    Most people don't understand that this system is offered in addition to the normal Level 2 system, which Mercedes of course also offers, without the strict limitations. These strict limitations are necessary because it must be guaranteed that malfunctions are statistically almost impossible. It just shows how difficult it is to make a system so reliable that one is also prepared to accept liability for it. This also includes covering scenarios that are extremely rare, e.g. a chain of errors with sensor failure, etc.
    All it takes is one scenario where the manufacturer cannot guarantee that the system will respond correctly to drop down to Level 2. The system would also probably work in rain and at night or at higher speeds, most of the time, just like their Level 2 system, but 99.9% is just not enough if you are responsible, it has to be 99.9999%.
    All the comparisons with other manufacturers, whose systems can supposedly do everything, are simply wrong, because they can't guarantee anything, not even at low speeds. And this subtle difference is actually quite a big one.

    • @Zripas
      @Zripas Год назад +3

      Bu then, what's the point in using this joke system over basic adaptive cruise control? If it can disengage at any moment if one of those 50 requirements are not met, then you still have to be ready to take over at any moment. So what's the point?

    • @lubder
      @lubder Год назад +9

      @@Zripas No the system can't disengage at any moment, that's the point and difference compared to other systems, which in the worst case, do not even recognize that there is a problem or just shut down immediately, whether you are ready or not.
      As long as the L3 system is active, you can read a book or watch a video. Then Mercedes is liable and responsible, not you. If the conditions are no longer met, then the driver has at least 10sec to take over, the system doesn't just shut down.
      Mercedes must guarantee that every situation, no matter how unlikely, is reliably detected. Imagine someone suddenly standing in front of the car in a traffic jam, for whatever reason. Now it may be that a level 2 system reliably detects and brakes thousands of times, but the one time the sun is blinding or a sensor is disturbed and the system would simply run over him. Just one example of countless that are conceivable and must be taken into account. The level 3 system must guarantee that this is practically impossible, for which it has various sensors and redundancies. If it happens anyway, it's Mercedes' fault, if you blindly rely on a level 2 system and run someone over, it's your fault and responsibility.

    • @Zripas

      It can disengage... it will warn you few seconds before, you you will have to take over because it will disengage. Just like Tesla FSD does, just like any autonomous feature, it will warn you about iminent disangament and you have to take over as soon as possible. Difference with something like Tesla system is that it will actually try to pull over to the side of the read if you fail to engage with that system, while this mercedes joke system will simply stop you in the middle of the road...
      I can only imagine how this joke system would attempt to handle accident or any unusual situation... Tho it does only work under 40m/h, on highway, during day time, no rain or snow or falling leaves, not in a tunnel, with car in front... At this point Mercedes will come out with 1m/h Level 5 autonomous car and call a day... it's a joke system... They just wanted that "We did it first" badge they could claim to have... Nothing more.
      "The level 3 system must guarantee that this is practically impossible"
      But its not... There are no such requirements for any system to be labeled as level 3... You only need autonomous car, aka car which can control steering, acceleration, braking, lane keeping, avoid collisions in front. Basically that's it... Same thing as any adaptive cruise control does, difference is that in this case you have car manufacturer who takes liability for any damages if something goes wrong, this is why it has like 50 different limitations put on it... Because its a bad system and no one should trust it, because manufacturer doesn't trust it...
      Mercedes joke system is just that, a joke, call it level 5 if you wish, it's still a joke.

    One frustrating aspect of these systems is the delay in response during "stop and go" situations, like in traffic. When the car ahead moves, the autopilot in your vehicle often has a noticeable delay before it starts moving. @@benjaminkohl342 Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) functions well at high speeds and can handle almost all traffic situations. Operating lower than 40 miles per hour is approximately 64km/h in good weather conditions and following a car in the same lane is no issue for the FSD system. The only reason drivers are legally required to be ready to take over within one second and to remain attentive at all times is due to regulatory constraints. Tesla has not chosen to invest the time to apply for their system to be categorized as Level 3 autonomous driving. While Tesla's customers may not be interested in a system that only functions in limited situations, I also get nervous when a Mercedes is tailgating me and not honking even when I'm driving under 40 miles per hour.

FSD also routinely ignores speed bumps, and cannot see potholes or *broken* *glass* in the road. what a joke

      Tesla is leve 2, and is full of investigation for problems and accidents and is not able to be used without a continuis control of human, and is not programmed for easy and an expected event (like a truck with traffic lights on top) that brings the car compeltely in tilt. So that is not autopilot, not a real one. Then you can push the limits of the technology but in this way you are risking you life and the one of everyone else. Plus the problem are the words of the boss that says tha the autopilot is already there, but is not, at least not in proportion with his words

Just cause you squeeze in 10 secs where you can actually watch youtube cause you're in traffic, driving below 40mph, its sunny, and its during the day grants you a lvl3 title, I'm sorry, I'll stick with FSD that drives highway and city streets, anytime of the day, most weather conditions, much higher speeds albeit with the frequent nags.
    To think i get all that limitation mercedes offers for just $2500 annually..... thanks, but no thanks.

    In this sense, the basic 2-level automatic control works better. One standard trip I have is approx. 500 kilometers. At level 2, the car steers, adjusts the speed and keeps the distance constant for more than 90% of the driving distance. There is so little other traffic in many places in Finland that Mercedes' level 3 system would actually be a deterioration of the current situation.

      @@845amg I am pretty sure it still has all the levl 2.5 Stuff on board that lets you cruise around how you describe it.
      Just if you want to activate level 3 you need to be in the conditions he describes. The car us still able to drive with level 2/2.5 if you prefer that.
      The difference here is that level 2.5 needs you to be aware of your surroundings all the time and f you crash it is your fault.
      In level 3 mode you do not need to be aware and if the car crashes Mercedes will pay the bill.
