They did that for the 75th anniversary of the Dambusters and I was in the kinema in the woods at Woodhall Spa where the Dambusters were based after the dams raid
When they showed this in the cinema's for the 50th anniversary I booked tickets for myself and the rest of the family to see the screening of the film. At the time this was released in 1969 my mother was only 5 and my dad was just 2 so this was their first chance of seeing it on the big screen, everyone shouted your only supposed to blow the bloody doors off too.
Apparently, when the studio heads saw the rushes of this they absolutely freaked. If any one of those drivers had been an inch out going up the ramp, the guy standing at the back of the bus waving them on would have been flattened. Watch it again - the last car up doesn't miss him by much, does it? Which just increases your admiration for the stunt work, really.
Peter Collinson - he did it himself as Paramount and some others had concerns about a stuntman doing this, so the director did it himself. Got to admire it.
Literally everyone over the age of 15 has seen this at some point in their lives, the point of something being a 'classic' is that everyone's seen it regardless of it's age. Trust me it'll be a lot of years before this film becomes obscure.
I got stuck on the prison level for so long, I didn't know what to do to pick the guy up! Back then you couldn't just hop on RUclips for a guide. I bought magazines and everything trying to find the answer, then one day I found one guide that explained it (on the whole internet!) At that moment I ran upstairs and drove straight through those doors blasting the horn, I was so frickin' happy!
@@sunsetvlogs5500 they filmed michael caine leaving wormwood scrubs, but the actual interior of the prison is kilmainham prison in dublin, interestingly, the reason they had to film in dublin was because Noel Coward (mr Bridger) was a tax exile and thus couldn't film in the uk.
always made me laugh this scene like 10x more effort than needed there is literally no traffic and no one around they could of just stopped the bloody bus and drove on it would of been quicker.
Wouldn’t be realistic. When you just swiped a few million in Bullion, under the noses of unregulated lunatics, you’re, to be honest, dumb levels of brave, to stop *at all,* until you’re as safe as you can get. Well, minus ‘blending in with traffic’, but you get the idea.
Would happily stand corrected on this, but I believe the bus was the only Italian Job vehicle to survive filming. It was refitted with its seats and survived in the Scottish Highlands until the mid 90s.
Don't know if anyone knows but if you listened to Talk Sport radio many years ago a presenter on there call Mike Dickin always used to say he was a stunt driver in one of the minis who did this scene and the sewer tunnels. Sadly he died about ten years ago.
@@paultaylor781 yes they did, but with stunt drivers, the inside bits of the cars with the actors was done againsts a green screen and if you watch carefully the white lines change.

Yes, this is what happened after The Italian Job, Charlie and his crew lost the gold forever, somehow managed to escape, hitched a ride to the nearest town and disbanded. Knowing the Italian mafia would be after him for revenge, he fled to the US, adopted a new name "Alfred", worked in the CIA and became Bruce Wayne's butler. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

from the way the wheels on that blue mini stop rolling the moment they hit the ramp I'd wager a guess and say it was being pushed by another vehicle that was out of frame and simply rolling in neutral
It hurts my brain the more i think about it. if the mini is traveling at say 30mph, why doesn't it jolt straight forward into the bus when it touches the ramp? because the ramp is stationery in relation to the mini's wheels. arh
+MrWolfSnack well it was 48 years ago so not a huge change, I think the idea of the film is they used typical over the top extreme opposite ends of the londoner's accent
The minis where as mutch characters as the cast.
Totally.
The red Mini's license plate says HMP, ironic because Charlie Croker, who rode in the red Mini, did time at HMP Wormwood Scrubs.
Are You lot idiots?
100% Fiat offered the producers as many cars as they wanted if they used them for the heist. But they held firm and used British minis
I beg for its 50th anniversary which is next year in 2019, that the 1969 version comes back to the cinema for a week, cause I’ll be 100% watching it
