 NOK .. and for that much money you could get a MODX6+, a Nautilus 6 and MCP Key 61! and with those 3 synths/WS you could do almost everything and probably even better than the Genos2. More sounds, more sequencing/sampling/looping and definingly more tweaking of your sounds. I mean Genos2 brag about having FM engine, well, I suppose it is presets, while in MODX+ you get 128 notes polyphonic, fully editable, 8 operator engine. It also have over 10 000+ arpeggios that you could put on all parts. emulating the styles. With Akai MPC 61 you could also use to create "styles" more like you could sample the parts of the songs and loop whatever parts you needed to loop using the 128 pads (16 pads x 8 of banks) Yes it would take more time to do this manually, but that is where the fun is? no? For me its not fun going on stage just reproduc... eh .."playing" something Yamaha made. For me I want everything to be handmade by myself. Down to a single note. And I can pat myself on the back "I did this.. I created it all" )) Do I see myself ever buying Genos2? No way. Its too expensive. I might maybe get a SX900 down the line, but not now. Probably will be the next SX900 replacement. I could use it as a brainstorming songwriting instrument. Would I use it live? nope. I also think those keyboards are mostly used "live" by those who play "taffelmusic" at weddings or other parties where they sit and play during dinner but most people do not really pay attention to what is played, just that something is played instead of a CD player. Ps. I think the style you played at the beginning is more "The Boys of Summer" by Don Henley than take on me.
thanks for your thoughts, yeah, i agree, the drawback is the price, i don't know how it is justified compared to other keyboards and synths from yamaha. but G2 selling well, from what i have heard, so what do i know? yeah, my riffs were from BOS, but on an innapropriate style, as I like to do... :)
@@WoodyPianoShack I hear the difference between de 900 series and the genos..900 series feels like you playing a keyboard, not the real deal sounds..when you hear the Genos..you don't know if it is a keyboard..sounds sound like it is a real instrument..If it is around 2000 I might consider.
Stunning keyboard..so good that it might be perceived as a karoeke track machine... personally I don't like the boat shape profile from the front ..prefer straight lines....
So im trying to buy either the korg pa5x or this. I have emailed both companies and no one ever gets back. In trying to figure out if its possible to track out the drum sets. For example i want to use turkish oriental sets, take 4-8 bars of the rhythm sets, track them out and use the percussions of the set by replacing the kick with something else in my DAW. Korg users have told me thats not possible, and id have to record each kick, snare etc separately as audio file wav.
I supose it can be done if you play out over audio the separate parts of the style, eg the drums and using an audio to midi converter in your Daw. I do find it very limiting though that a keyboard that cost as much as Korg Pa5x and Genos2 doesn't offer playout through midi while keyboards like Roland Jupiter-x/xm and Juno-X (that cost considerably less can actualy do this. I just saw some days ago a video on RUclips that someone did just that. They programed a short sequence, and used the USB interface of the keyboard recording the multi track audio AND the midi track simultaneously. You could probobly also just record the midi track. It had 5 stereo track one for the 4 parts + drums + one stereo for the vocoder and the stereo mix. Worked like a charm.
good question, i'm using factory settings, but yes you can tune to your likings. although i don't find it too much or little when playing, feels about right.
Brilliant, Woody, just brilliant! I hope Yamaha watches your videos on the Genos 2 and decides not to call the loan in -- you deserve to keep it. Maybe they'll "loan" you a Montage M, also? 🤭 As a Genos 1 owner I've been on the fence about upgrading, and these are the type of demos that sell keyboards! I can't wait for your next instalment in the series. 👏🎉🎹
hi, glad to help you in any way with your purchasing choices! i could probably borrow a montage if I asked around but tbh I just don't have time to learn another deep instrument.
Splendid demo. I was thinking Roland fantom 8 but I think this is more versatile as in the set intro outro styles etc don't think the Roland has any backing at all ? Does the keyboard limit you as it is not 88 or weighted which is a n attraction on the roland
no backing on the fantom, except perhaps some drum patterns. you gotta make them yourself, and then it's a midi sequencer not realtime responding to chords. 76 keys is very luxurious to me, not limiting. i am used to 49 or 61...
