Wonderful narration. Your introduction had me intrigued. I started listening last night at around 2am as I could not sleep. I managed 6 chapters, so although I had no sleep, I did have the most entertaining night of insomnia ever. ☺️

What does mean Flit in this sentence: “…with kerosene lamps flaring and spluttering amidst a smell of rancid mutton fat and paraffin and Flit …” ?

The work you’ve gone though to craft a lovely voice and speech pattern is lovely and I would think indeed hope, rewarding. I congratulate you.
One remark given with admiration for your talents - why would you toss in the word shit” in your introduction? To encourage me to listen? No. To tell me you’re just normal, average and akin to me? No.
It really didn’t match or garner respect or enthusiasm for your work. It was a jarring false. Intelligent people never lack a vocabulary that shows respect for its audience.

Hi. Thanks for giving it a listen.
No specific reason really as to why the word 'shit'was used in my introduction. I had to go back and listen to it again to see what you were saying. I suppose it's a colloquial term used frequently in informal, normal, everyday conversation. Like, "o shit I forgot to switch off the heater!"
I do understand if you are someone who doesn't like it though.

@@TandiTopCat it just doesn’t match the introduction or the literature being discussed. I have used the word shit but usually it’s when I do something - like when I drop a hammer on my toe. Hah. Science has said, people who cuss when in pain, the pain dissipates more quickly. Other than that it is rather a give away for a lack of a considered thought or vocabulary.
From your voice, you are multi language, beautifully modulated, and have worked so hard on your blooming skills. Meant no harm here. BTW, I’m experimenting with yelling out a short prayer when I cause myself pain. Humn, that works just as well.😂🤣.
I have to be fair in saying, fair being my confession, when I first heard your words I almost clicked off. I couldn’t imagine listening to something so British spoken with a foreign accent. Then I thought, unfair, so I listened. Lovely. Apologies.

@@Donna-cc1kt @Donna Hi Donna, no need for apology please, because I understand what you are trying to say and more importantly, where you were coming from - a positive place, so honestly I didn't mind your comment at all. You expressed your opinion well and respectfully, so it's fine! I do agree that using coarse words is not necessary and sometimes it is associated with a lack of thought or vocabulary etc and it is indeed a pure delight when one can be eloquent without resorting to cheap/cuss words, but I do not think that should apply to all circumstances, there are plenty of intelligent people who curse all the time or extremely horrible people who talk excellently. So I am not bothered as much by such words, ofc depending on the context in which they were used and coming to the context, I do get your point on how with regard to this story, setting etc you found it jarring. That's alright.
I also don't mind people not wanting to listen to something due to accents too, because it can be jarring to the ear, especially for things like audiobooks, where people want to relax and enjoy the audio, not spend time getting used to foreign accents. We do have this naturally built in preferences due to nature and nurture. So, to each his own. What I have noticed though is that, for people like me who have grown up in a multi-lingual atmosphere, consuming media from multiple countries since a young age, it's not that much of a problem getting used to to varied accents. But as I said, specially for things like audiobooks, all of us will have strong preferences for the voice- male or female, american/British/other accents, the tone or pitch of the voice, also depends on the type of story, just like how we have preferences for say actors or singers etc. There was an earlier comment on this particular story by a woman who wanted a classic british accent and I directed her to a BBC audio production of this story. So for you to have that initial thought is completely natural but what is even better than natural is you continued to give it a chance ! So thank you for that. 🤗
Also, thank you for this conversation.
