You are absolutely right about bumping your head on storage over the cab

I think one needs to do it a couple of times to understand why it is important Mark!

the problem of the Grand Canyon is its defective insulation both for the walls and for the floor. Thanks for your video.

It has no isolation at all. The doors and motor compartment especially. And that for the price..!

There’s a video of someone rectifying this problem. Very cheeky Hymer.

@@apple6169850 I was not aware of this problem and it being a Hymer, I did not even check - I just assumed. There are videos of me (yet to be published) demonostrating why some vans are cheap by not having insulation in these places.

We have the non 4x4 version. Previous van was a Westfalia Columbus which in our opinion was a much better built conversion. The comments about the poor / nonexistent insulation is absolutely correct, coldest van we’ve ever had. Had many reliability problems with the ‘Hymer’ part, especially the toilet (failed 3 times in last 12 months) and flyscreen on the main door. The tent ladder is a pain in that when it’s been used you can’t access the main seat at the table. The Mercedes Sprinter is lovely to drive and has been problem free. Next van will be another Westfalia whether a Columbus or Sven Hedin but not a Hymer van…sadly.

Why have the comments about the poor insulation been removed? have they rectified it? one of those mentioning it put a link to a youtube vid showing a company rectifying the issue and it did seem very poor when they started, however, it wasn't the exact same van, it was a Hymer 4x4 and very similar also it was posted in 2020.

Nice. However in the shower where the two drains are, it's not very well placed. Most times when water drains, it is always near the corners. Then why would you put the drains about 10cm's away from the corners, not very smart on the manufacturers part.

It is very nice but I don't see 4 x 4 as very important for me and usually I prefer motorhomes to campervans, so, it isn't for me. I wonder how the price compares with something like the Bimobil HR 380? Of the two I would prefer the Bimobil. I couldn't afford either I'm sure.

Honestly it's really pathetic from Hymer. They KNOW that half (if not more) of their customers would never assume their vans are not insulated. Yet they go on and don't put in ANY insulation AT ALL. I have a GCS 4x4 and can confirm, there really is ZERO insulation. It can be fixed, and I'll add insulation myself, but if you're paying 120k+ for a camper you'd expect at least a minimum of insulation there. A lot of other details in the interior feel very flimsy and cheap: plastic hinges of cupboards that break easily, the electrical system is a mess, the bathroom sink drain was disconnected ex factory (!) so when you used the sink in the bathroom water would run into the leisure batteries... It's a real shame from Hymer and it's about time more people know about all these issues before they buy one.

Greg, I am a clearing house for complaints so thanks for pointing this out so that I can pass the information onto others. It never occured to me - and I have a bit of experience with vans - that a Hymer Grand Canyon would not have insulation right the way round.

One hundred and thirty thousand Euros? I know the German economy is about to tank big-time because of the fuel crisis, but Hymer are having a laugh. At 80,000 Euros it would be over-priced......

    • @VanlifewithAlan
      @VanlifewithAlan  2 года назад +1

The parts alone would cost more than that Fred - the biggest part being the Mercedes Sprinter.

Quite an outdated and ugly design in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love the 4x4 vans and their rugged looks, but interior and exterior of this van don't do it for me.
They should wrap it with a modern design, use some Black Rhino rims and make the interior a little more "stealthy", with bags and modern materials, then it would be a looker in my opinion.

    • @VanlifewithAlan

Design is not my strong point. I thought it looked tasty but I bow down to the opinion of others who are more artistic than me!

Its a poor quality camper for the price by the look of things. On a dodgy chassis and running gear.