@@WoodyPianoShack sorry my intention was not to ask a silly question but I found it interesting if the backing tracks have the notes.. excuse my ignorance

I have played arranger keyboards for forty years , and you timing and reflexes.and speed of hand has to be as fast as a ninja...In order to play them I have no problems ,,I love the arranger.,to create music with more then any instrument in the world ,, and what Yamaha.and Korg Roland Casio and many more , has done I hope they keep it up , In the last ten years I am very happy with , I use arranger keyboards as a base booard and other synths or all different brands , but mostly Yamaha to create music with ,, Really Woody what it does is it gives one person total creative control over the song they want to play and also you can select and rearrange any song in a different style learning this is where the musical art begins , having the talent first to even play piano , I started playing piano when I was 14 years old ,and guitar , drums when I was 6 years old and singing ,, I am well aware of softwear synths and multi tracking , I did studio work in 1980's I have played in country bands and gospel music and church choirs and also Listen to pop rock and edm and disco ,, I was choir director and pianist almost forty years ago and also went to gay bars in Detroit Michigan in 1981.. and heard Sylvester James music ,, Patrick Cowley ,, and Trio Da da da ,, and Soft Cell sex dwarf , Johnny Rotton ,sex Pistols ,,Punk , and Tent Revival southern Gospel music ,,and ACDC and David Bowie and Pink Floyd and the Singing Cooks and Dottie Rambo , I Love the Lighting seeds Ian Brodie ,, I call them my modern Beatles,... Your English you should know of the Kings singers ,,six men , I Love Roger Whittecar my piano teacher turned me on to him in the 1970's ,,In my youth I Loved Dan Fogelberg , and Pink Floyd and ACDC and Donna Summer aka Giorgio Moroder ,,He produced all her music ,, I Love Madleen kane ,,Giorgio Moroder produced her to ,, I Loved Queen , I did not listen to the hits I listen to Love of my Life and the more classical piano songs queen did Freddy Mercury was quite the innovator we have arrived at a place where they are so many songs and artist just every where ,,millions of sounds and subjects have been written about is there nay left? that is one reason I life Goa music and strange artist like Diamanda Galás she chews and ripps and bites and screeches he musical music out ,,she is a strange artist but brings a different unlike anyone else ,,I was playing guitar and a song i Love ,,Nights on Broadway by BeeGees who I have Loved from the first time I ever heard them Barry Gibb Lives in Nashville now ,, and has sang with Ricky scaggs ,,, Music is really changing I think the people at Yamaha is aware of this , and I am a artist musician extreme in my musical likes and loves over my life time and musical instrument like the arranger its necessary that TechKNOWLOGY takes a look in to how artist play what kind of instrument the modern musicians will compose music with a instrument ,, the arranger like the Genos 2 is something that is there to meet our evolutions and growth as people artist creations that is my feelings ,,the arrangers and synthesizers will not play them self , the song is not in them the son is in the heart and mind of the artist musician Yamaha understand this I do and we must keep AI under control to some point ai can be very vastley intelligent but its dead it is not alive ,,Humans are alive and they have souls ,, and so does gingers ,,,
a bit hard for my old eyes to follow and read without paragraphs, but thanks anyway for the long and thoughtful comment! :D
I thing you are the first player that i've seen starting a style other than c cord, i like your site you are a good player also have good sense of humor not that grumpy old that doesn't like this or that like another player on youtube sounds like he purchased the wrong keyboard to me keep it up I PURCHASED MY GENOS 2 was first waching youre utube
I think yamaha makes the best arranger keyboards. I havent played for years but this looks like a lot of fun😊👍
It is about time for me to get a new keyboard or workstation so I find your videos really uplifting. I am not rushing into buying one. Thanks so much for your information from your experiences about the wide array of products.
thank you, yeah, take your time and enjoy the hunt!
I would love to see/hear you extend that rendition of Crocket's theme that you did at around 14:25. That was beautiful!
thank you, yes I have plans to do entire song covers, perhaps using more suitable styles and voices!
Stunning sounds Woody. Love it
Epic Woody! Looking forward to the next videos!
