Really interesting video and great to see someone that has got the thing working in a useful way. We have B+G forward sonar integrated in our chart plotter on our Lagoon450 and were expecting to see 80m ahead - not expecting to be able to avoid a submerged container at 9knots or anything, but hoping to be able to creep into shallow anchorages. After trying it out a lot, we now dont bother as the results we were getting were less than expected. Going back to the guys who put it in we were told the sonar only sees a max 4 times the depth ahead, so say we were in 4 metres (we draw 1.3) that gives 16 ahead, less than a boat length given the transducer is about 3m back from the bow. I can see that with deeper depths and vertical bommies the sonar will be useful, especially if the water is a bit murky and thus the big yellow things less visible. But in shallow water ..... Nice vid and the drone stuff awesome.
You are correct in saying in shallow areas, say 4 meters, we would only be able to see out 16 to 30 meters. But, if we were in 4 meters I would be inching forward unless I know it was sand, and flat below me. I find the forward looking sonar an absolute must have!
Thank goodness for drones. They enhance every sailing video. Get the best drone you can and learn to use it to dramatic effect! I can imagine a drone with station keeping, set to hover xx meters ahead of the hull, giving the Captain a view of the grounding hazards the FLR warns about. Thanks for a nice vid, but watch for glare when shooting flat surfaces. The FLR screen was impossible to understand until late in the video when the boat finally came out of the screen area washed out by the glare, and suddenly I saw the relationship between the hazards and the hull. BTW, the screen shot would have been better from closer up. All told this is a valuable showing of a valuable piece of kit. Thanks!
Hi guys, your videos are coming along nicely. I agree about the forward sonar, I think its indispensable and a must when travelling through atolls and unchartered areas. It is something I will be installing when I buy an Amel in the coming months. One suggestion though? Maybe don't give insurance companies any ideas about mandatory equipment, it will be another added cost to an already costly way of life! Many yachts have done well without them, some not so much. I for one will definitely have it, especially as my wife and I will be short handing. I don't have the luxury of a crew to send up in the bosun's chair to look out over yonder for bommies. Hi Dan, Thanks for the comment! Now that I have sailed with, and without a forward looking sonar, I seriously think it should be a requirement. I know some of the captains out here will say "O, you don't need it", or "They don't work", or "I sailed around the world 8 times without one, and I never touched or hit a reef". I have heard a lot of crap, but I try to call balls and strikes as I see them. And I think it an absolute MUST HAVE, if you want to be safe in shallow areas. Best, Ken

Interesting, I’ve only ever read one article about fls and it concluded that it wasn’t worth having as by the time the signal returned and you were alerted to an obstacle you would have already hit it! Even at low speed! Thanks for sharing and safe passage.
Thanks for the comment! There are countries, like Indonesia, that make it mandatory to have AIS onboard. And, since the charts are SO bad in Indonesia, I think FLS should be mandatory as well.
the earlier models were hopeless , good to see they have improved. I put a fine S/S skeg in front of ours to protect it but it was only good for 20 to 30 meters ahead & not that clear , 10 years ago.

I prefer a completely separate system for the FLS. I would not feel safe flying an aircraft with one screen containing all the information. This is why I like the Echopilot, completely separate system. You turn it on in shallow areas, and you feel much safer. And, trust your FLS more than the maps. If the FLS sez 2M, don't go in unless your moving at less than 1 knot on a rising tide. Ken
Great new type sonar I always thought would be safer to have onboard if invented. I am old schooled sailor ..could not see much the screens of your first takes but it's good to know this works and can be installed now. Best buena suerte !

