Castle Valkenburg

"Kasteel Valkenburg" is a castle ruin in the South Limburg fortified town of Valkenburg. The high-altitude castle, which is rare for the Netherlands, is located on the Heunsberg, an offshoot of the Margraten plateau. The castle, once the stronghold of the lords of Valkenburg, was destroyed in 1672 but never completely demolished. Below the castle are several escape corridors and the Castle Quarry. The Valkenburg castle ruins are an important tourist attraction and have been a protected national monument since 1967.