Question: Have you tried the microphone feature? If not could you demo please? Many thanks!
nope, maybe I will, i'm a shy singer...
Excellent thank you!
Such a lovely board. Got mine on Thursday afternoon, and it practically havn't been turned off since ... I'm so sleep deprived now 😂
yes, the hours really do fly by! congrats on yours.
If I could have only one instrument while marooned on a desert island, this would have to be it. With solar panels to power the thing, of course.
The genos 2 sounds good
Wow amazing.... looks like the competition is on!!!! Roland and Dan Smith & Behringer look out!!!
Beautiful demo! Love your voicings.
17:40 Ross in Friends vibes... 😂 seriously though, great review Woody, looks like some piece of kit.
Thay Yamaha Genos is Beautiful sounding and looking , Woody you do wonderful...I Love your honest direct way of speaking about the keyboard and bloopers..and all , You play very well...
you'll reconsider when you see all the failed takes... :D thx for the message!
@@WoodyPianoShack Piano Players has tried to play my arrangers and its very strange to them ,,yes woody your video would be interesting to watch ,, but the arranger is amazing its the best of all ,Yamaha Korg Roland Casio Alesis , Kawai I had one once by Kawai I think at one time or another about all different names has made a arranger ,, Moog is great but not moog ,,but a moog by its self ,,we could play the magnetic fields of earth sounds ,, or flock of seaguls I ran ,,intro ,,wich sound alike to earths ,, and related to the Aurora borealis Northers lights ,
Its not your eyes its my text and grammar I speak in Toungs or lack of I am autodidact I never went to school ,I learn to read age 38 ,I got my first computer 1996,, and I begin to read before that I never read any books ,,only the Bible and that was the only book I ever read ,,and the main book in it was book or Revelations that all and some the other writings in it ,,I dont like books .and text symbols I dont read the Bible any more ,,I learn by internal intuitions or spirit my senses hearing seeing feel being human and I will say that being human is something I am departing from as I age You know woody I care about humanity but my greatest joy in life in playing synthesizers I think of my self as seprated from creations I am subject to the laws that balance being alive but so much I have become tired of now at my age 62 I do still enjoy synthesizers they are so full of sound and I learn by sound I learn I live sound is very important to me.
It is a pity that it is so expensive because this is a great jamming tool for the hobbyist also.
yeah, it's up there. don't overlook the more affordable psrs though, the sx600 represents amazing value for money and may fit your needs.
@@WoodyPianoShacksx700 with a small push..
Nice job Woody! Thanks!
Great video and audio. It sounds great on a headset.
well done, i glad you took the trouble to listen properly!
Question: Can you edit or import/upload new FM sounds on Genos 2 or is it a preset machine? Can end users upload new styles and sounds?
presets only, basic attack release, with addition of filter controls. this is not for fm programmers, much better options out ther! but probably perfect for preset flippers like me, haha!
Yeah sure, maybe Yamaha will release expansions.. but it's very much a spoon feed ecosystem, rather than one where you can make patches in Dexed or such to import
The only control you get over the FM engine is 2 or 4 voice unison mode (128 voice polyphony), detune, and pan-spread controls
@@Wagoo for FM sounds, I have no idea. FM sounds are not implemented on Genos 1. But since Genos is not a synth, I doubt Yamaha will implement this facility.
I know this smile - My first impression , when I opened the Window and pluged it into the PA with SubZero 12 400HP😊
With Akai MPC 61 you could also use to create "styles" more like you could sample the parts of the songs and loop whatever parts you needed to loop using the 128 pads (16 pads x 8 of banks)
Yes it would take more time to do this manually, but that is where the fun is? no? For me its not fun going on stage just reproduc... eh .."playing" something Yamaha made. For me I want everything to be handmade by myself. Down to a single note. And I can pat myself on the back "I did this.. I created it all" ))
Do I see myself ever buying Genos2?