I'd like to see you make a video about how the propeller works..it's really cool how you don't need a reverse gear in your transmission, the prop does it for you. Is there any way you can add a point to the charts showing everyone without fls can see the hidden reefs you've found uncharted? It's so awesome that you back up your fls with a visual from the drone. Is there any way you can build a cage to protect the fls transducer?
We do have a reverse gear in the transmission, just the prop changes shape for the revers gear. Also, it changes shape if we are not using the engine. No way to protect the transducer, if I put something in front of it it would reflect the sound creating noise. You have good question Master!
Hi Ken just have a question about the Echo pilot 2D unit. Can we have the information show on our Garmin chart plotter through Nema 2000 network with split screen viewing like we do with our radar etc. Your Vespar AIS unit I believe you mentioned and I just want to clarify does the Vespars wifi repeat your chart plotter info over wifi and allow you to pick it up on your iPad. Right now we have a Garmin 5212 that is ten years old and the Garmin wifi repeating add on is over $500. If this is true then it would save us having to buy that add on. And, this information can be used on ISailor, or many other sailing Apps. I like our Vesper, and I am fairly happy with the performance. The only problem I have with our Vesper is that sometimes the Vesper hangs up, something to do with the software. This is rare, but has happened over 6 times over the past few years. Sailing Aquarius Around The World we looked at the hand held vesper unit at the Annapolis boat show this year and was impressed by it being remote like a phone and all the things it can do! It’s still pretty pricey since this part is new to the scene but we like the idea of being portable! The USA dollar is killing us Canadians lol. We have a very old vhf down below and a standard horizon handheld portable unit we keep in the cockpit. We will need AIS before we head out cruising so this is on our list of must haves. Will see if they are at the Toronto boat show in January. Hope you are enjoying a nice warm day as it’s cold here in Ontario. At least whatever snow we had melted on our sunny above freezing winter
I am in Vegas at the moment hanging out with mom. So, it is kind of warm right now, but not as warm as Batam Indonesia where we left Aquarius. Batam is 20 miles South of Singapore. Hello Chris, The final resting place of Tanda Malaika is shown at 6:20 in our Huahine video ruclips.net/video/J_kU7l_4yL4/видео.html. The unfortunate end for Tanda Malaika was the culmination of several mistakes, not just one, and would not have been averted by an additional piece of hardware. The simple fact is Tanda Malaika last course took them straight over a well marked reef. If Tanda Malaika had a radar on they would have seen the reef, take a look at 20:47 on ruclips.net/video/qR2uozmTBmM/видео.html, this shows Aquarius coming up to Beveridge Reef. You can see the reef with radar at least 5 miles out, but you can only see the reef with FLS 80 to 100 meters out. ----OPINION---- Being that no one should be sailing at night, 80 meters from the windward side of a reef, the forward looking sonar should not have been considered a useful piece of equipment at the time of impact. Aquarius sailed by this area three times, and every time we were at least 5 miles from the reef. The FLS is used when you think there might be something there, and you are watching EVERYTHING you got to try to stay away from shallow waters. FLS will not help you if you believe you're in 1500 meters of open ocean. Safe Sailing, and fair winds!

They make a 3D version, but it's much more expensive. I think the 2D version is good enough for me. Sometimes I'll turn from side to side, and do a loop when looking for a good place to drop the anchor.

They currently make the Luma-Vu Camera, but it looks down not out. I asked them to design a forward looking model for me. Maybe if more people show interest it will actually get done. I think there would be a big market for it.
Hi Paul, I just looked at the website for AquaLuma, and saw they are big in Marine Lighting. Maybe you can help me... I am looking to remove the forward steaming light, and the bow deck light from the mast, and place these lights on the lower spreaders. The AquaLuma Spreader Light 12 looks like a good option. If I put two on each lower spreader, one forward facing (Steaming Light) one down facing (Deck light). This would be a total of 4 spreader lights on the main mast. I may do the same on the mizzen as well with two downward facing lights for the aft deck lights. Please let me know your thoughts. And, where can I buy these lights in Thailand, and the USA? I don't turn the Echo Pilot on in water more than 50 meters. Therefore it was not in operation when we were 10 miles off the coast of Columbia where we hit the log.
@@Nunyabizn3ss It is doubtful that you would react to a log floating on the top of the water. Echo Pilot gives us alarms for fish and other items all the time, and we don't react to every alarm. The Echo Pilot is great for shallow conditions during an entrance to an Atoll, or finding a good place to drop the hook. But, it's not good for seeing some floating object in open ocean, unless you're expecting something could happen.
I have not noticed the power usage when using the Echo Pilot, because it's less than 1 amp at 12V. This would imply less than 0.5A at 24V. According to Echo Pilot's website the unit is available in 12V and 24V models.
Forward looking sonar is Perfect , if you navigate around shallows and reefs But your comment about insurance and forward looking sonar and circumnavigation is complete lunatic !
They are a bit more than USD$1K. Probably more like USD$1.6K for the unit, and not sure about the installation, but you will have to put a hole in the boat.

how good do you believe this sonar is at detecting floating containers in the open ocean?
We use sonar in shallow Anchorages and passages. I guess you have to spot that container in the middle of the ocean yourself 😁

Yes, and I have mine set to 5 meters. That is the beeping sound you hear when we were leaving the anchorage North of Lombok.

I have forward looking sonar, but I'm also working with the AquaLuma company to design a forward looking HD camera also for and even better look.
I'll have to look into AquaLuma.

I’m guessing it won’t see floating logs, as you hit one in Columbia? Could it have been user error, or was it not functioning at the time?

I have not noticed the power usage when using the Echo Pilot, because it's less than 1 amp at 12V. This would imply less than 0.5A at 24V. According to Echo Pilot's website the unit is available in 12V and 24V models.