How much better is this keyboard than the PSR SX 900? Is it worth double the $$$?
more like triple... but i don't think anyone can answer that question
@@WoodyPianoShack You can, you've played both, and also you're Woody the Piano Man!! LOL 😆
@@WoodyPianoShack I hear the difference between de 900 series and the genos..900 series feels like you playing a keyboard, not the real deal sounds..when you hear the Genos..you don't know if it is a keyboard..sounds sound like it is a real instrument..If it is around 2000 I might consider.
best presentation
Some lovely split level playing. Not a fan of auto accompanying or the string sounds but the brass, nylon guitar & felt piano sound amazing
thanks for that!
Glad for you, hay Woody new today old tomorrow, I have the Genos 1 love it, where is your Video's on your Geno's 1, did you make any videos on the G1?
@@rcca07 no i skipped over G1, so PSR-SX900 direct to G2!
@@WoodyPianoShackdo you think there will be a Psr-sx1000? I cannot afford a Genos2 right now.
Whats the price tag on this particular model with pedal included
Stunning keyboard..so good that it might be perceived as a karoeke track machine... personally I don't like the boat shape profile from the front ..prefer straight lines....
Velvet piano sounded like the high notes had some aliasing or noise sneaking in.
I always say that playing one of those must be like being in heaven!
well i wouldn't go that far, but it's fun for sure! ;)
Great demo!! The first demo song you played, who's the artist and track name?
Worked like a charm.
thats exactly what my thought process is. If im paying $5k for a keyboard i should have the freedom to do what ever i want.@@DagToreLarsen
Please do a video on the Yamaha montage m series
i do have something exciting coming from yammie, but no MM incoming that i know of... i've got my hands pretty full already tbh
I’m gonna be ordering one of these I think
Its hard not to be excited like you with all that at the fingertips. I own Genos one but now the experience gets tripple orgasmic.
that's noe a picture i want to see!
20:24 Play it again with Top Gun 😃
might do that one day, i think that is what you are supposed.
Belle démonstration merci ! ❤️💐
👍 Nice demo. One question. Is there that much reverb on all the patches by default? (Yes I know the level can be changed)
good question, i'm using factory settings, but yes you can tune to your likings. although i don't find it too much or little when playing, feels about right.
15:35 what the name of this song is? Sounds very familiar..
14:36. Miami Vice, Crocketts Theme
Nice Demo Woody! For a performing keyboard player/one man band this instrument would be hard to beat.
I thought it sounded more like a backing for Don Henley Boys of Summer....gr8 machine and playing btw...🎶👌
it was a backing for something completely different, but that track seems to work in many genres... sign of a great tune.
@@WoodyPianoShackit definitely does. Thanks for sharing that gr8 playing 🎹 🎶👌
Sounds delightful
Thank you for the sound. That last one so Synthwave I bet I have heard it thousands of times. Don't know its name though, cannot recall it.
may have been something by the midnight
Excellent demo, Woody! Thank you. What is the style you used for that last song? I really liked it a lot.
this was the "top gun" movie soundtrack style, although It's not called exactly that.
Their team must have a blast making all these styles. I wonder how many people worked on them?
i'd love to know more about the process, song selection etc
Woooooow Wooody it's my favourite SONG !!!!!!!
uhhh, which?
I would have been here for the premiere, but I had a call to make. Looks like a lot of fun to play.
better late than never!
14:37 what is the name of the song please. :)
will there be sounds or styles available for Genos 1?
G2 sounds styles will not work properly on G1
Thanks for the great information! May I please inquire as to which speakers you have mounted to they keyboard? They look perfect. Thank you 🙂
they are the genos accessory speakers from yamaha.
HI... thank youWoody . GOD bless you
Splendid demo.
Wow that looks fun 😀
Incredible showcase! 🙏
Great video as always - Thanks Woody
Was that a Roland keyboard stand I saw it sitting on? (LOL)
shhh, we don't talk about the roland stand.
nice startup visuals
This is on my must have list great video Woody.😊
thanks, appreciated
What’s the song at minute 14.38? I know it but just can’t bring it to mind!
Is it possible to see the notes on screen of the demo backing tracks .. Stevie wonder's track had notes for instance
i don't think so
@@WoodyPianoShack thanks
@@WoodyPianoShack sorry my intention was not to ask a silly question but I found it interesting if the backing tracks have the notes.. excuse my ignorance
